p plate driver driving skyline gts-t

Recommended Posts

Guest WINfiEld

does anyone know if its legal for a p plate driver driving one? i know that the legal limit is 125kw per tone and the skyline is 134kw per tone base on the power output as 184kw and 1370kg. now i'm not sure if those specs are correct so feel free on correcting me. i also emailed vic roads on a list of cars that p plate drivers can't drive and the skyline gts-t doesn't appear on it, only the gtr. anyone know if the specs i put up above is correct? i use the specs from www.importdriver.com.au.

When you say "Northern" suburbs, which area do you acutally mean...

P platers can drive what ever the f.u.c.k they want as long as its not a twin turbo or v8. Thats the rules, dont worry about wieght/power ratio. Its never ever been used, and it doesnt stand up in court.

If any one knows, its me! hehe

why do u say If any one knows, its me!? do you work for vic roads or the police? i don't see why they would make the rules and not put them in practise. i rang up vic roads and i've also emailed them and everytime they say is this

All probationary driver licence holders are restricted from driving a high powered motor vehicle on a highway. A high powered motor vehicle is defined as a motor vehicle (not a motor cycle or motor trike) which:

has a power to mass ratio which exceeds 125 kilowatts per tonne;

or

has an engine capacity which exceeds 3.5 litres per tonne of the unladen mass of the motor vehicle.

It is the driver's responsibility to make sure any vehicle driven is not a high powered vehicle. If detected driving a high powered vehicle, the driver will be fined and the licence will be suspended.

to come to think of it, they say "high way." what is there definition of highway?

i've wanted to find out exactly the same thing for a while now.

I've phoned rta/vic roads/traffic unit all say conflicting things. I've asked exactly where the kw figure is measured from, my guess would be the flywheel - but none can give a definiate answer. Same deal with modifications made to the car, for example if turning the boost down on the turbo would mean that it is within the restriction is it legal? - again noone i've spoken to can answer. Not to mention when i rang vic roads to try and find out the answer to these questions and she was frustrated...because they dont even know the answers.

paul.

ps - you know how expensive insurance is?

Guest WINfiEld

yeah

i told vic roads that what if i reduce the boost. they said something about tampering with the cars emission. when i looked on the website they said theres a list of cars that are not available for p plate drivers to drive and got that list and asked vic roads again. they told me that that list doesn't exist anymore.

and for insurance i got an online quote from just cars. that was with me as a rating 5 driver and 4rd party insurance. it was $787 a year with a $850 excess and $450 for fire or theft with no cover on a stero.

i also think that vic roads should gather a list or something to help us in deciding what cars we can drive and not drive. becuase i tried using a number of sources to see if they have different weight or power outputs to make it legal. they also don't seem to know alot about there job.

well i don't know if u can drive a gtir but according to the list its not on it. only gtr is. well if its under the power weight ratio then i think you can. better check with vic roads.

heres the list of cars you can't drive according to vic roads.

btw mate hope u can drive the gtir because i was heart broken when i was told i couldn't. ;) i had worked very hard to save up the money to buy the car in the first place

yeah i thoguht of that but with just cars the calculate it from the yougest driver so it doesn't really matter whos name it is. yet again i could be wrong. won't hurt if you do it your way but just remember to have a car under your name so you can get some sort of rating in future.

Ok WINfIEld there you go winding me up...

Since i was little have been into very fast cars, not becuase they are fast, but becuase they all look so sexy. My first car was a 1991 GTO Twin Turbo...

Sure its illegal to drive one, and I can gurantee you that no one you know has been pulled over as many times as i have, damn it i was pulled over on on free way 3 times on the same night within 1 hour by 3 different cops. I ofcourse got a permit from Vicroads stating that i could drive this car on my p's. which is fine.

Now in regards to your "Power to Weight" Ratio that you so called got from Vic roads. Yeah sure the rule exists but it cant be legally carried out. The reason for this is the weight on your car.

Now on my R32 when i had it said Tare - 1600kgs and my mates said 1400kg and my other mates said 900 kgs!!! Now i want you to prove to me that my car actually weighs exactly - ???Kgs and my car at the moment currently has ??? kw. It is impossible. For australian cars, maybe. TOGs dont even carry books for this. However this rule does apply to any car equiped with a V8. Even if you drive a Ford Bronco wich weighs like 4000kgs (slight Exag..) you cant drive one on your p's. The police cannot legally fine or even suspend you (Now thats the funniest thing i have heard) for driving a turbo charged car on your P's cuase it wont legally stand up in court, unless they take you to a weigh bridge and a dyno in the same day. I know becuase it has been tried on me in court. Stating these facts, Infront of the judge, was enough for the judge to realise that i had a valid point, and then after the court case, the cop asked me " why didnt you say all that to me on the roads, i woulnd't have bloody fined you, now i look like a moron infront of the judge, You did well mate, good stuff" Yes a cop said that to me. So there you have it. The tare on your car is actually in correct, the Tare on your 045 inspection papers is actually incorrect. so you my friend have no idea how much your car weighs. And neither do the cops. And you or the cops can prove this. so its a mutal agreement.

And thats what happens when you fire me up!

Heheh I didnt mean it in a bad way Winfield...heheeh we're all friends here. What i meant is that i have actually been charged with this, well it didnt stand up, Oh plus my uncle works for the RTA....hehehe he told me what i need to know, Its for the nerds out there not to go out and buy sooped up cars and kill them selves. Of course if your driving a torana with a rb20det in it, its not standard, so engineers reports etc. but any standard car, is not an issue However they can get you for too low, too loud, too nice...etc.

I drove a 1.8L 180sx that did about 160-170rwkW and whenever I got pulled over they gave me trouble about havin a concealed pod and an FMIC etc etc, but never about driving a 1110kg (1.2tonne) car that obviously did more than 120kw at the fly. I'm still on my P's. If you get busted, tell em to weigh your car, and on the day you take it to the RTA load up some sand bags into your tyre well and under the front seats :D

I got pulled over last night for a 'routine license check' while I was dropping my mates home.

It was 12 at night and I didnt have my license on me, nor P plates.. the copper was pretty nice, and was more interested in how a 'p plater' could afford a car like this. But he was still a bit pissed at me because I didnt have my p plates up, and I got a $105 fine. I have to take my license in this afternoon.

He didnt mention anything about not being able to drive it, but he did look a bit stunned at the SAFC on my dash, and the Electronic boost controller idling away.. oh, and the boost guage mounted on my pillar.

I just think he was bored and wanted to check out my car.

Oh.. and fine me :D

    • Nice shot! They look super clean. The roof rack delete on the black one is interesting. Would like to see more pictures from different angles. It's subtle but could make quite a difference to how the car looks in profile.
