Hey people,

Put an RB25 with a few mods in my R32 & am currently trying to decide what sort of aftermarket ECU setup I want to go with.

Have been considering a Nistune, etc remap of standard ECU, Power FC or something like Haltech.

Just after some opinions on the pros & cons of both AFM & MAP sensor based ECUs.

I know AFMs can suffer stalling, etc due to reversion of air when throttle is suddenly shut but a BOV should solve most of this, yeah?

Also, obviously with a MAP sensor, you do not need to purchase upgraded AFMs...

So while the Haltech is more expensive than the other options, by the time I buy a Z32 AFM & EBC (which the Haltech also has) I will be getting close to spending the same money. I just dont know heaps about MAP sensor based tuning...

Did your tuner give you a short list of ECU's to choose from, or recommend one more than the others that he prefers to use?

Im selling a cheap MAP-ECU at the moment

(shameless plug)

going Power-fc instead for my track-RB26

www.map-ecu.com

in my Rb25 I am using an AEM F/IC-8, like a greddy emanage, but runs off manifold pressure not air flow meters

seeing 225awkw / 240rwkw at 14psi

with a 18psi actuator Im hoping for around 250kw at the wheels

lap-top tuneable

Havent really decided on a tuner yet. So far have done all work to car myself however this I obviously cant. Took my car to a shop recently for some diagnostic work & he suggested Haltech & strongly suggested I stay away from Nistune.

The other advantage to the Haltech is a friend of a friend used to work installing & tuning Wolf's & now deals with Haltech so can possibly get a very good price.

However, saying that, Im still quite open to any ECU, then will find someone to tune it.

Have just been looking at Link...

Why do you ask? Do you have any other suggestions for ECU choice?

haltech, autronic, are the main stream ones id look into. all around 2k.

ems, vipec, link, adaptronic, wolf. "can" be just as good but due to there low usage tuning can be abit hard to find.

microtech is good but from past experiances on there older models tuning resolution is abit poor. not sure on there newer "LT" models

motec is very good, but unless its a top of the line m800 etc etc tuning software is still dos based and the fact you have to "buy" options for them ontop of there already high price is abit of a turn off.

my pic of the bunch is autronic. very reliable and easy to tune. (ie: low cost of tuning)

id steer clear of a maf only ecu. (i say maf only because most of the above ecus can run a maf sensor aswell,) makes plumning easier and a map sensor is far better than a 20 year old air flow meter that maxes out and then is tuned by a good guess..

power fc is a great choice for plug and play, but autronic and haltech and motec do plug ecus. either in the stock case or use a patch loom.

cheeres.

Pick your Tuner 1st. Haltech Platinum is as good as it gets for full aftermarket but the MAF Option is not yet functional.

Any tuner that cant see the benefits of Nistune on a road car should be avoided.

Yesterday we gave up on a wild GTR with PFC that gave nothing but trouble to 1/2 of WAs tuners and fitted a Nistune, Problem solved.

Not another one of these threads... :)

There have been similar debates in the past.

If someone is telling you to stay away from Nistune - in all honesty - i would be questioning why they would say that and if they actually have enough of an idea about products to say that.

Cost vs gain, Nistune is the best bang for buck for mild/medium street cars and uses everything required for a car to run factory with a better tune (ie cold start, idle return, under load with A/C on etc etc).

Nistune is also a piece of piss to tune, very cheap tuning costs as its very simple, Nissan has done everything for you remember, you're just adjusting a few table/settings as opposed to a Haltech for example where you have to do the entire thing from scratch which means a big $$$ bill for a FULL Tuned ECU to the level that Nistune would offer.

I've never had issues with any of my AFM cars - except where i replaced a dead AFM with two 2nd hand ones.

Both started playing up a few weeks later, intermittent and took a few weeks to sus out. That way my own fault though :)

ok. As I say I was leaning toward Nistune but this guy sorta put me off. Reckons there are still too many glitches at the moment & I had heard stuff about TPS problems, etc but from recent searches these seem solved...

My other concern is, as some of you may know, I have recently written many threads about my car overfueling on idle.

My injector pulse is 7ms & AFM signal is around 2v.

This guy & another well known tuiner have told me its due to too many mods for standard ECU, playing havoc with airflow.

It sounds like Nistune leaves the idle setup very standard so will this fix my problem?

I assume fuel maps, etc at idle CAN be played with if necessary?

cheers for the opinions so far guys

    • perhaps i should have mentioned, I plugged the unit in before i handed over to the electronics repair shop to see what damaged had been caused and the unit worked (ac controls, rear demister etc) bar the lights behind the lcd. i would assume that the diode was only to control lighting and didnt harm anything else i got the unit back from the electronics repair shop and all is well (to a point). The lights are back on and ac controls are working. im still paranoid as i beleive the repairer just put in any zener diode he could find and admitted asking chatgpt if its compatible   i do however have another issue... sometimes when i turn the ignition on, the climate control unit now goes through a diagnostics procedure which normally occurs when you disconnect and reconnect but this may be due to the below   to top everything off, and feel free to shoot me as im just about to do it myself anyway, while i was checking the newly repaired board by plugging in the climate control unit bare without the housing, i believe i may have shorted it on the headunit surround. Climate control unit still works but now the keyless entry doesnt work along with the dome light not turning on when you open the door. to add to this tricky situation, when you start the car and remove the key ( i have a turbo timer so car remains on) the keyless entry works. the dome light also works when you switch to the on position. fuses were checked and all ok ive deduced that the short somehow has messed with the smart entry control module as that is what controls the keyless entry and dome light on door opening   you guys wouldnt happen to have any experience with that topic lmao... im only laughing as its all i can do right now my self diagnosed adhd always gets me in a situation as i have no patience and want to get everything done in shortest amount of time as possible often ignoring crucial steps such as disconnecting battery when stuffing around with electronics or even placing a simple rag over the metallic headunit surround when placing a live pcb board on top of it   FML
    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
