Hey guys, I've been looking around at R34 GT-R's... which still isn't out of the picture however my cousin is a mechanic at a Sydney workshop.. I've been told by my cousin that the GT-4's are 4WD similar to the GT-R however still have the NEO Straight Six 2.5L... Now I've found a few for sale (They are quite rare) they obviously come non-turbo.. however I'm probably looking to do an engine transplant with a RB26DETT or an RB30DET.. Which will be fairly cost effective.. On tradingpost and carsales I've found a few in the 13-20k range..

I'm not looking to mimic and R34GTR or to pass a GT-4 as a GTR.. but has anyone ever considered this before? I'm thinking with the GT-R front end conversion etc.. It would look quite good and would end up costing me almost half of what a GT-R would? and the power can always be increased...

That's a good plan but unfortunately there is one problem, for the R34's the 25GT-FOUR is not eligible for import. IT has 100kW/ton whereas to be eligible it must have 105kW/ton ormore. The RWD 25GT non turbo just makes it in, but because of the extra weight of the 4WD system it pushes it below the limit required and the 25GT-FOUR can't be imported. There MIGHT be a handful of 25GT-FOURs in Australia that were imported many years ago under the old CPA import scheme, but I would doubt it.

I see, there is a few GT-Four's in aus atm.. but they are hella rare.. I heard someone imported a GT-4 4 Door a little bit ago? thru Iron Chef Imports :s

When I was approached about bringing one in for the first time a year or two ago, I actually thought the same thing, Ben - evidently DoTaRS doesn't mind. I've brought a few in since.

Yeah before I replied I double checked the SEVS list and they list it as being eligible and and the RB25DE as being 105kW/ton (so just ok), but when you do the actual math on the RB25DE in GT-FOUR guise then it's 100kW/ton and a no go. I think DOTARS own mistake in the paperwork must be letting it through... maybe we shouldn't be talking about it in case they see and decide to fix the problem :P

Yeah, I'd urge a bit of caution and I'd want to have a chat to a compliance workshop before to comitting eveyrthing, but it sounds like it might be alright.

In regards to your original idea then I don't see anything wrong with it. Keep in mind as well as just swapping the engine and putting a nice kit on it you'll probably want to upgrade the brakes since non turbo R34's had gaybo sliding caliper jobbies, the diff might not be an LSD (which you could live with but if you're going for big power you might want to change) and you might find it's much cheaper to buy an auto GT-FOUR in which case you'd need the gearbox, master cylinder and pedal box from a manual for the conversion also. If you're happy with the work involved and the expected costs I say go for it, there's no shame in owning an uber fast 4WD R34 that just happens to not be a GTR if you ask me! :P

I got one  Big thanks to the chef who got it for me, as i had no idea they existed until he showed me them. I got a manual one, and to be honest, i would be saving for a GTR. Im in the middle of doing the whole gtr bit. Already got GTR Brembo's and a Getrag arriving this week and still need to get a whole BNR34 rear subframe. Then there are little things which u need to replace, like master cylinders, fuel pumps etc

In the end i'll be pushing 400+kw's out of it, but im mainly doing it cause i want something different which no one has.

    • And I just realised that that advice is slightly nonsensical for a GTR, because you need 2 of them. But it is otherwise true.
    • Having had a reasonable look at the car, I'll be able to remove the (one time) rams and retract the hinge (they are held in the down location by a tiny (m3?) sacrificial screw) which will get it physically back in shape. From there if you remove the rams you need a resistor to turn off the airbag light (as Mark said, there are plug in kits and I might go that way because its reversible). And...per all the threads on here, even if you have the resistors to turn off the airbag light, the bonnet light will stay on as it writes to the airbag computer history - that is either replace the airbag controller, reprogam the EPROM (if I can work out how), or remove the globe from the dash. Having seen how sensitive this system is, if I had my time over I'd pre-emptively remove the rams, even on a road car, because this is all a very unnecessary pain in the arse. Reminds me, time to go and have a look at the Fuga too....
