Hey - I too am looking to head down as a spectator Thurs and Fri.

What is the deal with spectating at the event? Recognising the road closures, do you simply drive out on the course and stake out a spot prior to the closure?

If we are staying in Launceston do we need a rental car to access the good viewing points?

What are the top viewing points on those days? Going with my old man who lives overseas so both a scenic and exciting spot is what I am after.

Thanks

Hey mate you will definately need a mode of transport, there are designated spectator points on each stage which are listed on the targa site.

Rent an Xtrail or any car really, Thursday, get up early drive to the top of Sideling - weather can be anything, pissing down, fog or sunshine. Or all of the above over a two hour period. Take a couple of chairs and a thermos. See the cars for about 700mtrs thru a range of corners and accelerating to top gear. Good spot and you will be able to pick the good from the bad easy.

It is worth the trip to hear the two lambos at full flight. (Not heard R35, but tipping that will be special too).

Tell your old man to sit down shut up and hang on, then bast cross country to get in on Rossarden in the afternoon, or slowly head back toward lonnny for the soft Longford stage with 5000 locals.

Friday - Dunorlan - you are a fair way from the action, then there are a couple of places you can get onto Paloona. From there cross country to the start of Liena (most scenic easy access point with up close and distance views.)

The other option is to pic a stage, drive in before the road closes, park on a forestry trail off the road so the road close team can tape off in front of your car (and away from line of site for the drivers)

But by doing this you are there for the full road closure... there are quite a few points to be accessed this way. In 93 I dove onto Elephant pass walked about 2ks and managed to watch the cars on a flat out open stretch with multi corners.

Get elevated, and have a safe enjoyable trip. You'll love it

TT

Crikey first post on here in a long time.

Anyway I will be cheering on MY navigator (yeh you hear that Woo?? He's mine haha) and Benny in the mighty dirty two in Targa Launceston.

Will hopefully make it to Grasstree Hill as usual or the new Warrane town stage might be worth a look for some opposite lock. Will definitely be at the after party though

No Warrane town stage (thank god), got the can.

Looks like Targa West winner Steven Jones is coming down in his GTR

I'd heard he was trying to run in the Mini Challenge this year as well but I haven't been able to find an entry list for the GP yet to see if he got there or not. But Steve is good value - mildy insane but always entertaining :/

And handy with a spanner should you blow a front diff!

Always was :D

Spoke to Glenney the other day, he's pumped! :P

Giant finally has a new nav organised, I reckon I'll be permanently out of a seat there!

Your a driver mate, better you stick to that side of the car.

I interestingly added up all the entry fees over the weekend... yikes!

lol.... I would stay there if the bloody budget allowed! Need to find a chick with rich parents.....

So anyway, car went well at the shakedown at Lakeside saturday, PISSED though, some w*nkaer in a V8 Escort totally showered the car with rocks in an appalling display of driving. Hundreds of serious chips all over the front of the car right through the gelcoat, dented brand new intercooler and radiator, broken windscreen.

So she looks like a racer now, but she still feels nice

Now that sucks - those first chips are always the worst but would be especially tough to cop if they are from someone being a d*ck.

Sounds like you still had a good day out though.

    • Put a fuel pressure gauge on it. Replace the turbos. Probably completely separate issues.
    • What copper washer do you guys use on the bleeder bolts? The existing one I have I had no idea where to find it in a local store, I did buy some online but that are only 1mm thick whereas my old one is 2mm+ thick and when I put the new washer out and squeeze the top radiator hose I can hear a bit of air but not with the old one. Does this matter? The new one doesn't leak, but the inner diameter is a bit loose whereas the old one threads on the bolt.
    • Howdy all, after being out a few weeks ago on a spirited drive in my GTR I have 2 issues that oddly have appeared at the same time. Whilst accelerating quickly through the gears all of a sudden i’ve lost power at the top of third gear (below redline around 6000rpm) for no obvious reason.    From that point onwards the car has been running rich on idle, won’t really rev under load without a ton of black smoke and the odd backfire, and dying as a pull up to a set of lights unless I keep the revs up around 1500rpm. In addition when shutting down the car that same night (I was 10 minutes from home) I noticed one of the turbos was significantly noisy on wind down when shutting off the engine. After letting the car cool down overnight it starts up fine, although once it gets to temp the revs start to creep up and down, the exhaust is darker than it should be and it also sounds like it’s running rich (fat note) I’ve put a new set of plugs in it - no change, the old plugs all seemed OK with two of them being somewhat richer/fueled up than the other 3 with 1 being borderline. I’ve smoked tested the intake system via the front of the Turbos, found a split vacuum hose going to the factory boost gauge sender, which I have since replaced.  Also found another leak on the gasket coming off the rear turbo outlet, have also replaced this. After fixing both of these leaks - still have the running rich issue. I’ve also tried another pair of AFM’s - no change here After pulling off the front turbo intake pipes, there is obvious shaft play in the front turbo, which now hisses loudly on light revvs although I can’t see why this would make the car run funny even under idle. I’m curious to know why it’s running rich before I potentially replace/rebuild turbos. The car is completely stock <50,000kms  other than an exhaust. Oil and coolant are all clear. I haven’t bothered with coil packs as it looks like they won’t be the issue due to condition of the plugs. Any help appreciated as I cry myself to sleep!
    • No probs at all. I used to love trying to dig up obscure info for those in need where possible going back 20+ years on SAU.  I did have another look and couldn't come up with any closer match. I'm leaning towards those skirts in your first pic are custom fitments, cut down/extended or from another car entirely and modded to fit an R34 sedan. I would've thought someone in Japan had them and taken a photo at some stage over the last 2 decades but there's nothing. Someone out there must know surely.
