Just looking for some advice on which direction to head in.

If i want it i could have a RB30 bottom end with turbo pistons for pretty much nothing, every one ive spoken too keeps telling me to do the RB30 swap and have X amount of power and be happy as larry.

OR

Keep the RB20 and go for my goal of 200kw with supporting mods with the likes of a high-flowed r33 or r34 turbo.

Car is a 93 GTST with 3inc turbo back exhuast FMIC spiltfire coilpacks.

Want to use the car as a good street car that can handle its self at the track and teach me how to drive.

any advice would be appreciated.

Money is no real issue i would rather wait and have the money to do things right either it be RB20 or 30 rather then just diving in.

Most the work could be done ourselves mate owns his own workshop and knows his way around performance engines.

If money is no issue....mod the RB20 to your 200kw. Drive it around until the RB2630 is built up and then bang that in there :P

+1. Take your time and do the 30 properly. With money being no object, there's a lot that you can pour into it that will squeeze the scrote once fitted, as you'll soon get used to the power of the 20 and want more.

Thus is the trap with performance cars - The money pit factor.

I have had both in a 32 and can give you some info from both sides.

RB20 - really easy yo get 200rwkw out of. exhaust, turbo, intercooler, boost controller and fuel pump and ecu remap. thats all you need. if you go with a good turbo like a 2530 power delivery will be excellent, it will rev like buggary and it will last. it will bore you after a while and you will be on an endless chase for more power.

having said this is is an excellent powertrain for a rwd 32. and driven properly will be a VERY fast street car.

RB30 - now you will have to replace a lot of things you didnt with the rb20.

gearbox, clutch, engine mounts, injectors, afm, ecu, fuel pump, turbo, exhaust, intercooler, boost controller plus the build itself. the car will have more torque than you will ever need, stupid amounts of torque. if you are doing 80 in 5th and mash the throttle it will pull like an RB20 in 3rd. it makes effortless power, sounds cool, is SHITLOADS OF FUN TO DRIVE but probably will not be faster than the 20det powered 32 unless you are a very skilled driver. an most of the time you are trying to get the power down.

it will cost 4 times what a 20det would and you will have a ball in it, but the is NOTHING wrong with the good ole 20det :(

Everything CEFFIE says is true.

Personally, putting a 3L in my 32gtst was the best thing I ever did. Yes, there were pitfalls and yes, it did cost more than I originally planned (but that could be said for most things performance oriented).

I love it and would never think of going back to a 2L!

Well I think I may be able to shed some light...

CEF11E tuned my car and we made just a shade under 200rwkw at just under 1 Bar on my 20DET.

I've been in his RB30 and it pumps, however, as he said its really only as good as the driver and you will need to do the other stuff to support the 30.

My 20 is my daily and will hold its own with pretty much anything apart from the exotics, despite what some might say it is also quite responsive. So for the time being I reackon learn the 20, take it to the track and enjoy it - I guarantee it will not dissapoint and then when your ready to upgrade do the 30

    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻   
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
