Boost Issues

hey guys I've been tryin to resolve this issue for a few weeks now, but today I've finally cracked it lol problem is that my car will not boost over 5-6 psi ... this is ridiculous feels like a camry could pull past me without any problems >.< in saying that I hope u guys understand the frustration I'm going through lol

anyways the car is a Nissan Skyline R33 Series II, has got turbo back exhaust, k&n panel filter, stock intercooler and gizmo ms2 boost controller/turbo timer, surely there must be somethin wrong right? ... my boost controller seems to have no effect whatsoever at any setting, would this be because I have not wired up my boost cut defender lines? in the diagram it looks like it goes to the ecu but I havnt been able to get my hands on any wiring diagrams, at first I thought it may have been that it was caused by me just removing the factory boost solenoid completely and leaving the harness just sitting there but after putting it back in I still have no difference, the car does hold the 6psi fine, it doesnt drop off or anything like that, I've got some hairline cracks in one vacuum line which I have to get around to replacing but I highly doubt that this is causing me my boost limit.

other thing is after fitting the damn controller the sound of the turbo spooling up seems to be louder? I do have a feeling the turbo is on the way out because of the excessive movement I felt when I replaced the front/dump pipe but either way shouldnt be effecting me being limited on boost rite?

sorry for all the noob questions but I've asked around nobody seems to be able to help, hopefully someone out there in this forum can help me =)

thanks in advance =)

get someone to help you, thats the quickest way to get it sorted

post in your local state chapter "please help me install a boost controller, free beer" and get someone to come out

will save dozens of threads back and forth and guesses etc

thanks for the quick replies guys, just spent another hour underneath the hood, all my lines and everything appear to be fine, so Im narrowing down my issue to be at the boost controller, because before installation of the boost controller a few weeks ago I was hittin 7psi boost constantly, now with the controller I'm hitting 5 to 6 as stated, I'm thinking that I havnt gone high enough in the settings because the gizzmo ms2 is a bloody difficult item to play with lol in my opinion anyways ... anyone got one of these things and know exactly what to set the duty cycle and gain at and if I'm meant to set anything else up because all I've played with is the duty and gain percentages, my duty is at 40% and my gain is at 10%

anyway my next step is to wire up the FCD side of my boost controller, I have a white wire for FCD out which states that it should be wired to the ECU SIDE of the vehicles load sensor for determining boost cut, and a yellow wire for FCD in which states that this should be wired to the SENSOR SIDE of the vehicles load sensor for determining boost cut ... now I've read that on the R33's boost cut is controlled by air flow right? so one wire is to go to the AFM and one to the ECU, problem is I cant get a hold of any wiring diagrams would anyone be able to tell me exactly where I'm meant to solder these 2 wires to?

  • 1 year later...

hey mate i have the same issue with mine although mine hits 7psi then creeps to 9 at high revs . i think something is faulty with the ms2 itself . in the instructions it states that it needs to be connected to a direct pressure source like fuel pressure regulator.i know its an old ass post but if u have worked out the prob plz pm me with solution.

    • Stock R33 boost control, with the exhaust, and FMIC done, will boost creep. There is no tuning around it if it is the factory boost solenoid.   If it has an aftermarket electronic boost controller, the settings/mapping can be altered in it.   Oil could be anything as mentioned, however did it ever do it before you did the turbo swap? How much and how often did you drive the car before the swap?   I'm hinging on too much oil supply, or it's not draining properly.   To check, pull the air outlet off the turbo. Is it full of oil? Drop the exhaust at the turbo, does it appears to be oiled/coked? Now pull turbo and check the exhaust manifold, does it appears oiled and coked the same way?   Secondly, the PCV could even be stuffed / not functioning properly and will cause blowing of blue smoke.
    • Almost any ECU would work, from a 30 yr old PowerFC to a new Motec/Autronic. But presumably you want new middle of the road ECU, meaning that you want a Haltech or a Link, most likely. As to which model though? I dunno. I don't keep track of what they have in their current ranges. You don't want a plug in though, because plug ins can start to cause you the same wiring issues that you have to chase up with your stock ECU/loom swaps when an engine transplant is involved. If you use a Haltech (and presumably a Link) you could put the base map for the engine in and drive it around and not even need to "tune" it. It will work just fine. I can't recommend a tuner without a location (and even then I can't recommend many, being as I never use any tuners except myself and my brother-in-law). And not many tuners are happy to remote tune. Maybe they'd be happier doing it for a basically stock setup that just needs to be demonstrated to be working properly. But even then, not being able to be with the car to see what the hell is going on and sort out the inevitable problems that will result from an engine conversion done by an amateur..... unlikely to be enthusiastic about the job. And if you think that just adding 2 wires for the boost sensor is difficult - you don't want to be trying to install and set up an aftermarket ECU. You're going to have to bite down hard on something with either approach.
    • wired everything up and confirmed that the red with white stripe is indeed the fuel pump pin on this harness.
