I own a 1998 R33 Skyline 40th Anniversary model which has stock suspension. I love the car but most of my driving is on rural roads which are rough and the cars ride is a bit harsh particularly over patchwork repairs on the road.

I want to get a more compliant ride from the car. It has been suggested to me that I don't put coil overs on the car but retain the standard spring and put better quality shocks on the car.

I have been thinking about KYB adjustible dampers but don't want to fork out a whole lot of money then find that I don't get the result I am looking for.

If you can give me some suggestions or recommed a good suspension person it would be appreciated.

I thought it would be good to get some Skyline owners experiences before I commit to udgrading my suspension.

Thanks,

Brian

Bilsteins FTW!

Did a search in here and couldn't find one bad thing about them, so I decided to send my share of K Rudd's stimulus to Germany in exchange for a front pair. First thing I noticed was how the front just holds still (kinda hard to explain) and MUCH better ride even with the same springs compared to my old Nismo adjustables on ANY setting.

Takes speed bumps really well too. You'd be surprised how much discomfort is caused by the actual bouncing up over and down from the bump as opposed to just absorbing it.

Go Bilsteins. Adjustable shocks, apart from Konis, are a waste of time because the adjustment is not accurate between the shocks so you'll end up with one side stiffer than the other for the same number of clicks on the adjuster. Guaranteed.

Sorry to hi-jack your thread but didn't wanna make a new thread with the same subject.

Does anyone know the KYB part number for r33 gts-t '96? I've been looking in their US and AUS catalog but cant find it, or is there another nissan car that have the same part number as skyline? I'm really lost, cant find the part number anywhere, I've even tried their JP website but that wasn't much help.

Thanks in advance for the input.

I can't say from first hand experience, but everything I've heard is that KYB shocks are the way to go.

they are a bit meh, koni yellows are a step up and bilsteins are another step up from that.

street car= bilstein + good springs IMO

and this is only the beginning to the the issues associated with cheap adjustable shocks lol

I'll be the first to say I thoroughly enjoyed the last thread about that! :/ Some absolute classic quotes!!! :)

Sticking to the 'known' brands (not so much specialised Japanese stuff), the price/performance index roughly goes:

- KYB

- Koni

- Bilstein

- DMS

It's a matter of how much money you've got as to how far up the list you go.

Jetpilot1986: to clarify - down that list is up in price/performance !

Bilsteins for R33 ~1100 a set (+springs) vs DMA coilovers ~3300 (50mm). I have bilsteins and they impress all who enter. you might actually cop some flack from your fully sick mates with coilovers. But when their rock hard car with 40rwkw more and 100kg less goes 3 seconds slower a lap with better tyres you've really got to wonder

Hey guys, am in similar situation. 96 R33 GTS-T. Looking for some nice smooth feeling shocks. If I go with the Bilsteins, should I stick with the stock springs or get new ones? I want a nice smooth ride but not too rocky around corners. I was going to get some Tein SS Coilovers with those EDFC things because it sounded cool but I figure if I can get a nicer feel for less, that'd be the best way to go. I'm a fairly "Spirited" driver but not interested in drifting or sliding.

I'd Like to keep it between 1-2k

Cheers

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
