Ash, do you know off the top of your head what the results of that test was. I was half thinking about pulling mine off my Nismo's. Are they just there to cause turbulance for the sensor? It wouldnt hurt to get rid of the metal in the AFM's i would think?
Whether it is related or not I do not know, but in a wind tunnel they use mesh to "condition" the airflow. They also use honeycomb to a similar effect.

I know Paul (DirtGarage) pulled out his mesh long ago when he still had the stock turbos

Be there was a quantifiable gain or not though im not sure.

And ye, you'd think the mesh was there for just dust/bits of poop... but if there is a purpose in a wind tunnel maybe there is more too it?

if you read this article, you'll be down in the garage with a screwdriver to remove the mesh within hours..

I asked in another topic but no replies so I'll ask you instead it must be fresh in your mind..

do you feel any real boost in 2nd or 3rd gear? or does it really need 4500 in 4th or higher, to hit 1 bar?

Yeah, you definitely do feel boost in the lower gears post 4k. If you're taking off you have already broken the 60kmh speed limit by the time you shift to 2nd anyway. I have never gone 4.5k+ in 4th gear, as I don't want my car to be impounded :domokun:
