hey guys, ive had a set of toyo proxes ra1 225/50/zr16 for years, they have got very little to no tread left on them, the guy i got them from said that they were still excellent to use at this stage of there life. I never got to use them and now im selling my car, so looking to get rid of them. my question to u guys is was this guy full of it? and r they worth anything to sell? if so what?

cheers for the help.

The fact that they are old, well worn meaning plenty of heat cycles and not really a true semi slick to start with...well i woudl say sell them with the car. The cost of swapping over tyres would erode any premium they are worth over normal tyres

there not on the car or on any rims. just sitting in my shed taking up room.

Roy, why do you say they're not a 'real' semi slick?

For years they were the gun tyre for hillclimbs based on their cold performance, and at or near full depth you won't find a better wet semi slick. For dry use only Toyo recommended they be buffed before use IIRC. That would certainly improve their feel underneath you.

old semi slicks though aren't worth much - a few years and they're well past their best regardless of the amount of use they've had. Manufacturers throw them out if they exceed their 5yr shelf life. I bought a few semi slicks that found their way over here via an importer that had exceeded their shelf life. They were throwing them out for $50ea brand new, and that's about all they were worth...

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
