CR34M
I don't quite understand the power-band people are talking about. how they kick in since my mate has a VTiR and even when he floors it, my NON turbo R34 can comfortably pass him... I guess his car is stuffed? or is that just the almighty V-Tec i have heard ohh so much about? How come Wheels Magazine never mentioned V-Tec as the GODZILLA of FWD cars etc? Hmmm.....i'll sleep on it, maybe ill wake up a V-Tec fanboy and sell my dreams of owning a GT-R Ps. As for the owners of V-Tecs and the like who mention their superior handling, Impreza's do a damn decent job with AWD functionality to grip and are cheap too, not to mention the STi's etc that at least have some usable power if you needed that too, And going slightly off topic, if i had to settle for something other than a Skyline/Other Nissan's, i think personally although i hate them, it would be a Ford XR6 Turbo....they arn't too shabby. sanjuu-ni
Wot? We are talking about the Type-R, right? The "race car for the road" models? Of course it was designed to be firm and noisy. Its not like they accidentally seam welded the chassis and forgot to include sound deadening in the bill of materials. The VTiR was designed to "handle well and perform well on just 1.8L" while still being a comfortable streeter. Surely, if you owned one and you're an enthusiast you'd know what the design brief for any proper Type-R model is (i.e. not the shitty DC5 we got foisted upon us, or the CTRs the Poms made) to be a road car that is trackable off the showroom floor. Honda's design objective wasn't to make a firm noisy car. Those characteristics were the unwelcome side effects of stiffening up the suspension and removing weight. And was it really a race car for the road? Honda's sales brochures may included plenty of photos of it on the track and promoted it with the races up at Indy, but it was sold as a ROAD car that could be used on the track for supersprints. It was first and foremost a road car. That's why it came with carpets, a radio, air conditioning, a back seat etc. I've already acknowledged its excellent handling, with that impressive diff. Is now the time to mention that the brakes are slightly over-servoed, the steering doesn't have the feel of an MX5 and the seats dont suit everyone? Porsche got it wrong with the 968CS, too. Far too stiff for the road, yet thousands of dollars away from being a racing car. I haven't driven an NSX-R, but the standard car is quite firm enough for Australian roads. And who wants to live without air conditioning and a radio? A proper homologation special, like a stripped down Porsche 911 SC RS or Escort RS1800, created for a motorsport purpose, seems more relevant than stiff road cars where the marketing department has had as much input as the engineering department.... Lithium
I don't quite understand the power-band people are talking about. how they kick in since my mate has a VTiR and even when he floors it, my NON turbo R34 can comfortably pass him...I guess his car is stuffed? or is that just the almighty V-Tec i have heard ohh so much about? I feel there is probably something missing from this story - like his car being auto, or you have already got 20kph on him before he floors it, or something along those lines. I remember a dude with an RB30DE R33 that used to be convinced he was catching a mate of mines Integra track car on the straights etc - he had in his head his car was quicker almost everywhere yet somehow the Integra was around 10s a lap faster (for ~1:20 laps) and to everyone watching the Skyline may as well have been cruising around the track. Horses for courses, people seem to be acting like Honda guys think their Civic would smoke a modded GTR or whatever but I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere in this thread. Here is a vid taken from a good mate of mine's non-Type-R Integra car taken at the local race track at an open day, the two Skylines you see in it are a grey one (RB20DET with a TD05 - making about 200wkw) and a Burgundy one (RB30DET with T3/T4 making about 250kw @ wheels at the time) are other mates of mine. The blue KP Starlet in the vid runs a turbo 4AGE. scathing
