+1 to buying a car with basic mods

When I bought my 32 is came with coilovers, fmic, catback, gtr bonnet/grill.

That's stuff I didn't have to spend money on which left more cash for RB30DET, RB25t gearbox, 2-way diff, big brakes etc etc.

Also did the same with the Stag I just got, the guy had blown heaps of money getting C-Red to put in coilovers, fmic, full exhaust, haltech, hiflow turbo etc.

id prefer stock, even tho itl cost more in the long run, id just like the satisfaction of buying and geting it all done myself:)

So you're going to pay someone to install all the shit you want? hope you have a large bank balance as chqbook racing is $_$. If that's the way you want to go about it (i.e. NOT doing the work yourself), then do the smart thing and save yourself some money by getting an already mildly modded car. Labour is a killer.

I'm always in two minds about this. Some modded cars work out being cheaper, but then again if the work has been done badly it can be costly down the track. I know a mate that bought a car with a fully rebuilt sr20 think it was putting out about 280hp atw. Long story short a couple months down the track the piston rings shit themselves.

I bought what is an almost completely stock car, just exhaust and turbo timer. But I intend on keeping it mostly that way, generally because it is mainly a daily car that occasionally sees some track time. Also because im a uni student so i dont have incredibly deep pockets. If you buy a car that is already modded and putting out huge power you need to have the pockets to finance any repairs and maintenance on a car like that.

On a side note, basic things like coilovers, exhaust etc are always a bonus but I wouldnt pay too much for them because if you need to rebuild the coilovers or something it's gonna cost alot.

Look for a car that has been rebuilt with lots of goodies some poor bastard wasted all there money on. Don't bother with a stock example, you'll end up being that poor bastard too.

It was more these posts i was responding to. Not so much your own Bubba. Plus it was more a general observation anyway, not really digging at what anyone else has said.

That can be a draw back with rebuilt engines, you never know how well they did it. Thats why checking where it was rebuilt can eliminate the chances of that.

your not going to see as many r33 gtsts around dealers as you used to going forward . the exchange rate makes them less attractive to import now and belieive it or not ive started to see prices for really nice ones going up in japan at auction recently . this is the same thing that happened to r32s a while ago , less and less really really good examples will mean higher prices in the long term

as an example 17k for a 95 for 120k on the clock ! and thats landed and complied , add more for rego inspection , demod for licensing etc etc etc

does have some nice goodies and everyone loves nismo red

    • Hi all,   long time listener, first time caller   i was wondering if anyone can help me identify a transistor on the climate control unit board that decided to fry itself   I've circled it in the attached photo   any help would be appreciated
    • I mean, I got two VASS engineers to refuse to cert my own coilovers stating those very laws. Appendix B makes it pretty clear what it considers 'Variable Suspension' to be. In my lived experience they can't certify something that isn't actually in the list as something that requires certification. In the VASS engineering checklist they have to complete (LS3/NCOP11) and sign on there is nothing there. All the references inside NCOP11 state that if it's variable by the driver that height needs to maintain 100mm while the car is in motion. It states the car is lowered lowering blocks and other types of things are acceptable. Dialling out a shock is about as 'user adjustable' as changing any other suspension component lol. I wanted to have it signed off to dissuade HWP and RWC testers to state the suspension is legal to avoid having this discussion with them. The real problem is that Police and RWC/Pink/Blue slip people will say it needs engineering, and the engineers will state it doesn't need engineering. It is hugely irritating when aforementioned people get all "i know the rules mate feck off" when they don't, and the actual engineers are pleasant as all hell and do know the rules. Cars failing RWC for things that aren't listed in the RWC requirements is another thing here entirely!
    • I don't. I mean, mine's not a GTR, but it is a 32 with a lot of GTR stuff on it. But regardless, I typically buy from local suppliers. Getting stuff from Japan is seldom worth the pain. Buying from RHDJapan usually ends up in the final total of your basket being about double what you thought it would be, after all the bullshit fees and such are added on.
    • The hydrocarbon component of E10 can be shittier, and is in fact, shittier, than that used in normal 91RON fuel. That's because the octane boost provided by the ethanol allows them to use stuff that doesn't make the grade without the help. The 1c/L saving typically available on E10 is going to be massively overridden by the increased consumption caused by the ethanol and the crappier HC (ie the HCs will be less dense, meaning that there will definitely be less energy per unit volume than for more dense HCs). That is one of the reasons why P98 will return better fuel consumption than 91 does, even with the ignition timing completely fixed. There is more energy per unit volume because the HCs used in 98 are higher density than in the lawnmower fuel.
    • No, I'd suggest that that is the checklist for pneumatic/hydraulic adjustable systems. I would say, based on my years of reading and complying with Australian Standards and similar regulations, that the narrow interpretation of Clause 3.2 b would be the preferred/expected/intended one, by the author, and those using the standard. Wishful thinking need not apply.
