Technically the law states that a blue light is an emergency vehicle colour therefore cannot be displayed on a vehicle and that red is a brake light colour and therefore can only be pointing rearwards of the car.

I know you're only going to use them when stationary, but didn't someone say blue/red neons aren't legit as emergency services use those coloured flashing lights?

I'm pretty sure that:

When Parked/stationary: Anythings Legal

When Moving: Red and Blue are both Illegal

just to inform you tyson.. that the laws are not defined..

you are best to go to your local police department and ask.. try get a letter.. cuase it is illegal to have neons turned on on any bitumen (parked/moving.. and yes this includes car parks.. stupid rules i know but they are the rules and they will book you.. and yes i do know this as fact as i had them on in my street parked up... i wasnt even in the car.. just showing off LOL and the cops came through the street.. i got off luckily cuase it wasnt a main road but they made me remove the power to get off

once again don't let it turn you off having them.. just be cautious..

Wow, thats stupid. I'll talk to the police before i buy them then. Since i want to at least be able to have them on when parked, otherwise theres like no other time to have them on.

no shit

In this state, it's illegal to have them on at any time on any public road. I have had highway patrol see them and I said they were just for shows, not even plugged in for the road.

Even though I like them, they are 99% useless

yeah some cops will try to snap you for having them on the car.. not on or anything.. i have investigated this alot and the same principle comes up.. as i stated it is simply that the law hasnt gone into any depth so it is upto the police officer to determine what the law states (basically is he a wanker)... exactly tyson... if neons were allowed to be turned on when the car is motionless you would see hundreds of parked cars with neons switched on..

you can have them turned on when your are in your driveway.. or someone elses driveway...but if your on the side of the road.. thats a no no.. you just gotta decide if you think it's worth the risk and if so then do it.. most police wont get you for having the neon bars on your car (as long as they are off) unless you wanna be a f**k wit, or you argue with them..

When I was young and stupid, I put blue parker lights in my car and took it into the local police station (SA) and the cop said they were fine as long as my headlights were brighter than them. But then I was told to take them off when I was driving in Tasmania.

one cop can say one thing.. but doesnt mean its technically right.. just like some will say a BOV is illegal :P... thats why i suggested that if you want them on the car.. and you really care about not getting a defect.. then i'd go to the local cop station and ask.. then get a signed letter (the higher ranking the better) and then you can show it to a cop and if they still defect... take it to court and show the letter stating that you was told it was ok... if they were wrong typing the letter they will at least clear the defect and remove the fine (although this will require you take them off)..

oh and i would also get a letter from your states transport stating the rules..

Yeah i'll get a letter if i can. Then it won't be my fault hahah, i can then blame another police officer. And if someone tells me they are just plain illegal, i'll try to find a cop that says they are legal when stationary.

Good luck getting a cop to write a letter sticking up for your borderline defectable mod.

it is defectable.. the only borderline thing about it is to when they can defect you for it.. as the law isnt stated in detail.. so i would get a letter from an approved state transport authority..ToMmAh did this i believe for when the cops accused him of a locked diff when it was just re shimmed.. go qld section and PM him if you can't find where to go for this..

the coppers.. doubt you'd get a letter.. i didnt (even though i had beenleigh police state that neons arent illegal on the car until you switch them on) but then i'd have the gold coast police harrass me saying "we'll defect you for those neons"... etc etc.. they will use it as a scare factor.. i never got defected with them on the car but switched off.. so you'll pretty much be ok.. however get a wank cop.. or if you argue with them.. expect a court appearance

all a letter will do is stop them from fining you (maybe) and to remove the defect you will of course be required to remove the neons

one thing i always thought.. was if there was no power (remove the power connection to the neons) then surely they are just a bar of plastic attached to your car and not classified as neons as they arent doing anything.. kinda the same as a pod filter in your engine bay not connected.. or a boost controller on your dash with no wires connected.. surely this is a loophole as they arent doing diddley squat... this is why i connected all my neons to the fuses under the steering wheel (in a holden though) that way when i got pulled over i'd open the compartment and pull the power wire and claim they arent even hooked up.. just something to look into

    • Well, I'm tired. I'm tired because about 4PM yesterday, before today's appointment someone immediately bought my bumper. They couldn't get it any other day as they're on the way back to NSW. So I had to do that big GTR conversion I had been planning. Unfortunately, the information on SAU about what you need and how this is done is incomplete. So what should be a simple bolt on affair, yeah, it's not. Did you know if you use all GTR items the bonnet won't close? This little manuever sent me into about 1am the night before trying to dodge a way to get it closed. I will have to revisit this in the next few days  - or maybe not, I may let a body shop figure it out. It all needs to come up and my motivation to pull the bumper off is low. It also seems to hit things in the bay where the GTT bonnet didn't. Yes I used 100% new OEM GTR items. Today, I had the joy of driving to the dyno looking like this: Given I had roughed in the fuel and given sensible but pretty conservative timing, I didn't really bet on having the car drive out any real difference than when it drove in. Sadly due to a miscommunication and laptop fun and games (and almost bricking the dongle, prayers and firmware updates indeed), I ended up using HP Tuner credits to licence the car that was already licenced. So in the end my laptop was used. It turns out my butt dyno is still well calibrated after all this time. The 325kw was on 74% Ethanol, the 313kw line was on 98. The other line is the 'before' line which was 281kw. While the numbers are pretty low, they're pretty in line with what you'd expect. Even if US dynos bump the whole result up about 50KW, gaining 10-15% is similar gains.  The curve of the cam is pretty much spot on with what was discussed as well. All this said, it still feels bad to not see the number you secretly want to see. Even if the car drove great beforehand, and I knew pretty confidently the car would drive out much the same way it drove in due to the nature of a wellish dialled in LS1 not gaining much if anything at all from being tuned from where it was. As expected, the car isn't particularly sensitive to running it at anywhere between 12.0 and 13.0 - And the initial timing at 20deg and 12.0 made 308KW. So 3 degrees of timing, and leaning it out to 12.7 for 5kw, anything above stopped giving any benefit until E85 (which has an additional 2 deg as before). Car itself behaved entirely fine. I found out that 100C = 1.15V! IAT at about 7pm was 19C. I might mess with the bonnet mounting.. but given the REO NEEDS TO BE CHOPPED TO FIT A GTR BAR this is possibly something I may leave gathering (more) dust until it returns to paint jail.
