Hi all, first post...

I recently bought a 1993 R33 GTS-25T Skyline. Everything seemed all good when i bought the car about 3 weeks ago, but now have run into a few problems.

The car seems to be loosing Oil. the oil pressure guage seems to drop significantly whenever i give it some. I topped the oil up, ran better at first, but then came back again.

There seems to be a build up of oil around the air filter.

Another thing i noticed is steam comming out the oil filler cap, when i filled up...

Car has a frount mount, 3 inch exhaust, remote oil filter, boost controller (usually set at around 10psi)

Is my engine stuffed?

Any help would be appreciated...

Yeah dude what you have described doesn't sound good at all. When you say leaking oil do you mean from the block? oil filter, oil pump, oil feed to the turbo? It is running hot? I don't really trust the factory gauges hey, not to say take their reading with a grain of salt however just use them as a guide. My factory boost gauge is stuffed, it reads 0 vac the whole time boosting or just sitting at idle. But yeah it could be serious or maybe not too serious. more info dude

Car has an aftermarket oil temp guage, which usually sits between 80 to 90 degrees, water temp is usually pretty good.

Topped the car up with two litres of oil just before and seems to be running ok, although obviously the problem isn't fixed.

yeah there's deposits of oil around the engine bay where the air filter sits...

will take it to a mechanic for a quick look tomorrow...

didnt get a chance to take it to the mechanic, oil dosn't look to be too bad...

there is a build up of oil on the surface of the engine bay around the air filter. I pulled off the filter, there is a fair bit of oil in and around the AFM...

What does this mean, what is this an indication of?

might be a ****ed turbo that is almost blown up, if anyone opens their oil cap when the motor is hot then yeah a bit of steam will come out as the ****ing motor gets very hot....

draining your oil and checking the colour is a good thing to do, that will at least tell you if your up for a new head gasket or not.... as for piston rings i wouldn't know most engines do not need rebuilds until at least 250 000, especially RB's as they are really strong motors...

but yeah since you dont' really know what is going on, i would take it to a mechanic ASAP, one that works with imports of course.....

also try not boosting it at all and see if you lose much oil.... but yeah driving it around daily may not be a good idea man as i have learnt in the past that if there is a problem you should sort it out before it ends up costing you too much

is it leaving a puddle of oil under the car?

does it blow blue or white smoke out the exhaust?

2 litres is a hell of a lot of oil to have to put in... how fast does it use the oil?

what colour is the oil on the dipstick?

is there oil in the coolant?

all these would help us answer or at least point in the right direction.

Oh, and it won't just go away. Unlike us, cars don't heal.

that maybe cause the gauge isn't connected up to the boost line ... thats what i did when i put in my aftermarket boost gauge, i was too lazy to fit in the t peice and left it not connected so it reads 0 all the time. i think that factory gauges are ok ... but aren't fast and accurate enough for some applications thats all ... eg ... theres definitely a big difference in response time with the stock boost gauge ... however is max readin is ok ...

mechanics couldn't find any problems with it, but at the moment car is running well. after driving around on stock boost all week, i put it up to ten last night and raced my mate.

Car runs good as gold, does not seem to be any problems any more which is strange...

also just after i got the car i had a turbo manifold gasket replaced. mechanics never said anything wrong with turbo...

anyway ill see how i go

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
