jakez88
hey guys i'm torn between the castrol edge 5w-30 and the motul turbolight 4100 10w-40 for my next service. would like to know pros and cons for both and past experiences. i've read the oil thread and i know the motul gets heaps of good praise but i want to know about castrol edge more from the people that use it especially with the hotter months closing in. another question i wanted to know is if castrol vmx 80 will be fine for my gearbox and if not what other alternative around that price range would be better? also what can i put into my diff? i have a daily r33 gtst series II with 105,000kms. thanks Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/294699-castrol-edge-5w-30-vs-motul-4100-turbolight-10w-40/ Share on other sites
steve12
You Shouldn't use anything less than 10w Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/294699-castrol-edge-5w-30-vs-motul-4100-turbolight-10w-40/#findComment-4915807 Share on other sites
Moodles2
5w-30 will protect better when cold, but depending on the condition on the motor the hot rating might be too thin, you'll only know you have blowby issues is by going ahead and trying it. I live in botswana and it's a similar climate, very hot, i have a choice of shell 25w-60w,15w-40w, castrol magnatic, havoline semi synthetic? which do you think i should use Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/294699-castrol-edge-5w-30-vs-motul-4100-turbolight-10w-40/#findComment-4916523 Share on other sites

If 25w-60 and 15w40 are the only options, then 15w-40 I would choose, 25w is just too thick when cold. jakez88
thanks for your input guys. ended up getting the motul. been recommended vmx m and not the vmx 80. does anyone know the difference? also would like to know if the nulon 75w-90 semi synth smooth shift gear oil would be suitable. nulon suggests their 75w-85 100% synthetic but would liek to know if the semi synth will do fine? _Ryan_
In a good condition RB25 I HIGHLY recommend Fuchs 10w30, Bursons stock it, Have been running it in the Stagea for 40k km, motor is cleaner, smoother, more economical than when i first got it, i have run motul once, wasnt a fan. Their 10w40 is another option. Motul 300v I understand, but the lower end stuff I dont get the hype. Chuckie has had his oil regularly tested up to 20k km and the fuchs doesn't deteriorate. heller44
Same, smells nice too.. Had a workshop replace the transfer case for me, they put in decent gearbox oil but it doesn't like it, 4th and 5th synchros are a bitch. Going to dump it and go back to the vmx80 that I was running before without an issue. I believe some drift teams are sponsored by it and havent lost an engine. Reggi34dr
I haven't had any probs with Castrol Edge 5w-30 for the 3.5yrs I've had my car. it's the only decent 5w-30 readily available off the shelf that i've found and it's the recommended weight in my manual. my car is NA though. BezerkR32
it would be interesting to know how many of the above mentioned oils are actually certified as meeting there advertised spec. And viscosity as in the thickness is not the spec either. Should be running a SL spec oil or higher which is commonly a semi-synthetic at the very least. Check on the back of the packaging. If its not got the API stamp, then you dont actually know what you are getting and 80% of oils retailed off the shelf havent as it costs big dollars to have a product certified. Repsol oils are what i used in my shop for 5 years for this reason.
