Hey all,

I'm currently looking seriously at 3 skylines from my mates brother's import dealership. All of them are series II r33 turbos, but two of them are modded, and one is completely standard. I'm thinking that I will get the standard one since it is slightly cheaper and I'm not really extremely keen on the mods which have been done to the other two cars anyway.

Here is the standard one:

And here are the two modded ones:

Now, a few of my mates have been telling me to consider getting the modded ones just cuz even though I may not like the mods, I can always sell them, and put the cash towards mods I like. All three cars are around the 27k$ with the standard one being a few grand less. Another inticing thing about the standard one is that it will be the first to be inspected under the new import system, so it should be the best condition out of the three (or so I'm told... that could be just a sales pitch). Anyway I'd like to hear your opinions!

Insurance is going to be a bitch. I'm turning 18 in 2 months and am yet to get my Ps. My dad reckons I should just get third party and get a tracking device in case it gets stolen. Are there any fool proof (or close to fool proof) security systems? Any advice with security or insurance would be much appreciated!

Cheers people!

OK a couple of things to think about.

Once all the modded cars have been sold from the lots, the price of modded cars will raise -alot. It costs a bloody fortune to mod a car.

Take for example the front bar on the grey car, looks like a BN sports(just a guess, not too sure)??? To get a genuine one into aust would cost you 1.5k+, the wheels, second hand in good condition, 2-2.5K. Looks like it has a FMIC? 2k new, 1.2 second hand. (ideal if you want to turn up the boost a bit) Probably also has a cat back system, add another 1k. Probalby also has suspension done? 1-1.5k Thats about 8.5k in mods. What else is done? you are porbably looking at a car that is putting down 180+rwkw, pay a few hundred dollars more for a SAFC and you could well have 200+rwks (I like the front bar too, if you buy the car and want to sell it, I'll give you $500 and pay shipping to adelaide) The best part is that the mods are done, so you wont be voiding any warranty, which modding a stock car would do.

Now how attractive is the stocker, which will be the same as every other stocker on the road, will loose resale value quicker than a modded car, and you will probably want to start modding one day anyways?

Try getting a list of mods and post it up, this will help give us a better idea of what value you are getting, but be quick, by the looks of the silver car with the aftermarket bar and the 3 spoke wheels, it wont last long.

Some food for thought.

id go the stocko model, just coz id prefer to do the mods myself and you know what mods are done then;

im a believer in stockos being less thrashed than worked models

i got my whale stocko and couldnt have been happier with it

ill do my own mods when i get around to it, still not bored with stock performance

well as you said insurance is a problem for you and a moded skyline will be even more expensive to insure.

i also believe stock cars havent been thrashed as much, and are usually cheaper and attract less attention from pricks who wanna damage or steal your car...

plus you will personalize your car to your taste if you feel the need for mods in the future....

Get the red one, !! i have a red one, and in series two, i have only ever seen 2 other red cars! The colour is brighter than the series one colour, it looks really good in real life.

BUT red fades fast. Best if u can keep it in the garage. The mirrors on mine are really faded and u can see that the paint is far from new.

Heres a pic to my car in the shade, and in the sun, so u can get a good idea of the colour...

If you want a car that is cheap to insure and hasnt been thrashed, wont attract attention.....buy a gemini, or a stock commodore

You may personalise your car if you have the money.

You dont buy a skyline to own a car that wont attract attention, wont get thrashed (thats what they are built for) and you definately dont buy a skyline if you want cheap insurance.

You could build a fully customised 12 sec VH commodore for under 10K, cos they are cheap to mod. A skyline costs a bloody fortune to mod, and if you dont have the money buy it done for you and you will save thousands of dollars.

What an absolute load of hot c0ck.

Some people it would seem really speak crap. If it was illegal, I doubt very much the car would be in the yard.

If the car complies with ADRs, its legal - that simple. Power only really becomes an issue when you start putting on larger turbos, or increasing capacity of the engine. If that were the case you would have to get an engineers report to say the vehicle has the braking capacity and chassis rigidity to handle the power, as well as emissions testing etc and then it would be legal.

There is a guy selling an S13 silvia with an RB25 and twin 2530s, with all the fruit to support its 400rwhp(+?) - and it has an ADR compliance plate for all its mods, and legally registered in NSW.

Check the for sale section, his nick is Nismo King.

Seriously, everything else being equal, but the nicest car with mods. If you dont like the mods, post up in the swap section, and you will be able to make some dollars. But best way, take them for a drive, whichever one drives the best, buy it.

    • Nope.    Grab a varex and turn it down as you get close to home, win win?
    • So, I've had my V36 for about a month now and have already copped an "excessive exhaust noise" notification from QLD TMR, reported by someone in my local area. It's a twin as per the original, and can have a bit of a throaty note to it when idling cold 😄 and if I do get up it a bit, it can be noisy, but it did pass a roadworthy inspection before sale, so.... ... but in the interest of being a good neighbour, I do want to quieten it down a bit. Is anyone here running a quiet aftermarket cat-back on their V36 or 370Z? And the big, bold question: does an aftermarket cat-back really make much of a performance difference on these cars?
    • The wiring diagram for the R33 RB25 is freely available, and is essentially the same same as most other RBs (just with differences as to which pin # does which job). To get the ECU to power up, you just need to provide power to the ECCS relay, and have the other power feeds that come in from the top left of the wiring diagram (wrt the ECU) that give perma power to the fuel pump relay, the ECU itself, etc etc, all connected. When you put power on all these it will just come to life. It's pretty clear from the diagram what needs to happen. Just follow the lines from the 12V + supply stuff in the top left over towards the ECU. I've even posted snips of such diagrams (not for vanilla 25, I think for Neo and 26) to various threads here in the last few months, talking about what it takes to get the fuel pump and FPCM up and going. Search these up and they will help get you started on doing the same with the vanilla 25 diagram. Hell, for all I know, I've done the same with that one in years past and have forgotten.
    • Yep...so unless someone posts up the answer you will need to probe from the ECU connector to the dash plug with a multi meter in continuity mode to trace the wires.  Note the ECU has multiple - and + (and across different key settings - Battery, IGN and Start) and most likely the power is fed from the connector(s) that is normally near the left hand headlight.
    • Thanks Duncan, I am actually just trying to get the Rb turning and running with the RB25DET S2 original loom itself  I am just trying to get it going outside the body and not thinking about the S15 or trying to match anything to the S15 loom at all I am only trying to see if anyone has done this and what pin they found to be the ignition trigger and ECU+/- on the dash connector, that's about it. Thanks
