Security Door Locks (aftermarket Door Locks)

After my car had it's attempted theft, before I came out and crashed their party, I'm now doing as much as I can to stop any intruders getting into the car.

I expected that they came in through somehow unlocking my door the conventional way. So I decided to go for those Security Door Locks. After hours of trying to install them, I had no luck. The hole for the door lock to go in is too small, so I had to grind the lugs off one lock. It then went straight in.... nice... but the problem was I couldnt secure the lock in place. The clamp provided was useless because the back of the handle has so much plastic sticking everywhere, I couldnt get it to clip it. I tried it all, but no luck. The stock door lock has an extra mounting area which slides over the handle bolt, so when you screw the handle back into the door, it holds the lock as well.

So I guess my question is, has anyone installed these locks onto their car? If not, what's another good idea to stop theifs entering? Remote locking only, with no door locks? But there are cons with that also.

Alarm and 3 + point immobilisor is coming soon too. The one that came with the car was incomplete. I'm going to forget about Remote start, as I hear that can be an easy way to crack. I will definately install a "screecher". Sounds like an ingenious idea! Also looking at one of those dettering alarms, when the car will beep or speak when someone is in close range of it.

I dont think changing the locks will help. Most thefts i hear about, are caused by smashing a window.

What about installing a GSM/GPS Pager - can be wired so if your alarm is triggered, you get an SMS.

I'd hide an internal screamer in the cabin, so if someone breaks in they will get deafened trying to steal any belongings and wont be able to spend long in the cabin.

I had someone try to break into my Calais twice, both times the shock sensor triggered and set the alarm off, and this detered them enough to walk away with minor damage to the lock/handle. I'd set the shock sensor on your new alarm to be as sensitive as practically possible.

If they want to get in, they wont 'pick the lock'.

The only thing Something like Solex security locks protect against is either someone picking the lock, or someone happens to have a similar working key.

As mentioned, a paging alarm or GSM alarm system is the best option, but dont set it too sensitive, as it will always be going off, also think about Microwave sensor inside the car, usually used only convertables, it will sense movement inside the cabin, such as glass breaking, or an arm reaching into the car.

Also look into glass break sensors, tilt sensors, and voltage tamper sensor.

Sadly, every car I have had in my current location (except my Skyline GTR) has been attempted to be broken into, the list and hows:

Mazda 626: Quite exotic, they used a foot-long drill, drilled up from under the engine bay trough the battery and left it go. I came out the next morning and the battery was dead flat, there was scratches and marks on the drivers door, but thankfully no entry. Cost me a battery, and I also had a steel plate cut to size and placed under the battery to protect the new battery from the same fate.

Nissan 180sx: This was quite sad, they first went for the good old Slim Jim method, failed, went to dig the lock out of the door causing massive amounts of damage, stuffing the door skin completely, and still not succeeding, so they went and jammed a screwdriver into the window, pry'd the window open, reached in and popped the lock. They got into the car, stole the 2 day old Sony headunit, popped the boot, stole my laptop, tried to use the wheel brace and steal the wheels, but the socket set to get the nuts off wasn't in the car.

Toyota Soarer: This was the most effortless, they put a brick through the window, reached in and stole my GPS (my fault, I left it in the car).

Ways to avoid break-ins, dont leave the face on the stereo, dont have a flashy you-beat sound system or stickers advertising possible sound system or expensive electronics, have tinted windows (cant see stuff, dont want it), have a car alarm with security light, have alarm sticker on each front door to advertise alarm, dont park in dark quiet areas or train stations, try to park near the entrance at shopping centres, always lock the steering lock (wont help break ins, but make it hard to tow/move/steal).

forget the door locks mate. people will just smash the window and either reach in, or climb in if they want to drive.

buy a proper alarm and immobiliser.

When I first got my car, my mate said "you know, prying the window open is an easy way to get into the car, they have no frame around the window like your old Ford!" How right he was.

The alarm is the way to go then for a little bit of peice of mind, I'm not going to go for fancy wank modules like remote start and transform into a decepticon or something, but all the sensors, screamers, are the way to go. End of the day, people can do damage no matter what you have in there. What we need is a reflecting sonic beam around the car haha. But I guess anyone can drive past and throw a brick or something as the person above stated.

I'm in the process of talking to a mates dad who fits them professionally. Just a bugger that I have to work during trade hours, which sucks!
