Hey has anyone put a vq30det into a v35 before, would it be able to use the standard engine mounts? Would i have to do alot of custom work? would the wiring be difficult? I am thinking about doing this because my vq35de intake sucked up a bit of water and doesnt pull in the high rpm's anymore. If it is going to be alot of work i will probably just get another vq35de :laugh:

Have you had a mechanic check it out yet? I would suggest a compression test to check the head gasket and rings are ok, otherwise it should be an easy fix.

I cant imagine enough water got up into the plenum to do much damage, water will flow through the engine at a fair rate while it is running anyway. What makes you think it has done major internal damage to warrant a new engine?

My guess is the airflow meter has been damaged by the water and may require cleaning or replacement. How does the car cruise? Is it only having problems higher in the rpm?

As for the vq30det, it is an older design engine but shares the same shape, it will probably drop straight in with no dramas. You will have to run a full standalone emu and manual gearbox to run it though.

Agree you should find out what is wrong first, probably minor. Filter?

Lots of difficulty with the electronics on the VQ30DET conversion. On the V35 they are all tied together through the on board communication system CAN. ie instrument cluster, ABS, body control and power control......

It is illegal to put engine from older generation onto a newer chassis.

Reason is likely that older car was manufactured with less compliant emission - newer engine has better emission than old ones.

you need to be engineered and usually an emission test cost quite literally the cost of an arm and leg that it's only worth to do the swap only if you're doing an off-street race car

If you think your motor is busted, and you have money to blow on a conversion, why not just rebuild your VQ35 properly?

If I was keeping my car, which may end up happening anyway, I would have loved to do a proper all motor build.

to answer your question - yes it will fit. the HV35 is the 3 lt varsion of this car. the 30DET was in a gloria from memory and thats TOTALLY different to what you have in there. electrically different and I dare say a right royal pain in the arse to get going propery due to CAN networks alone.

a second hand 35DE (or get it rebuilt then toss it in - less chance of a hand grenade.) would be a wiser idea.

CEFFYNSW has done a bit of fiddling with his and it was a hair tearing exercise at best.

What sought of $$$$ would i be looking at to do an engine rebuild on the vq35de? maybe a high compression NA build cause it will cost way too much to turbo it and rebuild it. I did think about building an engine but isn't the labor of getting someone to tear down the engine going to cost huge $$$$. I was looking on ebay america and you can get forged internals for $1500 but getting the put in properly is alot of work! if i put in forged internals and bumped up the compression to 11:1 would i need a new ecu. Has anyone actually priced doing an N/A build, my budget for everything (parts&labor) is 10k. And if i am spending that much i want at least 280hp at the wheels and the engine to run like its new. Any good engine builders in sydney?

if you're gonna rebuild it you can either lower the compression and add a TT kit e.g. HKS kit for about $7k plus rebuild.

APS did 350z TT kit for 500HP output and last I checked they asked $17k drive in drive out. was told fully ADR-ed.

It should fit onto VQ35 on V35 as well.

I would imagine rebuilding will fall around $10k more or less without adding FI, either TT or S/C

If it is major, cheapest would be to find a replacement engine.

Guy in Melbourne had a 2006 with 26,000km on it. Have a look at this ebay item 180463507079, had his number but can not find it, has been trying to off load it for some time. Slightly different to earlier models as it will be the rev-up model.

I am a bit weary about buying a used engine because it could very well be a hand grenade and then that would be a big waste of $$$$ i would prefer to spend the extra and get a rebuild, and while they have cracked the engine open i might as well get some good high compression na internals, i am not looking for 500rwhp cause with the amount of money i want to spend it wouldn't be a reliable 500rwhp this car is daily driven!

I thought that was the concept of buying a second hand donk. buy/strip and redo so its solid. agree with your point on reliabilty. I had my share of tempermental small block chevs and grew tired of it quickly.

We need more information... Location? is the car manual? what ecu are you planning on running?

It wont be legal in Australia to fit a VQ30det but it could work very well as they are an extremely capable engine, it wouldn't be a strait forward swap though.

Cheapest option is to slap a VQ35de back in there...

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
