Skyline Oil Pumps....Questions!!

Recommended Posts

Guest RedLineGTR

OKay i have a r33 gtst i am wondering about the oil pump in them going(failing) at a certain amount of km dont no if it true but someone stated that it was the only downside of the engine itself. With this being true or false dosent really concern me as much.

But what causes oil pumps to stop working or leak enough to destroy the engine. Can i upgrade the oil pump if so what benifits would i get?? Which oil pumps would suit a RB25DET engine.

Thanks Rob

u would never know when the pump is going to pack it but usualy they detiriorate over time although they can just go . keep an eye on your pressure gauge . remember u dont need high pressure to lubricate the engine u need the volume ( its more important than pressure ) and remember the pump has apressure release valve when it reaches a pre set pressure it lets the pessure go so it dont go any higher . on most engines thats about 80 psi but even 30 -40 is enough to keep u r engine healthy as long as the volume is there . i dont know of any upgrades on the oil pumps for rb25s or that the pumps are theit weekness . but remember if the pump stops pumping its only a matter of minutes and the engine is terminaly damaged . ( even 1 minute will stuff up your big ends ) on rb engines number 6 big end will go first . if u race rb26's u need extra baffles in the sump cause as the oil moves around the pick up will run dry and goodbye engine .

What I have heard, and it applies to the majorityof RB engines, is that the heat / cool cycle of the engine causes the bolts holding the oil pump in place to gradually loosen off and oil leaks past the mounting face.

haha

i know this isnt a good explanation

but put it this way

when u do a piss it fows free

imagine pissing a thickshake

not much flow

a lot of pressure

i mean hey its a good enuff explanation

but some pipes in the engine r that small (turbo etc) that a thicker oil isnt going to flow quick enuff and get too hot

sure it protects more but yeah

personally i would use a 10-40 or a 15-40

synth or semi synth

ps dont use helix ultra

made my engine vibrate wickedly and oil pressure was near 0 at idle

and qtr at full rev's

dumped it and all vibration went and oil pressure went back to qtr-4

I just switched to shell helix ultra 5-40 and its great in my r33gtst.

From memory pressure is a tad under 2 when car is at idle (after driving) and goes up to 4 when driving .. more or lss depending on what speed im on ..

I ran the same oil for 10000km (changed at 5000) and didn't have any problems at all aside for slightly lower power and slightly worse fuel economy. The oil pressure was also higher but it never caused any problems.

I've since switched to the cheaper 5W-30 Formula R just for the slightly more power and economy. Oh and the $20 less on each service :( The thinner oil doesn't give any less protection, unless your engine is worn or you are running insane power (1000hp+).

10w-60 is way to thick for the sky , u should use 5w30 or 5w-40 .

i use to use mobil 1 but since the price is to high i use helix ultra 5w-40 .

if u use thick oil u r going to have higher oil pressure not no more protection thinner oil flows better ( less pressure but more volume ).

    • I know people cry at the price of the Getrag 12-14k for a conversion now, but it really is a nice mid point. Not going to get change from 10k on a gearset installed.  $30k++ for sequential.   I know you run the risk of a damaged used one and parts are hard to get but as a street car gearbox its really hard to beat. If you enjoy a more traditional manual, its the choice no question.
