My only concern its that my fans will turn off when the Haltech turns off.

They will. If you want them to run after engine shut down. You'll need a Timer kit to keep them on once a falling voltage from the ignition is detected (ie ignition off).

I don't see the point in this set up. Why not leave it just temp related. If you have enough airflow it will be cool enough and the fans wont come on anyway. How about if your tailing a car above 60 and getting no airflow....it will just overheat

The idea is that once above 60km/hr (or 70, or 80 - you choose), you already have more air flow than the fans can supply. Admittedly yes, the fan will create a low pressure side, but really it isn't necessary in my experience at least.

If you are belting it around the circuit, constantly turning 5000-7500rpm it can sit happily at 90 degrees even if the fan IS on. Having it on is not really helping, just pointlessly drawing 30 amps and putting extra load on the alternator.

Admittedly my car is less street, more track oriented.

I have not really noticed any dramas in traffic or following other cars at 60km/hr - but then I don't follow so close for it to be a problem.

Personally I think if you are going to have a fan running at full bore while doing 100km/hr then I think that setup is pointless - stick with the viscous.

But each to their own.

Doesn't matter a lot. Your water pump also happens to stop pumping when the Haltech Turns off... A little convection happens, but not a real advantage to cool the radiator when the water isn't being pumped around.

Well I don't think there is much advantage with the pump not running. Different if you have an electric water pump.. But I could be wrong and perhaps there is a lot more convection that I think, someone more knowlegable on that might be able to chime in.

Nope and that's why I have them go off when I get above 60km/hr.. but they don't come on until I am going under 40km/hr.. they are not going on/off/on at 59-61km/hr...

Plus stop and think about it. You are on the track (or anywhere for that matter) and come to a slow hairpin bend. You've just come off a straight and your temp is 85 degrees. For the 3 - 5 seconds you are in the hairpin at 45 km/hr and no fan, do you think your temp is going to race to 100 degrees? Not likely is it...

I run my car with the setup I mentioned in my first post - I wasn't giving you theory - and it works fine for me. But setups are different

The easiest thing for you to do is simply try it. Its only a software/programming change in the ECU, we're not talking about the choice between two different turbos. Give it a go and see what works.

In case anyone is interested my r33 was having overheating troubles and i thought it was my hub so i filled it up with silicon oil (bought from toyota) which makes it come on a bit earlier and keeps it on higher in the rev range. While my car was on the dyno trying to find out why it was 25kw down on power the operator suggested it may be my hub that sounds like its always on. Swapped it over to a non modified one and it made a whole 2rwkw extra! I'm happy to have the extra airflow minus 2kw!!

If you're going around a hairpin is the car really getting the air it needs while the are fans off? I'm glad it works for you but I'll probably have them completely controlled via temp and Haltech. I may try your setup at one point or another, thanks.

Seems abit 50/50 reading on the goods and bads of both parties reading through the pages.

Ive been thinking to upgrade my radiator to something new on my 94 R32 GTR. my radiator is fine right now and so is my standard fan but the car is 18 yrs old and been thinking about just having new gear on the car before i go the occasional trackday / powercruise.

Any suggestions to help me out abit more greatly appreciated.. thanks heaps.

I have the same fans / shroud, although my car is still not put together. I will be using them with a new alloy radiator and an electric water pump (I have welded a plate onto the standard water pump, removing all the guts of it). I will also use a digital controller that will monitor temps and adjust the water pump speed and fan speed to reach the target temp. It also can be set to run for a couple minutes after the car is turned off.

Hopefully it will all work well! Quality on the fans / shroud seems pretty good.

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
