Hi

am about to start shopping for a GTR this weekend :(

I understand GTR's come with T28 turbo's but not all models are ball bearing units.

Can anyone pls shed which which year models had the old school T28's and which ones came with the ball bearing versions of the T28?

Also, what sort of "flaws" should I look out for or common faults with the R33 models?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks and Happy New Year all.

Hi 8thSIN,

all I can say is "Good Luck" in finding a half decent GTR. The only thing I would reccomend is getting it checked out by "Someone who really knows" not just someone who thinks they know.

By the way, I think Gerald from ICE Performance is selling his Series 1 GTR Vspec.

I was of the opinion that 33GTR's came with the same ceramic bb turbos. The exception is the n1's which have steel wheel n1 turbos.

As for flaws, well the early 33's have been around for a while. Things like the rubber hoses & pipes in the engine bay get frail and brittle due to heat and age, as well i have seen AFM's become faulty and lean out one bank. Coils can become faulty as well as fuel pumps. Origional kilometers also becomes a problem as the japs love to wind back the clock. Remember this can happen to any and all cars that are becomming older. I dont think there is too many common flaws though, just basic maintenance and attention is required.

Gerald from ICE Performance has an absolute immaculate R33 GTR for sale. This was/is his personal car and is a real stunner. If you are serious about finding a good car at a great price call him on 9512-7591 or 0414-359-888

thanks RedR32. I was under the impression that some early model GTR's (maybe R32's??) came with non-bb turbo's then the later models were updated with ball bearing units. I know that the R32 GTS-T's came with ceramic wheels instead of steel making them frail with anything over 13-14psi.

pity about the "winding back the clock" issue.. yeh I know it's one of their favourite past times, but I hope in finding a late model GTR, it might be more "believable".

Call Gerald. Its midnight purple, stock (except for exhaust) origional kilometers and never crashed. That is guaranteed. Just take it for a spin and you will see im right

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
