Hey folks.

I'm looking into buying an M35. I have been browsing through these parts just to get a heads up on them. I must say there is lots of useful information, and has cleared some questions, and queries already.

I just want to know if there was anything I should be looking out for when I go to look at one?

Any known issues?

I've never imported, or bought an (already) imported car from Japan. (I own a locally delivered LS400 aka Celsior)

I am more looking to buy a car already thats already been imported, but IF I can't find something decent, I wouldn't count importing one out of the question.

At the point in time I'm after an AR-X or an Axis.

Only thing holding me up on purchasing one is the sale of my SV6 Ute.

I'm going down to Sydney this weekend to check out some, and thanks to Paramour for the suggestion, cant respond due to < 10 posts, and I have been in contact with Ben already too...

So yeah, any information, or anything feel free to throw it at this noob.

Oh yeah, if I bought a Turbo model, this would be my first turbo car

Mate 2 things to look out for:

* The turbo - If there is any smoke on startup or any sound under max torque good chance it's on it's way out. The have a ceramic exhaust wheel and run quite high boost from standard. Most of the cars I know that have done more than 120,000km's have had to rebuild it.

* The Gearbox - If there is a whine or it seems to be slipping check the colour of the oil....should be a nice bright red colour....If it's dark or brown walk away. Dipstick is near the firewall.

Make sure you drive a couple before making you final choice. Ben's cars are usually quite good.

If you are going to do mods the MN35 VQ25DET is probably the best. Although parts are still being developed.

If you just want a car to drive and don't want to fiddle the PM35 with the VQ35DE is you best bet. Mind you there is an awsome twin turbo kit for about $8G landed.

Hey Mate,

Thanks for the info. I'll keep my eyes open

I'm not really buying one to modify, its more as a cool family car, as the ute isn't that practical.

If I do want to play around I can, but it'd more than likely be left stock.

Yeah we are going on Saturday, and are having a look around and test driving some, just to make sure its what we want. I'm liking the look of the so far, but just need to give it a run.

The few that I have been looking at, they are all under 50,000km so hopefully the turbo thing won't be a factor (yet)

Is there anyway to prevent it happening?

Chris you are making an excellent choice of car, as for turbo longevity use the best oil and change regularly.

Be careful on mileage speedo readings as I know that some cars are clocked so a good look at the usual wear points both in and out of the car is adviseable.

Good luck on your search

^Thanks mate.

Yeah, a couple on their online pictures I have noticed looked quite worn in comparison to one of similar mileage, which looked near perfect.

Hopefully we'll find something sweet.

As Gerry stated, only use damn good oil (why skimp on the life-blood of your engine?)

Prevent the turbo from going? Just as possible as preventing a timing belt from going on another car I guess.

The turbo was a dealer replacement item at around the 100,000km mark in Japan.... strangely.... and unfortunately.

You can always "play" with a VQ35de powered PM35 Stagea, but your bang for buck per modification will not net you anywhere near the same gains.

BUT, you don't have to worry about keeping a couple of grand in the bank for turbo replacement and you get better economy from the N/A 3.5

Just like to say thanks for the info guys.

Going down to Sydney tomorrow, checking out Northshore Prestige and a few other joints around the place. Hopefully if there is a decent one we like we'll lay down a deposit until the ute sells.

Im really EXCITED!!!!

You will be even more excited once you get one and drive it lots.

I'm now commuting (have been for over 6 months now) 100km's a day to work and home and I just love the M35.

It's a bit bent due to a p-plater running into me and then taking off... not to mention the c*@t who key scratched my drivers door. I'm still dreaming of a bare metal respray and new kit but that will be a long way down the track.... for now i'm dreaming of mods :D

I could not recommend another wagon of any make or model for the price I got my Stagea for, it has been truely awesome!

there is a place on parramatta road that has a gold M35 stagea for sale. dont bother going there. PM if you want to know why

lol....yeh PM him lots to tell on it......pretty sure it's sold though.

Oh another thing....If it has the pop up screen make sure that it has the English conversion..........saves you coming back to Sydney to do it later at your cost.

They like to drink a bit too. but i guess craig you've got that sorted now at sas??

Sort of.... the ECU is in Korea ATM...neither of the readers SAS had would work......damn it!.....don't worry I am pushing as hard as I can....they get a phone call a week.

Hey folks.

Well we are on our way home from looking at stageas. We went to northshore imports or w/e it is. They had some nice ones but the one we had our eye on was nice, but it was owned by a smoker in japan and it smelt like an ashtray. Not for me. The others were a bit out of my price range.

We also had been on contact with another import place over in kirrawee. Now they had a few stageas for sale. An ar-x and an axis.

The axis was an 02 model with around 44k on the clock. We didn't get drive it but everything looked fine. If we were to maybe purchase they would be delivering to us and I would test drive before I hand over money. I drove the ar-x they had and it seemed fine but some little things turned us off it.

My question is has anyone heard of this mob? They are called GT High performance. Their cars have warranty and such and they were nice (owned by a couple). Has anyone had any dealings, good or bad?

Due to our country skills, driving through Sydney is a bit hectic so we took a bit to get around lol.

We are going down later this month.

I saw the gold one from Edward lees? Is that the same one. I can't pm yet and I'm on my phone driving (passenger)

thanks for the help folks.

Sort of.... the ECU is in Korea ATM...neither of the readers SAS had would work......damn it!.....don't worry I am pushing as hard as I can....they get a phone call a week.

I spoke to Tom about 2 weeks ago, said they had just got something new in but they had not tested it yet. They were hoping to do it that afternoon, I have not had a chance to ring him to check yet.

Should I assume that it failed to read the ECU too?

He did say if it did that sending them to Korea may be the only option.

Well after some hard thinking, I think I might wait until I come back down again later this month.

I don't really want to rush in and buy something because I have to/or can, and be stuck with a car that may not be as good as we could have gotten.

Any suggestions for any other dealers to check out? I found one called All Imports and also Nagoya Motors that have a few in Stock. Anyone know much about these places?

We should have checked more places out, but didn't have the chance. Aaaaaaaaaargggh

^That's what I'm starting to think hey.

I'm just going to keep my eyes open, and try and find a decent one.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I am just going to avoid this GT High Performance mod. Various things about them irks me. Listing each car as a "Mint Condition" and seeing them in person being anything but was a real turn off. Also listing their Stageas as an AXIS when they are clearly lower spec models. Pisses me off!

Anyway, I'll continue with the hunt for the lucky Stagea hahaha

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey Guys.

I'm going to Sydney again this weekend and I am checking out a few places.

The main one is a place called All Imports. Anyone been there or had anything to do with them?

I'm going down to look at this Axis, http://allimports.com.au/view/detail.php?c...=451&page=2

I have gotten some up to date internal shots, and it looks quite good, but I'm just nervous as always...

Thanks

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Comparison of the 2: Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.
