hey lads, my mate is interested in buying a legnum. on paper they look like a nice package. 4wd, twin turbo 2.5ltr V6, active yaw control, 206kw out of the box, and the practicality of a sporty little station-wagon. these cars are still pretty uncommon on the streets. has anyone had any personal experiance with these cars? ive seen a few youtube clips, thats about it. cheers adam

I like them, I know a SAU member on her who has one.

I am sure they have plenty of potential with the power and more room then a Skyline.

IMO their kinda like the Nissan Stagea's of the Mitsubishi world, +1 extra turbo and 4WD.

The Autech stag is 4WD and has an RB26DETT dont forget.

Its another 3000GTO............over priced shit box really.

wow, your close mindedness is amazing!

the legnum is great at what its built for, and that is to carry around a family in japans snowy mountain areas (this is where the AWD comes in with the AYC)

On the street they arent the fastest things out but they are reasonably quick for what they are.

but i guess if nissan didnt make it, it can't be good! :D

^^Agreed! West have you ever driven a Mitsubishi before?

Given that they can be imported for the same money as an early model RS-Four Stagea, but have more power, a better torque spread, are lighter, faster and are better looking, I fail to see how 'over-priced shit box' works in this situation.

Unless I was chasing big horsepower, I'd choose a Legnum over a Stagea every day of the week, and I'd even choose a manual Legnum over an Autech 260RS because they have better power in the mid-range where it's most useable as a daily driver.

cheers lads. is there much in the way of aftermarket support? it seems like quite an uncommon engine, how easy would parts and servicing be?

as for an over priced shit box, i think 14k for a 2002 model is a great price. sure we are all nissan fans here, but seriously...

like Kristian said in his 2nd post maybe troll through ozvr4

'naughtika' seems to know alot there too.

Facelift (1998 or newer) + Type-S (This is the one with flared guards and AYC) + Manual + Sunroof + Recaros + Trigger Mauve = Win

I have driven a few and know a few guys on OzVR4 who own them. Great standard cars and if you only want to lightly modify them they are great bang for your buck. Most likely my next ride actually!

But don't take my word for it a picture is worth a thousand words...

:D

stagea seems more roomy than a legnum.

easier to mod the stagea, parts can be used across the nissan range

gearbox in legnum is suss and expensive to fix once broke

modding the stagea is cheaper (ie 1 turbo on the 2.5 stag vs 2 for the legum = less room in legnum to get hands in, etc)

for me, stag wins hands down. looks boxier than a legnum but in my eyes thats a more 'sleeper' look

In terms of ease of obtaining parts, my brother in law lives on the west coast of SA (most people would call that pretty remote) and in terms of basic parts for servicing, he's so far had about a 50/50 strike rate with the parts he needs being readily available through Mitsubishi Oz, because the 6A13TT is a sibling to the 6A12 motor of the Galant hatches sold here in the mid '90s. For the rest, one phone call to Mitsubishi NZ solves the problem.

I actually owned my Galant BEFORE they became eligible under SEVS (brought it back as a personal import in 2000), and just bought all my parts through Mitsu NZ, three days transit time if I was ever in a hurry and needed them asap. Most times, I'd book in for a service at my local, and my mechanics would contact the parts guys in NZ, they'd list the cost for all the parts needed for the service, I'd pay on VISA, and they'd turn up a few days later. It's even easier now because there are workshops who are starting to get more and more experience with them.

As has already been mentioned in this thread, they're not great for extracting huge hp out of, mainly because it's pretty tight working in the engine bay. The auto gearboxes work fine forever if they get regular fluid changes, same with the AYC diffs.

In terms of size and seeming roomy, the Stagea is 30mm longer inside, but the Legnum is both wider and taller than the Stagea, as well as being 80kg lighter...

Damn those VR4's look tuff!

Im not close minded. They look better than the Stag for sure but comparing power, economy, modifying, bang for bucks, spare parts support............its exactly another 3000GT. Not to consider there is hardly any snow left here in Aust where you'd need your AYC.

    • I can get more photos of it here soon and I plan to make a thread detailing the process. I received the car this way and it sorely needs refinishing. That is probably the most appealing photo of it. Up close it is fading, cracked, and needs to be re-glued. Depending on their condition I'm on the fence between refinishing or making a new set.  Another angle hiding the pimples and razor pumps
    • According to this thread the RS4V with build plate RC40 comes with the R200 diff @ 4.083 ratio as well (mine has said RC40 denotation). We may need to check if the axle stubs are the same pattern as well. The auto subframes have longer axles. However I think yours being a later Series 2 as well, we should have the same bolt pattern for the diff stubs. Unless your upgraded rear also has upgraded axles. Either way, I would not be opposed to pulling the covers to check so I can inspect that  fancy rear core  Also I don't have HICAS. I don't believe that should change things but I hope the people here with heaps more experience than me can correct me if I'm wrong   Let me know if you want to attempt to make this work and I can get some pictures of mine from under the car.
    • It's not that straightforward. For example I have had this code because my ignitor/power transistor wires were unplugged. It knows something is wrong but has no idea what it means. If you want to actually diagnose this I recommend following the service manual flowchart for code 21. Ohm out the harness, coilpacks, inspect the ECU, etc. And again, it's entirely possible for there to be no problem at all but if you're running a different coilpack it'll trigger the code because it doesn't like what it sees.
    • If it (the code) wasn't still current, it should have gone away by itself by now. No, nothing it 10/10. But it is quite likely. Everything else to do with the ignition could still be responsible (which is wires and connectors). The car is an old piece of shit now, so all the wires and connectors are also old pieces of shit.
