Good job nobody was seriously hurt or killed.

Driver interviewed after tunnel crash

Article from: PerthNow Jon Bassett

FOUR people were injured after being hit by a utility as they walked through the Northbridge Tunnel in East Perth early today.

Police said the four were the driver and three passengers in a Nissan Skyline that had hit the wall of the eastbound lane.

They had left the car and were walking out of the tunnel when they were hit by a white Holden Commodore utility.

The incident happened about 4.30am.

Police said none of the four was seriously hurt.

One was found in bushes near the tunnel exit with back injuries, another had a broken ankle.

A man, believed to be the driver of the utility that stopped on the Graham farmer Freeway, was being interviewed by police.

How did the commodore ute manage to clean them up? they would have been walking in the emergency lane surely.

And how do you hit the wall in the tunnell? They were either doing some sort of speed, somebody forced them off the road (not necesarily on purpose but a blind lane change), or somebody left something on the road (fallen off/out of a car). Either way something is wrong!

Maybe they walked out in the direction of the traffic? Would have been dumb, dumb, dumb though.

Roads were quite slippery this morning...maybe that was one factor in the initial crash? Still the tunnel is supposed to be dry inside right?

tunnel = wet this morning

friends in car = would show off

drop a gear and plant it to hear the sound of zorst in tunnel, wheel spin, wall grinding.

never know..could be?

i went thru the tunnel one day and a lady was standing out here car that had broken down. the lights on the roof where flashing ambar and a PA system was telling her to get back into her car. it was really loud and i could easily hear it in my car. i don't think your alound to walk or ride a bike through the tunnel, someone correct me if i'm wrong.

first post "walking out of the tunnel when they were hit by a white Holden Commodore utility"

second post "I wonder if this was that burgundy 4 door 33. haha"

Funny how people ... namely most of you ... make comments that have no foundation in fact. You read some news article that is at best void of any fact or detail such as how the initial accident occurred and you lot of brainstrusts jump to the conclusion that the driver was some moron hoon speeding and driving with reckless abandon. I know the driver of the Skyline and besides being a top bloke he's a damn good driver who has gone through advanced driver training and has experience in rally driving ... he no doubt has better skills than most of you lot combined. Grow up people, accidents happen even to the best of drivers. The police are not looking to charge the Skyline driver with ANYTHING but the guy in the ute is facing a number of serious charges which could result in a prison sentence. BTW don't believe everything you read in the press because there was only one passenger in the Skyline not 3. One more thing when you moan about some Skyline hoons giving everyone else a bad name you moan about the fact you're all the victims of stereotyping ... how is it any different if you come to a conclusion based on little or no facts that the driver in this case was a hoon or lacked the skill to drive that car? Like I said before, grow up and have the sense to make a comment based on FACTS, or don't make a comment at all.

That is fair enough but I think we'd be interested in how he crashed in the tunnel...call it a lesson learned?

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... HTH
    • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
