hello

i just received the crushing news that i have no compression in #4 cylinder. this has come at a bad time financially (though i dont suppose there is ever a good time to blow a motor) and im trying to assess my options.

im considering throwing in the towel and offloading the car as is, but im not quite sure how much i could get for it. ive seen figures ranging from $3000 to $8000. the car is a 93 R33 gtst, black, manual. its in pretty good nick, with 130000km. its got 9 months rego etc etc. some mods, has been well maintained, i recently had the brakes rebuilt and new fluid/pads, and the trans and diff oil replaced with good expensive stuff.

alternatively, i could replace the motor for around $4-5k i guess. looking around for motors/packages at the moment.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers, mitch

Depends dude if you still love your car just fix it up

BTW can I ask where you got your front bar from ?

haha everyone loves that front bar! i bought it off ebay, from a fellow called "mybodykits" from memory. its top secret style. i got it for like $350 delivered too! needed a little work to accomodate the intercooler and mount some indicators, but it looks sexy eh?

in regards to loving my car... i loved it once. if i replace the motor ill still sell it. ive got a daily now, so i want a 300+rwkw gtrrrrr for my weekender.

ill sell it to you for $7000.... is that your idea of super cheap lol?

im not sure whats causing the lack of compression. i will speak to my mechanic and see if its worth further inspection, could be a seized valve or something. then id only have to replace the head.

its very puzzling though, an intake joint between the turbo and intercooler blew off when the problem appeared. originally we thought it was a timing belt slip, retarded timing, backfire etc... but ive got no idea now.

If timing skipped a tooth, all cylinders would drop down equally.

Get him to do a dry and wet test, then post results.

It may not be as bad as you think. Do a leak down test it will tell you what's wrong and this decide where to go from there. Really shouldn't be as expensive as you think it's gonna be.

Ps... Im Assuming you have basic mechanical knowledge and can do most of the labour yourself..

Cheers..

    • Hi guys, long time no post as per usual! It's been a busy year so far, the biggest thing being a new job.  After 28 years in the automotive industry I decided it was time for a change.  I was losing faith in the industry and where it's heading.  Now in a completely different industry (electrical) working for a company that manufacture water pump contollers.  Not as sexy as cars but it's an interesting,  challenging industry. I now don't work Saturdays which is a bonus!  It's still 50-55 hours a week but having Saturdays ack after 28 years of working them is awesome!   No news on the GT-R but i did decide to add some more JDM goodness into my life....           1990 300 ZX.  She's not perfect but for a 35 year old car she ain't bad!  Just going to tidy it up a bit and enjoy it.  It's currently auto but will start stockpiling everything for a manual swap. It WILL distract me even further from the GT-R but im hoping not for too long! It somewhat proves a 6'8" freak can fit in a 300 ZX.  Sort of...  I drove it home from the previous owners house in Melbourne via Black Spur and Merton Gap (2 awesome bits of Victorian twisty road) and it was amazing!  Handles so well!!!   I don't think it would be worthy of a full build page but I'll post up some of the upgrades here if anyone is interested?  Cheers guys!
    • End game is to: - Remove all the slop from old worn parts - Adjust setup so that the wheels actually fit and the car is drivable (currently it is not because of the extreme rubbing on the guards).   Progress over the last couple of days, removed the rear hubs! Next steps: - Buy bushings - Replace bushings/bearings on hub - Reinstall
