Another new R32 owner! (Beware...Newbie questions!!)

Hi all,

First time poster, lurked for a while tho....I decided I'd wait until I actually bought a Skyline b4 I posted!

So yeah, I'm a long time skyline fan and finally got myself an R32 GTS-t after searching for 18 months. Now that I have one - the obsession has begun! ;) It's gunmetal grey, a genuine low km item, quite a few performance mods, near perfect body and interior - I've attached a pic (observant ppl will recognise it from carsales.com.au), I'm yet to take my own pics, too busy driving it!!! :D

So yeah, I've actually already got a few questions for you knowledgable R32 owners:

1. My rear view mirror - it's loose as a mofo and has flecks of black plastic inside the glass, rung a few Nissan wreckers to see if they had a replacement part, most don't deal with imports....So, anybody know if any other Nissan rear view mirror fits the R32? Or somewhere I can get a genuine item? Was thinking Nissan because they sold the GTR here but I'd imagine they'd be pricey.

2. 4 times now since I've owned the car (just over a week), the engine has sortof mis-fired, each time on light throttle, then runs fine. I was thinking maybe the coils need cleaning? I also plan to reset the ECU as well, could this be another potential solution?

3. How do you guys launch your R32 to get a decent take-off, quick but not tyre-melting (I can manage those it seems!!)? Had a few V6 Common-whores cut me off because the turbo lag caught me unaware!! ;)

Well that's it! Hope to go on some VIC cruises some time soon.

Nice R32...welcome 2 the club!!!

1. thats not black paint but rather the reflective coating coming off of the back face of the glass!!!!!

2. check threads on this site......heaps on misfires

3. own R33 so not too sure 'bout launching a RB20

enjoy driving the 'line........

if it has a lot of performance mods but no ECU then i would get that tuned first of all... this could be why your car is misfiring depending on exactly what you mean.

Dr_Drift would be the man to get that tuned...

not sure about the mirror... its been so long since my 32 has been parked at my house i cant even remember what the interior looks like :D

Car looks nice btw... has the same bar as mine had before a carpark claimed it as a victim (stockish height). Cant wait to see it on a cruise, im probably one of the biggest 32 lovers u will find.

Inark - spot on, it's got a catback 3.5" exhaust, new steel wheel/ball bearing centre on standard RB20 turbo, dual-stage bleed valve running 12psi low boost, (16 psi high boost is like being fired from a cannon!!!), some kind of fuel cut defender, catch can, HKS BOV and pod.....BUT....no ECU tune. It also has a major flat spot in 2nd at around 3.5k to 4k full throttle (due to ECU no doubt) The mis-fire is kindof like a hiccup if you get my meaning??!

Yeah saw the pics of your 32 'line awhile back, recognised that you used to have that same front bar, did you once mention that it is a Nismo item? Hehehehe, mine is *very* low and scrapes on just about anything so I'm gonna have to be careful by the sounds of it!!

yeah i was told it was a nismo item... all the stock 32s were released with the uglier one without the lower vents. But its yet to be proved... so it may not be.

hehe chris and marie....

tune it as quick as possible.... get the ecu done and see how it goes.

just remembered... theres a place in NZ i ordered some of the GTR parts i needed for my front end conversion which has a lot of parts... they will most likely have the GTR mirror which should be the exact samething...

its the GTR Shop... http://www.gtr.co.nz/

my dads coming over for a holiday from NZ in december so if u want to save on freight he can get it for u from there.

Yeah I've noticed many R32's in my travels with the uglier front bar and having looked at so many I've also noticed the sheer number of what seem to be options or model variation for Nissans of that age. Some R32s have blue backed instrumentation, most grey, others black. My friend used to own an R32, his dash illumination was a green colour, mine is red. His had a little draw under the stereo that came outwards when you pushed it, mine has a compartment with a lid similar to the ashtray thingy beneath it. (both '92 models as well) He had front bar with driving lights but it was different to mine, then there is the other Type M front bar with no lights at all...So much variety, no locally delivered car can match it!

Do you know how much (approx is fine) it would cost to get a Dr_Drift ECU retune? I'm assuming it would require time on a dyno?

doxximus - thanx man but the entire mirror is stuffed, I had to bind the metal ball that allows it to pivot in electrical tape to keep it from moving constantly!!

Inark - thanx, I'll email them and see if they can get one!

I'm betting a U12 Pintara or R31 Skyline/Pintara mirror is similar, I'll have to check some wreckers and find out!

RaseR, welcome! nice ride, love the rims ;)

if you can't get a mirror you should be able to get a generic type from a local manufacturer that have them stuck to the windscreen - that way just sack the factory one and get a bodyshop or someone who knows how to stick a new mirror to the windscreen :D

Hey Ronin 09 - thanx man! I also love the rims!! :D

They're Longchamps - some Japanese brand, really suit the car especially due to the fact that they are also gunmetal grey!

Hmm, good idea bout the stick-on mirror, that's what my old car had - if all else fails I'll look into it!

normally the blue backed dials are from mid 92 models to 89. i have grey with the green lights, mines a late 92 model.

Dr Drift ECU... not too sure what he charges these days for a swap over... about $250ish if u want it tuned on the dyno i have no idea... he just chipped mine to a map which should suit my mods so i didnt even have to test it on a dyno it just ran bloody well! :D

WazR32GTSt - Yep I'm a big fan of the R32 styling, not so much the R33, although I must say I do like the R33 Series 2 with a stealth wing....

Inark - thanx for that man, figured it'd be around that price, so is it an addon chip or do you swap your stock ecu for a remapped one?

mine are the black but with red illumination mixed with blue in the centre, so i can see the redline.

      Could you modify this duct so instead it pushes the extra air through the radiator too and not down and out? For temps, I know it's not the greatest idea, but as a bit of a last resort, you could use a very intermittent misting spray onto the front of the coolers/rad. You don't want to be soaking them such that water is dripping off, but a small most on/off so that the water evaporates. That point of it constantly evaporating, rather than being soaked in water, will pull a LOT of heat out of the cooler. I'm literally thinking just the little mist sprayers for a garden from Bunnings. Being in a low humidity climate it will help even more! The other trick if you want to be ghetto is some shade cloth hung in the opening, and keep it wet. Pretty much now it's acting like an evap cooler on a house, but cooling the air you need to use to cool the radiator...   On a topic to think about too though, when air enters through the bumper, is it all nicely ducted from the edges of that opening back at a nice angle, or is it like most cars, and the edge of the opening just stops, and suddenly it's wayyy wider behind that? If it does the later, get it shrouded out at nice angles. When that opening changes too rapidly, it can actually cause a high pressure zone between the front bar and radiator, and limit air flow into that area, which means less air for cooling, as it effectively stalls the air, AND adds to drag...

      It doesn't look like there's a lot of options out there these days, and what's out there is performance oriented aftermarket stuff (with the GTR markup) I wonder if there are other cars with similar springs, after all its just a matter of length, diameter and stiffness. Alternatively, I did see coil spacers. Probably not the best option, but could be serviceable too.
