hi guys, after months of looking i found my dream car.

a 1996 sII gtst, and im in love with it.

it has coilover suspension and a great exhaust system.... but im not sure what to do next??

i have a just jap front mount intercooler, a 3a pod filter, and turbo timer on the way.

but i am worried that these new mods will just cause turbo lag with minimal horsepower gains???

because i have already bought them its a little to late but i was just wondering if i have made a bad investment??

any advise either way would be great

Well

1. Turbo time, not a performance mod

2. Pod, wont increase performance either, if anything decrease it

3. Adding a I/C without a tune, potentially wont affect anything, maybe a tad less response.

End of the day, most mods are useless without getting a full tune/ECU, or a interceptor like a S-AFC etc.

Hey, great choice.. next thing you need to do is HEAPS of research!!! spend hours/days/weeks browsing and searching this forum.. Almost everything you need to know is here.

From what I have read the JJ FMIC will give you minimal lag but should increase power output, so that's up to you. Pod, you can't go wrong, no lag only quicker better response and better breathing for ur engine. Timer is optional. A boost controller is very handy..

I rekon for now stick with that and study up! Bigger turbo might be on the cards soon

well that was 2 very different responses.......

next step was a electronic boost controller and spitfire coil pack

then a good tune...........

im not after massive horsepower just a quick safe daily drive that wont be breaking down every second week and need alot of money spent on it.

and another question as well, my car is a 1996 sII r33 gtst, is awesome condition with 88,000 on the clock. i paid 10,000 for it, is that crazy cheap???

cause i can find anyting close to that price anywhere

You dont need coil packs if your stock ones are in good working order.

Also, before a turbo, you'll need clutch, injectors, AFM (maybe), ECU and so on (basically 5k or so worth)

So dont even think/worry about a turbo for now

A pod wont increase performance, i can tell you that right now. My Air Temp sensor shows 55 degree's in traffic for intake temp.

Without traffic/on freeway it drops back to 30-35, so that is a difference and bonus to keeping the stock airbox

that does seem very cheap to me, but the prices are crashing.....

when I took the stock box off and put a pod on mine it was definately noticable!! i still run the CAI tho, i don't know if it helps but it can't hurt.

and yeah, with the turbo comes a whole lot of stuff.

i think when u have and a controller should see you with 190-200kw.

Nismoid, as far as a tune goes, can you tune the stock ecu? have been told yes and also that you can only reset it., which is correct?

Does a Pod filter really decrease performance? I always thought that it improved performance.A

After i put in my apexi pod filter + hks exhaust i could definately feel a large power increase. It could have just been the ehaust, but yeh.

A good high-flowing panel filter is better than a pod for a street car.

Most people use highly restrictive/stock panel filters and then change to a pod and notice a difference... of course you'll notice a difference as you never had a decent panel filter to begin with

do what u want man ur car.... start off with the slow mods FMIC and shit like you already said, bigger turbo etc just wait for that and save because if you go for bigger turbo u will need to get engine work too internals like pistons get forgies etc injectors fuel pump with mine all im currently doing is installing hybrid FMIC and thats it , got that on with a dose pipe and forged pistons but need a tune as when i go over 4 1/5 revs engine starts pinging but ye keep it stock for now save and when you wanna cut sick with the mods do it all at same time

you can reset it which is a fairly simple procedure anyone can do but tuning is done by way of a remap. as far as i know only Toshi in NSW and Dr Drift in Vic can do real time tuning of the stock ecu

Pretty much do what i've done and you get 190-200kw@wheels , REAL figures, not HAPPY dyno figures.

Plus i havent really spent that much money either, it turns, goes and stops.

Anymore than this you lookin at bigger turbo, bigger injecotrs, full aftermarket ecu's, etc etc etc ... What i've done to my car is pretty much the limit before spending a fortune. But im quite happy with it as a daily, its plenty quik for the street.

Thanks Basti, Over time does the ECU lose anything? i guess, does it NEED to be reset every so often?

I have Pod, Zaust, man Boost Control (running up to 11psi at most) All this should be fine after a reset yeah??

i read in here somewhere that it resets itself after 50 starts or so. so no biggie. serach on ecu reset if u wanna know more. its not so much of a tune as a reboot. still factory maps and stuff

is it like a new ecu?

like a power fc?

does it really help, and is it worth the money?

and how easy are they to install and tune????

a SAFC2 is what is known as a piggyback ecu, it modifies the signals the motor gives the stock ecu so the stock ecu will add more or less fuel, it can be very usefull if fuel is the only thing you need to fine tune.

SAFC as he sed, fiddles with the airflow signal so the ecu give more or less fuel. Only down side is SAFC can not tune ignition, so its only can do so much. That sed it can be useful for R33's, gettin rid of that nasty Rich and retard it does wen the ecu senses too much flow.

Gained a good 30rwkw from the SAFC tune, and lots all over the rev range. A worth while and cheap mod for those that dont have the coin to go full ecu and have just basic bolt on's and mild boost. 190-200rwkw for street is still quite fun. Anymore than this than get ready to open that bank cheque. !!!

It think the most important thing when modifiying is known what you want to acheive in your first step.

Stock skyline: ?response, ?power, ?handling, ?drift, ?drag, ?streeter

tune the car for to your desire. There will many phases to your tuning and many costs.....how much do u want to spend after buying the car, when will u spend it, and how much money and power is enough?

a r33 with coils, and exhaust and soon to be Timer, intercooler and pod will be ok (all your current mods don't really improve power that much - i/c, pod, exhaust... a SAFC, new ecu (haltech or PFC) it than important to support your motor for more power. Fuel pump so u don't lean out, new ecu (good tune), new turbo (internal gate/external gate), boost controller.

i would personally, add a little boost with a turbo tech boost T ($50), SAFC (piggyback) ($200-300) and maybe a fuel pump ($199) and/or fuel pressure reg ($150) for the support. that would be fun and safe in terms or air fuel ratio install yourself...... and push maybe 12 psi and kick it sideways... BTW, please beware of the new antihooing laws in your state as they can impound your car and eventually sell it if u repeat your offence

    • Out of curiosity, how do you cover up the inspection hole? Surely it doesn't sit open like that, right? With grime and dirt coming in and oil going out?
    • Hi from Canada, Both of my calipers are starting to fail. My car is a 2005 M35 Stagea ARX and I can't seem to find any parts or any cross reference caliper that would fit my car. Is there a company or a similar caliper that would fit and I could replace the OEM one. Or if anyone knows where I can find a new OEM. Any help is very appreciated. Let me know!
    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that 
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything
