Care to elaborate on that thought?

not interested in wasting my time.

better if we wait for engo to give us feedback on how different the car is from a owners point of view who has had both ecu's. that will be best.

You wasted your time typing the post in the first place, so why not explain why Microtech's are not suited to RB engines?

And Engo's feedback will not tell you anything because he probably never got it tuned by someone who knows microtech and will probably take it to someone who does know how to tune PowerFC.

I'd direct you to a couple of R33's running Microtech and an RB25 Silvia that does pretty well....and the Silvia runs an LT10S, not a 12. Still does it's job very well. It all comes down to the tuner. But you probably don't want to waste your time learning something new anyway.

I have owned a car for years with a microtech, i have tuned many of them on SR's CA's RB's FJ's Toyota's etc etc. Getting them right is simple, especially with WOT tables which makes tuning for power very easy.

Its all the other stuff like every day drivablity that they lack. They also seem to go out of tune every 3 - 6 months from what I have seen. They dribble like no tomorrow and don't get me started on the microtech stumble they all seem to suffer with.

Go to anyones place who owns a microtech car and look in the garage. You will see big black patches of fuel spots on the ground, its funny I randomly see these patch's everywhere, even in public car parks.

For a car thats gets driven on the drag strip or drifting they are a good match. but for a RB powered daily driven street car they are not suitable.

They don't stumble unless there is another part of the system that has a hiccup and they don't lose their tune every 3-6 months. Talk to Matt Spry, Peter from Pro-Torque, BPS etc. If you take your car to a decent tuner who knows the system well, then you shoulnd't have any problems. They are simple, yes, but if you don't know them well, they are even simpler - and the results will speak for themselves. That runs true for any EFI management system. Of all the RB's running Microtech's that I know of, none of them share the symptoms you speak of.

There was a couple of instances where the Microtech lost some data a while back in their earlier days but it's not every unit that does it. You could hang shit on Haltech for their crappy MAP sensor too but just because a couple of people have issues doesn't mean the product is a bad one.

I prefer not to use Microtech on RB's but when a customer brings me his/her car with Microtech in hand, I don't judge them or their product, I choose to make it work. Engo has started out with a Microtech, and probably due to the bad words from forum users, he has ditched it when all he really needs is to have a decent tuner.

PowerFC have the well known miss also but I know some tuners who can prevent that from happening. Then on the other side, sometimes it's the owners hardware at fault too.

Ye i know hehe - i should have quoted the first post where he says WOT and outright power is all that he's worried about, and in the same line he talks about Wolf equipped cars throwing pistsons... which again is more rubbish and dribble :)

i actually think you are an outright top bloke.... good on ya ash :) ...

imo ya cant be to cautious.. and this site is for research and ect... and everyone helps out fine which is awsome.... but ash... nahhh.. just has to add his pointless 2 cents :D

One has to agree with this statement. Check his posts.....the guy spends most of his time hangin shit on everyone, tryin to find faults and the worst part is, hes a Mod. lead by example hey.....fear the admin power....what a joke :woot:

How bout the admins show some damn respect. Its the people that keep this forum alive not the forum moderater nazis.

Pisses me off when I read through the forum and see this shit goin on. All engo wanted was some help, not to be belittled by some joker who should be the first to try and help, no matter what.

Here's a suggestion and an idea all in one for you mister R31Hemroid, why dont you grow up and try being nice to people for a change!

i loled at this last page

3lit3_32, have you ever gotten a Microtech to co-operate with a GT-R or other 4wd Skyline?

Mine was tuned by a big name tuner in Sydney, yet like another guy I knew with a EL straight 6 running a LT-8 vs my LT10S and tuned locally, they both don't want to cold start first go, they both need plugs changed all the time, and generally run overly rich and spit out fuel vapour as well as lots of smoke. Not to mention occasionally wanting to not rev properly when idling for a while.

Thats 2 different cars with the only similarity being the brand of ECU with a local tuner and a big name city tuner doing the tunes on both, one being a N/A and the other a turbo. Seems to be more than a coincidence to me, hence I pin the blame on the ECU - I don't really want to pay say $600 to get the tune fixed up then to find in 6 months or earlier that it's returned to its original state.

I figure if one of the better known names in Sydney tuning can't get the bloody thing to behave, who can!

I say this because I'm also looking at the PowerFC option, though I'm leaning more towards getting a Z32, using the RB20 ECU I have and getting a Nistune board put on it.

hmmmm.... well ill be able to tell the difference soon... my old microtech was tuned well.. but yes cold start was a bitch..used to hold my foot on the accell until warm... idle was bullshit..had to remove my BOV and block up the vac line to bring the idle up to 800rpm..... i used to rev it somtimes and black balls of fuel would fly out the exaust from being so rich and yes...the bastard dropps outta tune b4 ya know it.... but ifor a track car i could not think of much better :(

cannnot wait till pfc goes in... just scared cause i wanna tune it myself..oh god

Why aren't you "going to even bother" Guilt-Toy? I was merely sharing my own experiences of Microtech ECU's, and the fact of that matter is that I've yet to see a car in person which has one that does not have cold start and overfueling issues, and pointing out that the same issues were present on two different motors and tuned by both the top and bottom end of tuners. I can't see anything I've said that's particularly stupid or irrelevant there.

The question was also directed towards 3lit3_32 since he is valiantly defending an ECU which is known to be very unpopular around here, I was interested in seeing more of what he had to say in their defence.

    • My first car was a HG. I'm very familiar with them. A mild cam upgrade is a good idea. The 186 is a very flexible engine - meaning it has good torque from down low. You can give up a little torque down low for quite a lot more excitement in the mid range, and a bit more up top - but they are not exactly a rev monster. You need to upgrade valve springs at the minimum. For a bigger cam, you'd want to make sure it wasn't still running the original fibre cam gear. That would be unlikely, given that most of them shat themselves in the 70s and 80s, but still within the realms of possibility. Metal cam gear required. Carbies are a huge issue. The classic upgrade was always a Holley 350, which works, but is usually pretty bad for fuel consumption. The 186S had a 2 barrel Stromberg on it that was very similar to the one on the 253, and is a reasonable thing if you can find one, and find someone to help you get it set up (which is the same issue with setting up a 350 to work nice). The more classic upgrade was twin sidedraught CD type carbs, or triples of same, or triple Webers. The XU-1 triple Webers being the best example. You can still buy all this stuff new, I think, but it's a lot of coin to drop. And then the people able to set them up are getting fewer and further in between. There's still some, but it used to be everyone's** dad and uncle could do it. **Not everyone's! But a lot. All in all, I wouldn't get too carried away with the engine. Anything you do to it without a full rebuild for power and revs will only make it slightly faster. I am all in favour of a complete teardown rebuild, with nice rods and pistons, 10 or 10.5:1 compression, and a clean port job with at least a big enough cam to run 98 with that compression, if not bigger. And if I did that to a dirty old red motor, I'd want to inject it too, which I'd struggle to fight against the devil on my shoulder that would argue for ITBs and trumpets. But the bills would start to mount up, and it will still never make stupid power. OK, a few people still know how to build absolutely mental red motors, courtesy of the work that went into HQ racing and modern knowledge being applied. But even a 300HP red motor is no match for an RB20 with a TD06. So you have to decide what it's worth to you. I'd just put a set of 6>2>1 extractors, a 2.5" exhaust and an electronic ignition conversion/dizzy on it and just run the old girl like the fairly slow old girl that she really is.
    • Thank you so much for the comments.  This is very interesting and gives me some great ideas to think about. Keen to keep it simple and relatively classic looking. That said, i am not too worried about staying 100% period correct.  A little extra performance and relatively good (or improved) economy is just what i am looking for. Ill be keeping any parts i swap out so if i get nostalgic i can always swap it all back in.  Right now just trying to get some good ideas from people in the know (I still have a lot to learn in this space). Thank you again!
    • Wrt the engine, you're very much limited by 'production quality' as to how much extra power you can extract from them (I'm talking i6 red-motor) -- a lot here depends on how 'authentic' or 'period correct' you want the modifications to be... ...I'm too old... <grin>...the first true performance engine Holden made, was in the HD/HR models ~ this was the 'X2' performance pack...it came with twin downdraft strombergs on an otherwise unimproved intake manifold, with a two piece exhaust manifold (reckoned to be as good as extractors)... ....these engines were built upon the '179HP' cylinder block, which included extra webbing in the casting to make it stronger and less susceptible to block distortion... The next performance i6 came out with the HK Monaro (also found it's way into the LJ GTR Torana ... the car I wish I hadn't sold)...it had pretty much the same manifold setup, but was built against the '186S' block...this block retained all the extra webbing of the 179HP block, but added a forged steel crankshaft (instead of the stock cast crankshaft), because it was possible to snap the crank... ...apart from the inherent weaknesses in the stock (cast crank) blocks, the next limiting factor is the cylinder head porting & combustion chamber design, and the actual valve sizes. Back in the day, you could buy a 'yella terra' cylinder head (from stage 1 to stage 5 gradients), and this was the way to get serious power out of them -- with the extra breathing of these heads, you could fit a triple SU or DCOE Weber setup... ...obviously, these mods were a waste of time on a stock cylinder head/camshaft grind. My housemate rebuilt the i6 in his VH dunnydore about 6 months back -- this is a 186S block with the 12port 2850 blue motor head and intake/exhaust manifolds, with a dual throat Weber off an XF Falcon mounted on an adapter plate ; it's not a bad makeup...got more torque & fuel economy just light-footing it about on the first throat, but stand on it and it makes more giddy-up than the standard 2850 blue motor that it replaced. Personal note: I'd just fit an RB30 and be done it it 😃
    • Thanks for sharing. That's a great video! My buddy is doing the same thing on his build (S chassis struts and towers). He's building an S14 with billet RB30 shooting for 2000whp... a race car with a TH400 just like this video. For a road car I just couldn't go this route as the strut has to be almost vertical and the caster is not going to pivot correctly (let alone camber gain). You think the R32 frontend is bad, wait till you put a MacPherson strut on without modeling it all in Solidworks to check geometry. I'm not saying it's a bad way to do it but I'd be really curious to see how it affects the geometry.
    • Hey Christof and welcome!  Sounds like an awesome project! I'm not sure many of the regular users on here would know much about the HK but I could be wrong.  Looking forward to updates.
