How To Prep For Drags In My Gtr?.....im I 1st Timer...

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, i just done a few practise launches...and i can definitely say anything under 6000 just bogs, and is slower than just putting my foot down from idle.....as when it bogs it kind of jumps, bunny hops??

6500-7000 seems the best compromise, though even then it feels like its got way too much traction, is it my stiff suspension, my aggressive camber, or my 265 tyres that could be causing this???.......

Basically it doesnt fell like a full blown GTR launch at all, more like a get me going sort of launch if that makes any sense.....my limiter is at 7500 so i dont see it getting any better....

Any ideas?....would lowering tyre pressure from 32psi help, or make it more grippy?

...i done a test 1/4, and with a real bad bog bunny hop launch at 4000, i managed a 13.5@203km with 317awkw.....does this sound about right?...so i dont know how much time the bog launch took off, but im hoping for a low 12...

Thanks in advise...

Not really. A 126 mph trap speed with a 13.5 second ET doesn't really add up. Was this at WSID? Or with some other kind of equipment?

Just take it out and have fun with it, don't worry about aiming for an ET or going in with expectations. The car will run what it runs.

A high 11 is the goal for you my friend and very achieveable.

Stacey used to race with around 320KW at all four...she could 60' the car in the high 1.6's (best 1.690) this was done without a burnout and holding the car at 7500rpm prior to launch. Id set the tyres for her at 22psi as i didn't want it to wander too much on her in the deep end. She would side-step the clutch off the line though to get it out of the hole, so dont be scared to be a little brutal. A few pops of the fuel cut rev limit will even generate a little boost so it doesn't bog. A small amount of rear wheel spin will bring the fronts into play earlier also.

Now...get it to the track!

As suggested a sidestep is a good way to go. You have traction control at your right foot for driving out of the hole, you don't need to go the mash the pedal necessarily.

It can be very exciting to do the whole race but, there is plenty to get out of the 60ft first. Try to listen and observe what the car is doing each time initially to get the most from the practice and try not to care too much about the full 1/4. The gear changes are easy by comparison on low powered cars like these but, the 60ft is all about consistancy and finding the formula for your perfect launch.

    • You Gregged a whole racetrack!?
    • Look for broken wire or bad connector at the motor. Might not be it, but is worth starting there, as it is easy.
    • Hi everyone, I’m having an issue with my R32 GT-R. Sometimes, when the car goes over a bump or experiences some vibration, the 4WD warning light comes on the dashboard. When I check the code from the control unit in the trunk, it shows Code 19 – ETS Motor. However, everything seems to be working fine — if I turn off the engine and restart the car, the light goes away and everything functions normally. Has anyone experienced this before? Where should I start troubleshooting this issue? Thanks in advance!
    • I'm back from the dyno - again! I went looking for someone who knew LS's and had a roller dyno, to see how it shaped up compared to everything else and confirm the powerband really is peaking where Mr Mamo says it should. TLDR: The dyno result I got this time definitely had the shape of how it feels on the road and finally 'makes sense'. Also we had a bit more time to play with timing on the dyno, it turns out the common practice in LS is to lower the timing around peak torque and restore it to max after. So given a car was on the dyno and mostly dialled in already, it was time for tweaking. Luis at APS is definitely knowledgable when it came to this and had overlays ready to go and was happy to share. If you map out your cylinder airmass you start seeing graphs that look a LOT like the engine's torque curve. The good thing also is if you map out your timing curve when you're avoiding knock... this curve very much looks like the inverse of the airmass curve. The result? Well it's another 10.7kw/14hp kw from where I drove it in at. Pretty much everywhere, too. As to how much this car actually makes in Hub Dyno numbers, American Dyno numbers, or Mainline dyno numbers, I say I don't know and it's gone up ~25kw since I started tinkering lol. It IS interesting how the shorter ratio gears I have aren't scaled right on this dyno - 6840RPM is 199KMH, not 175KMH. I have also seen other printouts here with cars with less mods at much higher "kmh" for their RPM due Commodores having 3.45's or longer (!) rear diff ratios maxing out 4th gear which is the 1:1 gear on the T56. Does this matter? No, not really. The real answer is go to the strip and see what it traps, but: I guess I should have gone last Sunday...
