This game just sounds like race driver GRID with a fresh coat of paint....

I think I'll stick with GRID tho,

also spending $6,000 on a gaming rig is a waste of money, the core essentials where the most money should be spent is CPU, Mainboard, RAM, Graphics Card, PSU and to a lesser degree Hard Drives and that would run you up at most around the $2000 mark if you were to grab the top shelf stuff (except for the CPU, who wants to pay $1500 for an i7 extreme :\ ) paying for watercooling and all that crap is total wank imo.

Can I ask why didn't you like the game??

I've got the game and I like it...It's infinitely better than ProStreet and Undercover. I've always stated that this game is going head to head with Grid.

I'm waiting for Forza 3 as well but comparing Shift against Forza 3, Shift is an Arcade game with some sim aspects and improvements in driving (yes many people have been complaining about the handling but once you adjust the handling then it's very good) while Forza 3 is a full on Sim driving game

So it's two different games essentially

Hmm, not really. The developer behind NFS shift has most of the people responsible for the excellent FIA GTR games involved. It was marketed as a sim type game and while I understand that it's not meant to be as realistic as GTR, it's meant to go a lot of the way.

The shift control scheme and physics are wooden at best, there's very little feel to the cars and while I agree the aural effects are nothing short of awesome the rest of the game sucks a big one. The low level cars are drivable and fun enough, but as you move up the levels to the race cars and the fun stuff like the Zonda R and SpecV, the controls are too sensitive, even with adjustment in the menu, then the cars bounce unrealistically causing more unplayability and crashing.

Nope definitely not my bag. I'm extremely satisfied with my swap for Dirt2 and I'm looking forward to Forza and even more so GT5 later in the year.

Fair enough...It's better that what most people who don't like the game just comparing to Forza 3 only (even though the game hasn't even been released yet)

Yeah I guess Shift has split personality...wants to be sim but also wants to be arcade... yeah I have agree the driving model is bit crap. Adjustments to dead zone stuff helps but it could have been better. The worst thing is the drifting part of the game...when you have a (in my case) a full spec S15 for drifting and it just spins out off the line is just silly. I can remember one of the videos Vaugh Gittin Jr. saying that he helped with the drift mechnics to make it realistic...I think he was just talking crap because it's just wacked - I even have to dumb down to easy and have all the assists on to get a good drift

Dirt 2 is a good game too...I'm just juggling between the two

2k... ur dreaming, you can setup a "good" gaming machine for a teenager maybe and keep updating it every few months, which is fine if thats what your happy with. That should perform pretty much to the same level of a PS3 or 360.

But for people who have money and want to pay for it, then 2k will barely cover the CPU and case. The one i built for my mate has these core components... not including the water cooling which is only a wank if you dont overclock.

Intel Core i7 975

EVGA X58 SLI Classified Hydro Copper

6GB Corsair Dominator GT PC3 2000 C8 DDR3

EVGA GeForce GTX-295 CO-OP FTW Edition

All that alone came to almost 4k

And this still isnt going to extremes, he does want to double the GFX cards and double the RAM...

I'll stick to my $300-$500 consoles.

at least with consoles the games are optimised to the system rather than having to do it the other way around.

On the other hand, computers aren't as bad as they used to be, my (almost) 3 year old desktop with 2gb RAM and the only upgrade being an 8600GT video card runs most newish games fine, albeit without all the bells and whistles turned on

how is the handling of shift? is it more like the older NFS games (such as underground) or is it more like prostreet? i thought pro street was terrible in most aspects (drag and drift were ok, but track racing was terrible). the older games were unrealistic but at least they were managable. and if it makes any difference, i'm wanting to know for the sony.

as for the pc vs console debate, i'm no computer nerd and don't really give a flying firetruck if the pc has a slightly better graphics display. it also costs a buttload more, can't just simply unplug a couple of cables, stick it in a bag and take it to a mates place and plug it into their tv and play multiplayer with other non computer nerds, LOL. also i don't play that often so outlaying heaps of coin on a pc would just be a waste for me. as long as the game plays well i don't care about the graphics. hell i still love playing mario world on my SNES. also with a console i can lie back in the lounge without having to balance a keyboard and a mouse (even though that isn't as relevant for racing games).

As I said on here before...Shift has split personality...wants to be sim but also wants to be arcade. handling is alright but has the tendency to oversteer. Most of is cured by adjusting the deadzones on the controller....don't get me started on drifting in this..

As for the neverending PC vs Console debate. Yes PC will cost a crapload more but you don't have to rob a bank to build a decent PC. Yes you can spend 6k for a kickass "gaming" PC but what does it give you in return? (other than running Crysis and Crysis Warhead at 50FPS). I built my PC last year and paid just under 2k and runs great.

