Hey guys, new here as you can see

Picked up my 99 rs4 last sat, have always loved the stags and finally found the one i wanted.

Was excited to finally have h.i.d headlights, only to find out they've been ripped out and replaced with ordinary globes.

In one of the back storage compartments i found the ballasts and the original gas reduction globes, but from what i can tell it doesn't look like they even came out of this stagea. The fittings are completely different as to what would fit into the back of the headlights in it.. and the wiring colours are different.

I was thinking maybe to be complianced they've replaced the headlights with S1 units and just kept the 'xenon' covers on them?

has anyone still got the h.i.d lights in theirs and is able to post up a pic of the back of a light?

I don't know who would have done the wiring on the lights theyve been replaced with, but from an auto sparkies point of view its an abortion of a job. Bare wires hanging out all over the place. Thats why im keen to re wire the xenons in asap.

its been a week and one day, and so far ive had 4 different people call it a hearse :cool:

they would have put an adapter plate inside the opening to convert them from D2R HIDs to H1 bulbs, just pry it out, probably siliconed in.

I did the rewire on mine, i had to buy a new plug harness and D2R bulbs (ebay). Easy enough to rewire, 3 wires from memory, +ve, -ve and a 'safety' wire which prevents power to the harness without the bulbs in place, if using an aftermarket harness i think this wire needs to be earthed ?? in order to overide the safety circuit. Best to pull out the whole headlight assemblies to see what you have left in place and a lot easier to do the re-wire. These are high voltage, so any joining should be done properly, with proper heatshrink etc, not insulating tape. The wires into your bulbs now should be the wires which were going into your ballast. Mine were cut so short i had to open up the ballast and re-solder new wires onto the circuit board (which is contained inside a block of insulating silicon). Pm me if you have any qu's.

being an auto sparky i do this kinda thing all week at work.. and when it comes to my owns cars i kinda lack motivation. And on top of all the mates wanting jobs done on weekends lol.

2 mechanics and an auto sparky in the family, and all our cars sit around with mechanical and electrical faults :)

Few other things im yet to work out.. like the button on the left side of the wheel, shows both diffs, the 4 wheels and in the middle an 's'. I thought it was snow mode maybe, but there's a snow mode button in front of my centre console behind the gearstick. It's not shown in the manual.

just locks the 4wd into a 50:50 split...for snow as well, not recommend for use on hard surfaces due to the stress it puts through the transfer case, can come in handy ie. about the only time ive used it is on slippery boat ramps and backing the trailer up my steep lawn.

    • The oil pressure sensor for logging, does it happen to be the one that was slowly breaking out of the oil block? If it is,I would be ignoring your logs. You had a leak at the sensor which would mean it can't read accurately. It's a small hole at the sensor, and you had a small hole just before it, meaning you could have lost significant pressure reading.   As for brakes, if it's just fluid getting old, you won't necessarily end up with air sitting in the line. Bleed a shit tonne of fluid through so you effectively replace it and go again. Oh and, pay close attention to the pressure gauge while on track!
    • I don't know it is due to that. It could just be due to load on track being more than a dyno. But it would be nice to rule it out. We're talking a fraction of a second of pulling ~1 degree of timing. So it's not a lot, but I'd rather it be 0... Thicker oil isn't really a "bandaid" if it's oil that is going to run at 125C, is it? It will be thicker at 100 and thus at 125, where the 40 weight may not be as thick as one may like for that use. I already have a big pump that has been ported. They (They in this instance being the guy that built my heads) port them so they flow more at lower RPM but have a bypass spring that I believe is ~70psi. I have seen 70psi of oil pressure up top in the past, before I knew I had this leak. I have a 25 row oil cooler that takes up all the space in the driver side guard. It is interesting that GM themselves recommend 0-30 oil for their Vette applications. Unless you take it to the track where the official word is to put 20-50w oil in there, then take that back out after your track day is done and return to 0-30.

    • I take it that the knock retard is from bearings tapping a little tune? Thicker oil is a fragile bandaid. You need a much bigger oil cooler and probably the bigger pump being discussed.
