Hey guys

I am currently in the process of rebuilding my Rb20. I unfortunatly had my bottom end bearings give way (typical RB problem). I have decided that rather than pull it a part and just replace the bearings I am doing a full rebuild that way I don't have to pull the engine down a second time. I am boreing it out to 2.2L and replacing stock parts with the following:

The block is haveing everything done to it crack testing, crank balanced .........so on and so on

CP - Forged pistons and rings

SPOOL - rods

ACL Race- main bearings

ACL Race- big end bearings

HKS COMETIC - steel head gasket

The main thing for me is reliability as it will be my daily driver.I am putting in the head draining pipe back to the sump. I have also got my hands on T04E T3/T4 turbo which will be going on to the low mount as well (just fits). My goal is to run a comfortable 12 second pass without maxing out anything on/in the engine.

So after this my biggest concern will be fuel. I am looking at an intank walbro fuel pump and adjustable fuel regulator as well as larger 550cc injectors. Has anyone got a set of injectors that will do the job. I have been told that RX7 series 4 injectors are a straight upgrade. The block is nearly complete and should be done within this month... (waiting on parts to arrive)

So if anyone has any advise for me please let me know HOWEVER!!!! I don't want to hear anything about why didn't you just bolt in an RB25 or 26. I have had an Rb25 and preffer the RB20 so please keep this thread on the point , All help will be appreciated. cheers Nic

Hey mate - good on ya on keeping the 20! very underrated.

I have not heard the best things about Walbro pumps - I have never used one, just heard not so good.

Would suggest a Bosch one - these seem tried and tested 040 or 044

Also if you've gone through the effort of a full rebuild I would get new injectors for piece of mind, or you can get RX7 ones I think they are 440cc though not 550? If you do go second hand make sure you get them cleaned and flow tested.

Anyways good luck! Just make sure you service it regulalry and don't drive it like an idiot and she'll live forever.

surge tank and single O44 is what I have in mine.

and its able to handle up to around 25psi with my 1000cc injectors also you will need a good fuel reg.

Going to be running some decent boost for a 12 second quarter. Go some 550cc injectors. Dont skimp on these as obviously a bad set of these will make u r motor go boom.

Hey mate. Nice to see you sticking with the 20 motor. The fuel system you have mentioned will be ampule. The only thing i wouldn't do, would be to put the 550cc injectors out of a rx7. In my experience with them, they aren't designed for a piston motor, as they poor the fuel in when the milliseconds are decreased for cruzing applications. Just what i've been told by a few tuners. Had a set in mine and went through spark plugs like no tomorrow. What management you going to use?

  • 4 weeks later...

Update, Hey guys well all paid for waiting on parts to arrive. I ended up going through Mercury Motor Sports for the parts, Trent was pretty good to talk to and was fair when it came to price. So once the parts arrive and the engineers finish their side of things here in Bundaberg it looks like it's going down to Brisbane to Mercury to have a Vipec ECU fitted and tuned, as well as a I'll get them to look at the fuel system and see what they think... So hopefully it will all turn out well. Thanks for the advice guys your opinions are appreciated

    • Unsolicited advice? Keep the engine as close to stock as you can. Nothing wrong with adding some boost and making a little more power, but given where you are, you really don't want to try to make it into a monster. I can't imagine the roads are up to it, and the lack of locla support when it grenades will be a ball ache. FWIW, If there is a dyno around that you can access, then brand new injectors are a good idea, which will lead you to (at least) putting a Nistune in it, which will allow you to put an R35 AFM on it, all of which will make it possible to make it much much nicer to drive and live with.
    • List all of your mods. It sounds like an aftermarket ECU hitting rev limiter. Like a valet mode, or a cold rpm limiter?
    • @Kapr Haha yeah thats the one. I missed that you had a built up engine, I wouldn't want to run it on there either then. It was good in my situation just to replace the original turbo on a stock engine. @MBS206Yep definitely not a replacement for anything name brand
    • You are selling this? I have never bought something from marketplace...i dont know if i trust that enough. And the price is little bit "too" good...