The last PC I built for a friend (which was 2 months ago) was this:

Intel Core i7 920 (2.66GHz/4.80 GT/s Bus Speed/45nm/8MB L3)

ASUS P6T SE motherboard

6GB Corsair Triple 1333C9 DDR3 RAM

2x Seagate 500GB SATA2 HDDs

Sapphire 1GB HD4890

Pioneer DVR218L DVD Burner

Coolermaster RC690 Case

Coolermaster Extreme 650W PSU

Zalman CNPS9900A CPU Cooler

All up $1618. Granted my friend still had a decent LCD monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse setup (if he didn't then it would cost him just on 2k). The machine runs great and all the new games look sweet (although this is an all-rounder machine)

Nobody can win a PC vs Console debate....Consoles have their pros and cons and PC have pros and cons

can't just simply unplug a couple of cables, stick it in a bag and take it to a mates place and plug it into their tv and play multiplayer with other non computer nerds, LOL.

Actually....you can do that.

Get a small tower case, you can plug yout TV into your card, and you can get wireless controllers for PCs...but its still a couple of KGs heavier than any other console, :)

Handling is like ProStreet...with enough practice you'll get the hang of it, but then as soon as you go back to another racing game, you'll suck at it, being used to Shift. I experience massive understeer, others the opposite. I think with a properly calibrated wheel, and pedals, it might be a fun game. I'll admit, i think PS3 would be easier for steering, since you can control how much steer you give, ie, wuater, half, full, where as a keyboard, with the arrows, its either no steer, or full lock, unless you've got a wheel.

Its starting to become fun since I've got the hang of drifting now...almost.

I haven't played GT4 in a long time...I've still got my save game with all my cars (most of them have setups done)...and racing my friend (his R32 GTS-T verses my Stagea RS4 S. and R33 GTR vs Stagea 260RS) on trial mountain

I just attempted NFS Shift on PC with keyboard... it failed. Anyone using a controller of some sort on the PC for Shift e.g. Xbox 360 controller on PC - does it do the no steer or full lock thing like when using keyboard?

ok, shut up fella's. Last night I was tired, today I was typing fast so I could hide what I was actually doing from the boss, and no excuse for the last typo.

You get what I mean though.

What do PS/Xbox owners have to say? Surely it'd be much easier than binary steering on the PC ?

i played it on PC, had to play a bit before I got used to the sensitivity issues. BUt I do have to say, it's very enjoyable.....except for the drift section which is just impossibly on keyboard. The only complaint I have is that the cars seem more unstable than that of Gran Tourismo.........seems the slightly turn while on full throttle will unsettle the cars. In the end I had to turn on the stability and traction control, other wise it would've been just impossible.

i think the only way to play this game properly is with a controller or steering wheel and pedals, becuase with alot of it especially drifting you have to be gentle with the throttle. i got used to drifting now and like it, and the gtr spec v is crazy to drive, i can take corners so fast in it. while some cars like the e46 m3 i have a bit of trouble driving because for some reason its very twitchy ill have to do some tuning.

I'll stick to my $300-$500 consoles.

Way to rip your friend off.

i7 920 D0 will go over 4GHz the 975 is a waste.

Classified + EK Full cover is cheaper than the Hydro that isn't full cover.

Despite owning that RAM myself I'll freely admit it is a complete wank and not worth the price.

Any single PCB GTX 295 will clock as fast if not faster than the CO-OP FTW. Older dual PCB are slightly faster again in most cases and then two GTX 275s are faster again.

If you are going to compare brand new hardware you'd at least have to say $600-$1200 consoles that they sold for when they actually had new hardware.

First Need for Speed: SHIFT patch addresses two shocking omissions

By James Cottee - Wed Sep 23, 2009 9:13am

A week after launch, EA has released the first patch for the PC version of its new racing game, Need for Speed SHIFT.

The 13 meg update addresses two shocking omissions: the lack of local area network multi-player, and the lack of full menu navigation support for a commonly-used PC peripheral known as a 'mouse.'

In the hurly-burly business of porting console games to the desktop, it's easy to forget that PC gamers like to connect their computers together for 'LAN' play, and at times use control inputs other than joypads.

Well done, EA.

Bravo.

    • I know why it happened and I’m embarrassed to say but I was testing the polarity of one of the led bulb to see which side was positive with a 12v battery and that’s when it decided to fry hoping I didn’t damage anything else
    • I came here to note that is a zener diode too base on the info there. Based on that, I'd also be suspicious that replacing it, and it's likely to do the same. A lot of use cases will see it used as either voltage protection, or to create a cheap but relatively stable fixed voltage supply. That would mean it has seen more voltage than it should, and has gone into voltage melt down. If there is something else in the circuit dumping out higher than it should voltages, that needs to be found too. It's quite likely they're trying to use the Zener to limit the voltage that is hitting through to the transistor beside it, so what ever goes to the zener is likely a signal, and they're using the transistor in that circuit to amplify it. Especially as it seems they've also got a capacitor across the zener. Looks like there is meant to be something "noisy" to that zener, and what ever it was, had a melt down. Looking at that picture, it also looks like there's some solder joints that really need redoing, and it might be worth having the whole board properly inspected.  Unfortunately, without being able to stick a multimeter on it, and start tracing it all out, I'm pretty much at a loss now to help. I don't even believe I have a climate control board from an R33 around here to pull apart and see if any of the circuit appears similar to give some ideas.
    • Nah - but you won't find anything on dismantling the seats in any such thing anyway.
    • Could be. Could also be that they sit around broken more. To be fair, you almost never see one driving around. I see more R chassis GTRs than the Renault ones.
    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
