have to have a look at your dyno sheet (if you have one) to see how well it is holding. if boost is dropping off dramatically at the end of your rev range then yes, a EBC will help. If stable across the rev range then it would be a waste of money unless you intend upping you performance down the track

hey all. i currently have a turbosmart boost controller on my r33.would i benefit performance wise installing a good electronic one?car is stock except for front mount,Hiflow panel filter,and walbro fuel pump.Running 10 psi.

I use a manual boost tee for around 10 psi

they are fine for low boost

but as soon as you start pushing past the 14psi mark they seem to spike all over the place

and yes as Pal said have a look at your boost curve and if its droping from 10 psi to 8psi or something then a EBC will help

but for the time being if your not getting a spike or boost drop then i wont worry about an EBC

I am using a manual bleed valve and i dont have spiking issues. My boost does however drop back from 11psi to around 8 in the top end.

I will add a EBC when dollars permit but for the cheap mans build i would say i dont have a problem with the bleed taps.

This could turn interesting...

Either way, i've never used a EBC.

I've bled upto 24psi (14psi wastegate) and it was fine, no gate creep, no loss of performance.

I know many a car here 20+psi, using just actuators and a bleed or similar free/cheap methods.

The key is to get the actuator as close as you can so the bleed isn't much and therefore you wont have many problems.

Upgraded/modded actuators will also stop the drop off in the upper RPM

An EBC can help bring the boost on a LOT faster than with just the actuator. Depends on how harsh you want your power delivery >_<

Keyword there being - CAN - doesnt mean they do.

I've never had a problem (internal/external gate setups). In/Out of gears or anything like that.

Boost has come just the same as if the gate was wired shut, which would be the perfect example of when boost should be delivered... but obviously we dont all run around with gates wired shut for obvious reasons.

You don't have to have a "problem" to benefit from an ebc.

Have you compared your boost reponse to that when your gate is wired shut? I would hazard a guess that even if you have, it's still a bullshit analogy as with the gate wired shut you're going to be getting off the gas pretty damn quickly before you grenade your engine >_<

There is definately a fairly hefty (at least in my setup) difference between not holding the gate shut and holding it shut till 8.5psi (The reason I don't hold it shut any later is because of the setup and boost coming on so fast, it spikes if I set it over 8.5psi).

The physics involved tell me that a pressure actuator is going to start opening as the pressure builds. I understand there can be some funky gates with fancy progressive spring rates etc that could probably do similar to the SETGAIN feature on my profecB, but in my EXPERIENCE on MY SETUP, the ebc makes a big difference.

HKS heavy duty actuator and set it as close as you can to the desired boost and then bleed valve the rest! Works a treat! Unless you have an external gate then I'm guessing a spring thats closest to what you are aiming for?

You do.

If the actuator is opening before the target level is reached - then you have a problem.

That problem is likely to be a lazy actuator, or one thats in need of some alteration. Possibly vac line is too long, not the right size, there are many things that can be looked into.

Again - If your boost is spiking if you set it up over 8.5psi, you have a problem.

The problem is the gate isnt flowing enough or is restrictive for one of a few reasons.

All this meaning the air is finding the path of least resistance - which is the turbine housing, not the gate, and hence spiking.

The compressor wont spin (make more boost) unless its being turned more, so in order to go above the target PSI, its being spun, and this can only be done if the exhaust is going via the turbine.

You can easily wire a gate shut, ramp up and see the curve - compare with the gate on actuator. Its really not a big drama.

Its certainly not dangerous if you've got half an idea and level of sensibility.

btw - i wasnt using funky gates or anything. Just the factory Garrett housing on a T04E, then a Garrett 45mm ext gate, and now Garrett int gates on GT-SS's.

Not one problem with any of them spiking, poorly controlling boost or otherwise.

Dude, don't try to diagnose on my setup as you know nothing about it. You are trying to to tell me about a hardware problem when it is actually just the nature of ebc settings, you set the SETGAIN too close to the target boost level and it will spike.

    • For these last 7 years of ownership, I've always had to use a small scissor jack under one of the front tow hooks to raise the front just enough so my low-profile jack fits under to reach my subframe jack point. I'm beginning to get annoyed of always having to do this. Are there any lower low-profile jacks that fit under the gtr lip on a dropped car?
    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed 
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
