+ 1 to the shock and spring combo! i use KYB shocks with whiteline "low" springs. resonably comphy ride but still stiff enough to give a nice feel to the car. altho you wont be able to do that for a few hundred $$ lol...unless you someone manage to find them all 2nd hand maybe.

fair enough, just to clarify, we have coilovers standard, so they cant be illegal. the illegal part is height adjustment, now what ive been told is that what clarifies as height adjustment is when the height can be altered without adding or subtracting parts from the suspension, although id imagine the interpretation would extend to not being able to adjust the height without pulling them apart.

im going to try and get through with my combo (bilstein/eibach), we'll see how it goes, ill be slipping a non threaded seat on top of the threaded sleeve, this will make it technically legal as u would have to pull the suspension apart and take parts out to adjust the height, even though theres a adjustable sleeve on it, its useless.

imho i dont think 8kg front and 6kg rear are too stiff

i could possibly go a wee bit lower maybe 7-5 you never know

but yeah harsh spring rates could actually casue you to loose grip

8kg and 6kg is probably the highest you want to go on a strret car! i personally reckon that is already a rough ride and my coil overs are progressive spring rates

Damo's right bud. If you speak to suspension gurus like SydneyKid etc, they'll steer you towards 5kg or 6kg fronts and 4kg or 5kg rears with aftermarket adjustable sway bars for track work.

Your tyres are already going to give you a harsh ride due to the profile. Even on the track, the whole idea is to stop the body roll hence the bigger (adjustable) sway bars. The Japs love to put 8 to 12 kg springs on their cars which is fine if you have the glass tracks of Tsukuba etc......problem is, our tracks aren't the best in the world and hitting a slight ripple in the bitumen on a bend or whilst braking at the end of a long straight may see you come unstuck.

I was actually having a similar conversation with Andrew (Blue32) at my place on the weekend where people spend huge money on big dyno numbers to go faster around Malalla yet a properly setup Porsche with alot less power can still embarras some Skylines........even having the biggest brakes on the track would be next to useless if there's no rubber making contact with the black stuff.

EDIT: If you ever get a chance, place a Bilstein shock alongside a well know Jap shock and have a look at the difference in valve bodies.....you'll be surprised at how good the European stuff is.

Another thing that I fail to understand, Bilstein have 9 degrees of adjustment as opposed to some manufactures that offer 16 or even 32......what are you (the average guy) gonna do with 32 settings?.......can you really tell the difference between setting number 23 & 24, LOL?!

ey mate just to let you kno. bring the ADR papers that are posted on a thread here with you to regency. if you read them, nowhere in there does it say that coil overs, adjustable or not, are illegal. Therefore you can leagally have them, ive heard its just a unwritten law at regency that you cant. If they do say something, be polite:D and tell them that no where in the ADR papers does it have that coil overs are illegal, and then just ask for some written legislation somewhere if they persist. My mates have gotten through wid adjustable ones heaps of times. Just make sure the height is legal and you'll be right with the suspension. Just dont hold me to it but defiantely read those ADR papers ive read em a couple of times and cant find anything anywhere

the ADR form in the defected thread leaves a lot of stuff out, which might get u out of a defect from a police officer, but the regency guys know their shit. what i said was what i was told from regency.

ok but out of curiosity ask em for the actual legislation, the actual paper work. because as i said some of my mates have gotten through regency.

    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
    • You don't have an R34 service manual for the body do you? Have found plenty for the engine and drivetrain but nothing else
    • If they can dyno them, get them dyno'd, make sure they're not leaking, and if they look okay on the dyno and are performing relatively well, put them in the car.   If they're leaking oil etc, and you feel so inclined, open them up yourself and see what you can do to fix it. The main thing you're trying to do is replace the parts that perish, like seals. You're not attempting to change the valving. You might even be able to find somewhere that has the Tein parts/rebuild kit if you dig hard.
