Girlfiends little mirage is using heaps of oil? normally holds around 3.3ltrs but the last 2 services ive done on it ive only taken out about 1.5ltrs?? A coulpe of times ive had to give it a massive top up because the engine light has come on. Took the plugs out on the weekend and they where all fouled with burnt oil and gunk.

i service it every 5000km started with 10w-40 oil but moved up to 15w-40 becuase of the oil loss.

Car has done around 170000kms

Any ideas on why this keeps happerning any help would be great

Thanks.

I've noticed the same thing with the GF's Corolla, 10 or so years old, 140000km and burns oil like no tomorrow! pretty sure that one has 20w50 (albeit cheap shit united brand oil lol), not sure about when it had a proper service last, it blows a heap of white oily smelling smoke on cold start then is fine as far as I can tell. Surely plugs wouldn't make that much of a dramatic difference?

It really depends on how it was serviced in its life. Heck my corolla is now knocking on 300000 km with original engine. Just done a new water pump ( old one started leaking - Bastard to replace ) and a timing belt for good measure. Thing only uses a litre every 5000 + kms and not all of that is getting past the rings. Crank seal is leaking . Yet some pretty new cars you see these days are churning out Blue smoke when the car is less than 5 years old.

    • Despite the level up question, actually I do know what that is....it is a pressure sender wire.  So check out around the oil filter for an oil pressure sender, or maybe fuel pressure near the filter or on the engine. Possibly but less likely coolant pressure sensor because they tend to be combined temp/pressure senders if you have one. Could also be brake pressure (in a brake line somewhere pre ABS) but maybe I'm the only one that has that on a skyline.
    • Pull codes via the self-diagnosis procedure. As far as I can tell this is just a sign of transmission issues but not a code unto itself.
    • Hi All, putting the engine back together and everything is perfect except have this plug left over.. any ideas what it is for and where it goes? Is on cold side under the intake plenum *note not a stock plug, as everything has been modified Cheers
    • Sounds like a misfire. Check fuel pressure and don't even think about going into boost while it's like this unless you enjoy engine rebuilds.
