yo,

broke my Jim Berrry 'full monty' 1000hp? 4000lb+ piece of crap after 5000ks waste of money clutch.

It is still in the car and definatly looks like pressure plate failure from what I can tell,

my car is agressivly driven on the street, I dont launch at every light tho and the current clutch only had to endure 2 launches, the 3rd relitivly easy launch killed it.

it never realy hooked up properly and made unpleasent sounds after run in period.

I am looking at a coppermix twin as a replacemnt but would like to know of alternatives and availability.

can anyone reccomend any options? and where can I get somthing quickly?

spoke to Jim today, he was very concerned that my clutch had failed and wants it sent back for inspection which will hapen as soon as I can get it out.

my expierience with the clutch hasnt been a good one, I'll be kicking myself if I get another dud hence I am thinking an alternative.

these clutches have a stock pressure plate resprung to massive clamp pressures, to be fair to Jim, when I inspected the unit prior to install it was of a very high quality so I doubt if it was workmanship, just maybe its pushhing modded stock gear a bit far.

labor, time and the fact I am on a rental car is the cost/downtime I want to avoid.

My tuner is busy for a week so I may get Nissan to pull it out and hold the car until a verdict on the failure is made. I spose I should wait until then, if I do take it to nissan then a Nismo clutch might be a possibility. If nissan wont fit it (or want $5000 and 6weeks to do it) I can have a replacement done elsewhere.

I have searched and the posters with coppermix clutches seem very happy, with opinions on other hipo clutches varying radically.

looking for favorable reports on the units available without special order or shipment from Japan.

and finally, maaan. the cheapie rental is the pits.. oh guys I tell you its just sheer terror.. 199? holden nova with no powersteer/electrics and more miles on it than Courtney Love.

I haven't had the pleasure of a Coppermix twin but from all accounts its the biz. What kind of wheel HP/KW are you making?

I have an HKS twin...every day is a driving experience lol..The unsprung HKS my Tuner put in by mistake...First day - caught on the freeway in a traffic jam but it was a free clutch for 3 weeks and I managed to get in a few passes at the drags so I'm not complaining lol

Sad on the beater though...nova lol

i could think of half a dozen workshops right now that would be better than nissan :(

Its not the best, but i'd be waiting for the verdict on the failure before going to get something new.

Being that many people have them, and never have issues (cars making some fairly good mumbo, and regular drag racing/launching etc) something must be amiss with yours without a doubt.

Nismo Coppermix are good from all reports. My OS twin is nasty to some people, however i think its fine.

But everyone has a different view on clutches

Yeah unfair to say that Jims clutch is a piece of crap, must be some explanation, and if there is something wrong with it, im sure hed look after you.

Ive got a HKS Twin built by Jim and its bloody great. Solid centre, still good everyday, makes noise but is nice and bitey. I love it.

NPC, with help from Elite Racing has come up with these awesome clutch/flywheel packages for the more heavily modified vehicle. All Bigmouth kits include Billet Lightened Flywheel (6.5kg), Clutch plate, Pressure plate and throwout bearing.

Bigmouth Street uses a full face organic clutch plate and is designed for street use with the occasional track or drag outing. These kits will hold in excess of 300-320rwkw and will drive almost like the factory item.

Bigmouth Track uses a 5 button carbotic clutch plate and is designed for street/track cars that output more power and suffer a bit more punishment. These kits will hold in excess of 500rwkw. They will drive almost like a factory item but with a much sharper engagement. Pedal feel is almost the same as stock.

NPC Bigmouth Street - Suit R32, R33 GTST, R32GTR (pushtype), R34 GTS, RB20/25 in any other models excl. Neo.

NPC Bigmouth Track - Suit R32, R33 GTST, R32GTR (pushtype), R34 GTS, RB20/25 in any other models excl. Neo.

These clutches look like a goer, I will be after one when money permits :P

They have the antiburst cover as all good clutches should so you can rest assured if you dump it a 5K your legs will stay attached to your body

What power are you making??? My GTS-T made 399rwkw with one of Jims "Full monty" kits and I never had any problems other than breaking boxes. I could drop the clutch in 3rd gear from a standing start and turn the tyres to smoke. Do you have any oil leaks that might have made it to the clutch???

When I pulled my clutch out to change to auto, after over 2 years of abuse it was pretty worn but never ever slipped.

well my tuner finally got it out for me

not a failure so to speak but its welded to the pressure plate and has left materail on the flywheel aswel, thickness is still good, no grease contamination, you can see its got hot but its only contact surface not signficat enough to discolor anything.

I dunno yet, will ship it off to Jim on monday

This is a common sight for gtrs that do big launches,burnouts drift or drag when you have done a big launch or any of the others put you foot on the clutch for a bit or change up and down gears to let the clutch cool down I was told by a mate whom builds clutches and has done for the last 20 years to do this or they get that hot and will fuse them self to the fly wheel hope this helps but maybe a little to late by the sounds of it ....luke

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