Honda's design objective wasn't to make a firm noisy car. Those characteristics were the unwelcome side effects of stiffening up the suspension and removing weight. But not an unknown one. They made a choice, knowing the pros and cons. Weight reduction and stiff suspension is the mark of a track car. Sounds like a design objective to me. That's why it came with carpets, a radio, air conditioning, a back seat etc. Only if you bought a later model. The original DC2R didn't have aircon, and the stereo was a no-cost option. It didn't go hardcore with a half cage and no rear seats, but with those front seats it was still as track focused as they felt they could make it while meeting the road car minimum requirements. the steering doesn't have the feel of an MX5 Welcome to the world of FWD. Honda couldn't afford to re-engineer the car for RWD, but they made the best effort they could with the helical differential. Once again, a choice. Lithium
Nice vid there Lithium, fwiw I think its the occasional Honda owner such as these that contribute to their reputation... Not 100% sure what your point is - those types of threads appear in all sorts of forums. I couple pick any, hell this one is pretty sad. Someone even implied their NA R34 can deal to 1.8 VTEC Integras, that kind of talk belongs alongside a thread about a dude claiming his VTEC Integra can smoke GTRs. As usual in those threads there are some with wool over their eyes and others who are saying "WTF mate?" Lithium
I agree, point is that it happens to be the honda owners its associated with most often This is true, but thats not the fault of Honda owners. You may get it more often with Honda owners as the entry level "performance" Hondas are cheaper than the entry level "performance" Skylines so you end up with younger and more predisposed to that kind of behaviour people owning them. There are an aweful lot of Honda owners who do not think that way.... I would say the vast majority of the ones I know are some of the more switched on people I know. Bliksem
Yup, agree entirely I've never personally met any of the brainwashed owners who think they are the quickest thing on the street, but it definately seems easy to find them on the US forums. The H22A accord my mate converted was done at a time where there was no information around, definately switched on. He gave that car hell too, if theres one thing you cant fault them on its reliability. mad082
i know a girl who bought a new motor for her civic and was told it was a v-tec motor, but it only had a v-tec rocker cover, LOL. i also have a mate with a crx and he took it to the drags and ran a 16.4. i laughed. now i want to take the missus pulsar and see if i can beat his time by more than a second. i reakon it should jusging by the times other people get from theirs. i actually don't mind fwd cars. they can be more exciting to drive. sure you can't hang the back out, but torque steer can keep you entertained. but then not all FWD cars do it. the missus' SSS pulsar torque steers like you wouldn't believe (although it is a lot better now that i got a wheel alignment) and it only has 112fwhp, and yet my magna (which ran a 14.8 at willowbank) i could accelerate full biscuit and not have a hand on the wheel. Carby, I presume? One of my mates have cracked into the 13s with a not overly modified VTEC CRX. In NZ we have a scoreboard of the quicker times done by NA Hondas, before anyone gets excited about stripped out/slicks cars - they have to race as "pro import" otherwise they have to be legal tyres, interior, exhaust so this score board has it listed. Times on the board have to be proven, so its not just made up stuff. There is a cut off below 14.4 because otherwise the list would be way too big... most virtually standard VTEC Hondas with a decent driver will do 14s. http://nzhondas.com/forum/competition/4411...core-board.html Edited October 15, 2008 by Lithium Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/239154-hondas-and-their-vtecs/page/5/#findComment-4196264 Share on other sites

R34P3R
my friend has a 2003 integra luxury with i-vtec and that thing is alright. it cant beat my r34 in a straight but kicked my lagging ass in the hills and would probably have a upperhand on a track. his car has basic mod, exhaust, pod and springs. ive been in his car countless times when he has raced. he kept up with a 94 holden ute [looked modded aswell] oh a highway run. he has beaten auto s13 turbo's and 300zx and on the hills it will outrun evo's and wrx's. its a really nice car to drive aswell, very smooth and his exhaust note is really sexy. his friend has a b18c[think its the right one, type R engine] in his eg civic and that thing kills all the turbo cars he goes against. burkill
there is doubting a eg6 with a engine swap is a weapon lol. my mates 800 kilo crx with b16a tuned n worked off it's tits would scare half the cars on here, and probably slaughter the other half. i've only heard good about this integra, i'll to try one, but definatly an jdm one.
