hi

im in ireland and thought you guys might be able to help with some knowledge.

i purchased 2 new hks gt-ss turbos on nengun for my friends rb26 engined hcr32. he has done 2 drift events so far....

yesterday he lost all boost and came into the pits. i could hear a rough bearing noise coming from the front turbo. ... no smoke.

anyway we had a look and the shaft has serious up and down play and sounds very rough when spun by hand even. bearing is gone id say...

just wondering if any of you have had faulty hks/garrett turbos. im thinking the turbo got starved of oil somehow.... but maybe its a faulty turbo.

any feedback is great. car is running 430hp @flywheel on 1bar. rev limit is 8000.

thanks

Yeh I'm interested to see what caused it too. I'll be investing in a set of turbos in the near future which will be around the GT-SS or GT-RS / N1 size. I'll most likely be going with a set of Garretts (GT2560's or GT2860's depending on their badging)

These units would easily run a bar without problem? The boost level he was running definitely wouldn't have caused it???

The other day I was reading about oil restrictors on here....but you would've had that all sorted as you've no doubt had the turbos on their for a while?

for it to go that quick, i would say it was an oil/water starvation problem, or a serious overboost.

all you can do is take them off and have a look. hks or your supplier may look after you with a warranty if you can rule out the above

There is a huge difference between those two turbo's...SS is for Street and GT-RS should only be used in drag or race.

As for your friends blown turbo's.

Likely causes.....as stated already

Oil/Water starvation.

Oil blockage in line.

I suspect though a few things could have gone wrong with the install.

To have only used them hard twice and they are rat shit leads me to believe the following causes also.

Turbo's may have been knocked with a hammer to re-align with the manifold and then again to fit the dumps...it is tight and may have been belted in.

Was it an engine out job?

Boost controller fault.

When your drifting you don't get to see the boost gauges...and they may not be correct if factory OEM.

What Boost controller are you using?

How was it set up?

Good luck with the warranty claim.

thanks lads,

my friend took off his turbo today and the banjo (orifice) bolt (hks part no. 1408-ra020) on the turbo is blocked. he says the hole in the banjos are tiny compared to the OEM oil feed banjo holes.

the car is a drift car and that day it peaked at 1.2bar. he has a profec b spec II. the solenoid is weak in it i think as it spikes quite high momentarily. my own profec b doesnt do this.

anyway i assume a tiny bit of dirt clogged the tiny hole.

thinking of rebuilding the turbo with oem sized turbo oil feed banjo's

can't do that mate, the restrictor is there to prevent too much oil getting to the core. You are probably better off looking into why there was something floating around the motor large enough to block an oil feed....was it bearing? ring? piston? plain old oil gunk?

    • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
    • Hi. Sry iam not a mechanic and iam not at the car atm so i dont know 100% but they told they measure those and even try to change those. AFM they have two. Coils are new a they have my old one too. Plugs too. ECU...we have 25 NEO stock and Nistune 25 NEO.   But i dont know if any one those could be the problem and why/if/what can cause this, Only thing they did not check is fuel...but that walbro 255 is new(like 1,5 years)... That fuel pressure gauge idk...but i let them know Any suggestions?   EDIT: how can they know if it is like you say he ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high? Tha car has boost controler
    • Can you clarify what you mean by boost cut, do you mean it misfires both when under load (driving) and when stationary and out of gear? Or does the ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high (boost control issue)? Does it occur at idle with no throttle? When you say "the ECU is OK", what ECU is it and why do you think it is OK? Have you used the NEO ECU, and if so do you have a MAP sensor attached? Same for the AFM, why do you think it is OK? Do you have any way to put a fuel pressure gauge on it (even just a mechanical one between the fuel filter and fuel rail)?
