Hey guys. I just saw the michellin ad talking about their Tyres saving you on petrol. Not considering them for my skyline but just curious if anyone knows how much of a difference they make? I don't see there being any significant impact based solely on Tyres

sounds like another marketing scam to suck all the hybrid and small car owners

Yeh, super hard tyres with extreme pressure have less rolling resistance, so in theory will save a bit of fuel.

On that note, Mythbusters last night tested the theory of tailgating a truck to save fuel. We all knew it would work, but I was surprised that they achieved nearly 40% fuel saving by following at 10 feet (3m). When they dropped it to 2 feet the fuel consumption actually went up. They claim it was due to the constant modulation of throttle to maintain such a close distance, but I reckon it's because they were almost under the truck so the slipstream hadn't had a chance to properly mix, and they were still getting a lot of "clean" air from under the truck.

Anyway, it was their usual highly questionable testing methods, but made for entertaining viewing anyway (although nothing got blown up, so they must be getting soft in their old age)

yes ^^^^^

but if you follow a truck on say - a highway... your fuel consumption goes down but you gain

stone chips

cracked windscreen

poor visibilty cos can't see past the truck

dangerous

annoying driving behind a truck esp during acceleration

not really worth it to save a few dollars a week!!!!

this is what annoys me - people who can't afford to run a car - yet insist to own a car... why not get a pushbike? or even motorbike?

Der, no shit sherlock. They weren't actually advocating that you should tailgate trucks (in fact quite the opposite). They were testing a myth because it's what they do. You know - myth busters?

If people read my post and want to start tailgating trucks to save money then that's a good thing. It will help clean the gene pool.

derrrr you idiot my name's not ACTUALLY Sherlock it's Rowan!!!!

haha nah i knew that - i'm just saying there's no way you can actually save petrol - if you do it'll cost you in other things

ie

overinflate your tyres will give you great economy... but decreases braking power and makes your wife think you're a bit of a cunt

ROFL - thanks for the coffee all over my keyboard

True - people will try all sorts of stuff to save a few $, like people who drive 4 suburbs to a servo because their petrol is 0.5c cheaper than the servo down the road.

    • Well, this is probably where a wiring diagram and a multimeter come into play.
    • I can say to anyone thats doing this; having done a number of R clusters; just be careful if its an unknown cluster.  It takes a bit of force to pull up; but if it feels excessive then its probably stuck. I've had this and pulled the entire hair spring out; and I can tell you; its not easy getting the correct spring replacement with the correct inner diameter and winding. In my case someone had used some sort of adhesive to stick it to the spindle and it pulled the whole spindle out; which the force seperated the hairspring from the spindal and caused it to deform.  You may have to clean it (IPA); or in my case if i'd known i should have used some sort of solvent on it.  Also check out Cruizin Central on eBay. He does all sorts of dials; and you can email him with any custom designs you want. So if you want like certain logos etc...he'll send you a mock of what it will look like then you accept the order and he'll take care of the rest. Fantastic dials and he can do basically any design you want.
    • Have you confirmed its the actual axles? Also the wheel bearings that mount on the hubs to hold the axles wear out. I replaced mine as they got play in them. It sorted my play issue.
    • Ive converted a few clusters for the R33 with 320km/h dials. On the back there are some pads which can be bridged or unbridged (using solder or wick braid) to calibrate it. There is one bridge which is for MPH <> KPH; and there are combinations of bridges to offset it. There is probably a diagram  For example; this is my conversion for a 180km/h dial to a 320km/h dial (I put custom GT-R dials on it with the GTS25t layout) If you have J2 soldered (assuming the S clusters have a similar config to the R clusters); you may need to remove that solder
    • Back on topic 😉, these are some of the notable pages from the booklets that are supplied with each weekly parts update. I never knew the BNR32 test mule car had an S13 Silvia front end... *Edit: On closer inspection the test car still had the R32 body, but only the front end had Silvia panels etc.
