Question: Flinders St/williams St. Speed Camera

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm very curious about something... the other night I was on my way to buy a HDD from someone and saw a flash as I went over a traffic light intersection, anyways, I thought I had gone over it as it turned red as I was looking all over for street names as I was not 100% sure where I should be going...

SO, I received a fine today, it's for the same place, but dated before I went out that night to get the HDD. It's for doing 60km/h in what I thought was a 60km/h zone, but it turns out it's 50km/h, and to be absolutely honest I thought it was a 60km/h zone and I can almost swear that I don't see any signage referring to speed limit leading up to that speed camera, but that could just be me, and I may need to take a drive up there to make sure, hence I'm asking here do I have any contest here? Or was I just retarded and not reading the signs 100% like I should, or is there a blanket speed limit for any city-like area?

More specifically, the location of the camera is here (Williams St/Flinders St).

Seeing as I have fine #2 certainly on it's way, that's 6 points - I have no idea about the demerit system as it's not really my intention to ever have deal with it, so how does this work? From what I know, there's a total of 12 maximum demerits, and after that it's license suspension? I obviously have hefty finage to now pay, which is shit enough. How long do demerits last for before they expire?

Thanks for your help, please no sarcasm or griefers, don't really need that right now. :P

hey dude .um well unfortunatly legaly they dont have to have speed sighns in everypart of a street just like every 600 meters or what ever so that cant be protested against which sux and the road rule is 50km in all built up areas ie ( near houses shoping centres, places where there is a lot of ppl unless otherwise marked..so its pretty hard to dodge the bullet.sorry bro

but dated before I went out that night to get the HDD.

sooo.... they said you were there when you actually weren't? i don't quite understand.. if you can prove that their timing system is out that might help your cause a bit.. but yeah the general rule is 'if there's no sign it's 50'..

bad luck mate, i feel your pain..

Na dude, I was driving there a while ago before I got the HDD - but never saw the flash during day-time. I have even SEEN people get flashed here at night when I wasn't driving, I just assumed they were going faster than 60km/h :P. So the other fine is definitely coming. As far as I know I've driven by there a few times... so maybe I'm totally fu!ked.

50 in built up areas, blanket and much publicised etc etc. So you cant get away with it.

As for it being not when you thought - i doubt that.

however if you think its wrong go view the photo and you'll be able to see if its your car or not (details are on the back of the form i believe)

+1 - If there's a chance it's not you, go and buy a copy of the photo. A guy from back home got done for using (and speeding on) CityLink with no pass, and the rego on the fine was for his tractor. If the plate's obscured or slightly illegible, they just send it to the closest match.

Otherwise, as said - If it's unsigned, it's 50. So i don't think you've got anywhere to go on that one. And you're tagged with the points for three years.

    • I appreciate the detailed explanation, think I understand now. I spent the better part of last night reading what I could about shuffle and potential solutions. I had replaced the OEM twin turbo pipe with an alternate Y pipe that is separated further away from the turbo. The current one is from HKS and I had a previous pipe that was separated even further away, both have shuffle. I had heard that a divider can be welded in to the OEM pipe to remove turbulence, and figure that aftermarket pipes that are more separated would achieve the same thing. From what I read, most people with -10 turbos get shuffle due to their size, though it's a bit less common with -5s on a standard RB26. I think Nismoid mentioned somewhere it's because OEM recirculation piping is common in Australia with -5 cars. It seems that the recommendation tends to vary between a few options, which I've ordered in what I think is most feasible for me:  1. Retune the MAP or boost controller to try to eliminate shuffle 2. Install OEM recirculation piping 3. Something called a 'balance pipe' welded onto the exhaust manifolds. I don't know if kits for this are available, seems like pure fabrication work 4. simply go single turbo My current layout is as follows: Garrett 2860 -5s HKS Racing Suction intake MAF delete pipes HKS racing chamber intake piping hard intercooler piping,  ARC intercooler HKS SSQV BOV and pipe Haltech 2500 elite ECU and boost solenoid/controller HPI dump pipes OEM exhaust manifolds HKS VCAM step 1 and supporting head modifications Built 2.6 bottom end All OEM recirculation piping was removed, relevant areas sealed off I'll keep an eye out for any alternative solutions but can get started with this.  Only other question is, does shuffle harm the turbo (or anything else)? It seems like some people say your turbo shafts will explode because of the opposing forces after a while and others say they just live with it and adjust their pedal foot accordingly.
    • That worked out PERFECTLY! Thank you big time to JJ. He was able to swap me his stock diff. He drove all the way to me as well. Killer! Removal & install was pretty straightforward. The diff itself is HEAVY. So that’s a 2 man job.  Man does the car drive nice now! Couldn’t have worked out any better 👌
