Hey guys,

I am wanting to get a digital tv tuner...but before I do, i would like to ask those that already have this type of unit installed and whether reception quality is good even on the move.

There are also tuners that have dual antenna's...are these better?

Any feedback would be great.

Mate, if you are gonna buy one for $120 from eBay, make sure that they come with the antennas. dual antenna is the best. Not sure on the reception though.

I was going to buy the Garmin Nav add on unit, and also the digital TV add on unit, but ended up changing my mind as I didn't want to end up with 2 remotes, plus the Nav being controlled via the remote....

Honestly, I'd save myself the $$$ and get a full upgrade...My 2 cents worth.

I have a M35 that had the factory TV installed in Japan, so antenna (dual) are installed in the side windows either side of the boot.

I had to install a local tuner to make it work (supplied by forum member "chook") but the results are great. Reception is very stable but in area's of difficult reception the signal will drop out. You can pick these area's by the size of the antenna's on the houses around.

Very happy with the result.

Cheers

Andy

i got this unit off ebay for around $350.00, can't find any more.

works great, highly recommend it. comes with 2 antennas but not sure if its 2 tuners or not. also comes with remote extender so you can put it anywhere and use remote. also has 2 aux a/v in and i plug another dvd/divx/mp3 unit into that.

reception is great and its crystal clear. I only get cut off when behind tall buildings or hills or occasional blind spots. speeds at 100-120 km/h doesn't affect reception.

even with 2 antennas mine always droppnig in and off... depending where you are relative to the nearest tv relay station, and where your dual antenna is installed, i find on my car I get better reception travelling east west, and worse reception travelling north south.

i know for melbourne we have a transmitter up mt dandenong in the east. and I live in the west. that probably explain why,

and my antennas are stuck on front and rear windscreens. i know there's a guy @ the meet who have the same antenna as mine (probably Chris Roger's unit) whose got his antennas mounted on both sides of the rear quarter windows. I'm not sure about which one is better, keen to hear from the owner of that car whether his reception is better or not.

That is the unit I have. It is the best.

From memory Chook was selling them for about $350 so $500 sounds a bit steep.

That was scorp's car (Sam). I was talking to him about the antennas, he said his reception did not really improve from the original one antenna option. The two antennas were not done by Chris Rogers, it was done here in Melbourne, but I believe the initial installation was done by Chris. He was just sourcing for ways to get better reception.

He said that he was advised that the only other way to get better reception would be to wait as the signals were only going to get stronger as time went by because of all the changes to digital TV that the government is currently undertaking.

So that was a pretty crappy option, just wait for it to get better.

yeah, hopefully...

did you hear the news about digital radio on radio? i wonder if our Bose stereo can receive the signal without modifications,

and whether the digital radio will be broadcasted through the DTV channels just like the ABC Digg Jazz and SBS radios?

theres a differene between twin antenna and twin tuner. the ones I use are twin tuner. Rianto that is what yours is. Sams (scorp) is the same. antennas were not done by me.

twin antenna - just that. two antennas feeding one tuner. twn tuner - takes both antennas into a tuner each - averages the signal and uses the best signal at the time.

as for chook. he's no longer doing them. I've considered it but MOQ kills it. part of the reason he got out.

FYI that tuner is used by GME for marine applications and it has been sealed acocordingly. I can get those as I have an account with GME fr those.

cost - relative to what you think its worth :)

Chris, forgot to ask you on the phone...

but anyhow i think it's easier to write up here...

heard about this news on radio about new digital radio broadcasts...

1) Can our current V35 Bose receive digital radio signal?

2) if not, can we receive the digital radio signal through the DVB receiver similar to the one you've installed in mine ?

1. recieve - yes. process into useable audio - nope.

2. nope. dedicated radio. have yet to really look into it as brisbane already has it but the reception is crap.

the current units are portable table radios.

alright, no worries... I won't worry about it unless they are announcing the shutdown of analog radio signal, like what they are doing with analog TV.

but i reckon if that happens one day, there'll be similar 'set top boxes' for car radios like we have now for TVs...

you reckon?

    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
    • Well they got my money but they are not getting my gearbox !
    • It's needed for rolling idle up, and I think it is a decider on VCT also.
    • I mean, not really. Link ECU's can absolutely still have errors from the ECU thinking it's getting a sensor it's not expecting. I would imagine the speed at the ECU level in Nistune does absolutely nothing anyway? I assume the ECU does not do any fancy TC stuff with regards to front+rear wheel speed or anything of that like anyway. Someone who uses Nistune may be more fluent in it.
