I might have something to help you out.

They've really been cracking down lately, setting up in weird and wonderful places and stopping EVERYONE. I've never seen so much of it as in the past 3 weeks.

Observation - they pulled up approx 10-15 cars while they had me stopped and only pulled the the noise meter out on my car. Fortunately it was right on the border and they let me go. In saying that, he was only about 1-2m max from my zorst... I thought it had to be further than that?

the legal limit is 90. I had mine tested at before i could change rego over. mines just on the limit also, which is good to know cause i know they cant do shit.

i think they have to be 1.5m away from the end of the exhuast and in an open environment. if they do it next to a car or something hard then the sound can bounce of it and make it louder than what it is.

Try telling that to the lil Paki bastard who always shows up at RTA check stations.

Haha.

It is always that same bl00dy guy every time! And there is no way what so ever that he is doing it by the book...

When I was defected, I got done for 95db... Right next to a curb surrounded by a V8 SS Ute and a WRX which were both being tested at the same time, yeh, thats fair.. Went over the RTA station and they just looked at the exhaust and it measured 79db...

I used city exhaust to make a quieter exhaust for rego-easy change over-just the end bit for a standardish if not a bit boring exhaust :(

This falls into the same line as my questioning on the speed camera/radar deal. Same idea: any rules and regs to be found on dB requirements/ testing protocol?

I think all this defect rule is there to provide annoyance to people who own imports.

I don't think RTA people really care about defecting your car to reduce road toll, or improve air quality. They probably know that after the inspection, you'll put the loud exhaust back on anyway.

When we were driving down to Batemans bay, an old lady did about 70km/h in a 100km/h zone for a very long time, single lane highway and overtaking lanes were scarce. She was blocking 20 cars behind her. A number of cars did some seriously dangerous overtaking manuveours, narrowly missing oncoming traffic. None of these were Japanese import sports cars and they were not speeding.

Even more serious accidents happen when you fall asleep at the wheels, even with your eyes open.

Again, this is not related to speeding.

My point is, picking on defects on cars is not related to increased road toll on long weekends.

The slogan should be "Difference in speed kills"... not "Speed kills".

Nobody speeds during double demerit time, but they overtake cars a lot more (because there are some really slow drivers on highways) and drive while sleepy. No wonder road toll still remains high on every long weekends.

    • Hi guys, long time no post as per usual! It's been a busy year so far, the biggest thing being a new job.  After 28 years in the automotive industry I decided it was time for a change.  I was losing faith in the industry and where it's heading.  Now in a completely different industry (electrical) working for a company that manufacture water pump contollers.  Not as sexy as cars but it's an interesting,  challenging industry. I now don't work Saturdays which is a bonus!  It's still 50-55 hours a week but having Saturdays ack after 28 years of working them is awesome!   No news on the GT-R but i did decide to add some more JDM goodness into my life....           1990 300 ZX.  She's not perfect but for a 35 year old car she ain't bad!  Just going to tidy it up a bit and enjoy it.  It's currently auto but will start stockpiling everything for a manual swap. It WILL distract me even further from the GT-R but im hoping not for too long! It somewhat proves a 6'8" freak can fit in a 300 ZX.  Sort of...  I drove it home from the previous owners house in Melbourne via Black Spur and Merton Gap (2 awesome bits of Victorian twisty road) and it was amazing!  Handles so well!!!   I don't think it would be worthy of a full build page but I'll post up some of the upgrades here if anyone is interested?  Cheers guys!
    • End game is to: - Remove all the slop from old worn parts - Adjust setup so that the wheels actually fit and the car is drivable (currently it is not because of the extreme rubbing on the guards).   Progress over the last couple of days, removed the rear hubs! Next steps: - Buy bushings - Replace bushings/bearings on hub - Reinstall
    • Cracked deck  And other cam snap stuff
    • A few random issues have popped up since my last update. My WMI pressure sensor failed within about 10 minutes of it seeing liquid. It was a 20$ China special, so I'm not surprised. My name brand replacement should arrive today.  My power steering assist also decided to crap out last weekend. The usual, works for about 60 seconds after starting the car then I lose it. I dusted off my old copy of NDS and connected to the HICAS ECU. Code 4 for assist solenoid.... I tested the solenoid and it's fine.  I knew the day where my HICAS ecu would crap out would come, and I welcome it. It was the last HICAS part on the car that is now in the bin. I've ordered an SSR and I will control the power steering solenoid with my Haltech ecu. It will be nice to have proper speed referenced assist again after all these years.
