G'day

Friend of mine has an R33 GTST, recently he's been having issues starting it. Hot or cold, it does the same thing.

Turn key, tries to start and doesn't. Turn key again, hold accelerator on and it starts. Idles fine and it's all go after then.

We have:

Changed spark plugs

Changed the air filter

Cleaned the MAF sensor

Cleaned the throttle body

Changed oil + water

Replaced any hoses with small cracks (just in case)

Now I've heard alot of cleaning the AAC valve, so I will give that a try next. I also plan to change the fuel filter but I'm not too sure that will change things.

The other problem which may add to this is the alternator belt makes a loud squealing sound when the engine is cold, after it heats up it's fine. I haven't attempted to tighten this, someone else tightened it by simplying turning the nut on the front of the alternator but I wasn't sure if that was the way to do it or not.

Other than that, I'm at a loss and I can't think what the problem could be. He's not too mechanically minded so that's why I'm posting it all up for him.

I was going to suggest the AAC valve..

might be buggered all together but.. normally dirty ones will make it hunt..

But then if it idles all right it might not be.. ??? worth cleaning anyway..

Are you sure an injector(s) is not leaking. I too have this but my car must sit for about 12 hours before anything like the shudder only because my leak is so small at the moment. If it happens all the time it must be a bad leak!

The ACC probily wont have a thing too do with it because if it was falty it would continue too do it rather than stop after you accelerate. The only other thing i can think of is the cold start regualtor (under the stock throtle body) that may need a clean if the vavle is sticking. But my 2 cents are with the injectors

How can we test if the injectors are stuffed? Or is that something that a workshop would need to look at.

I'll have a look at the cold start regulator, but it still does it when the car is warm so maybe not that. Worth a look though.

What do you mean by making it hunt?

I'm talking about idle hunting.. will rev up and down continuously on idle..

I don't think thats ur problem... if it still does it when warm (can you turn the car off and start it or do u need throttle??), I don't think it would be an injector..

yeah you have too get a pressure test done on the injectors (anyone who cleans them professionaly should also pressure test them aswell).

He will need $2900 if he wants too do it at home :)http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Ultrasonic-Fuel-Inj...=item3ef625efed

There are cheepo ways of doing it but dont risk blowing yourself up by fiddling with the fuel rail and ignition (a lot of americans have DIY for that :))

Im Almost positive its injectors because it does it when its warm. When you put the ignition on it pressureises a fuel system by priming the pump and the discription fit because i think one of the injectors is leaking heavily when he pressurises the fuel system

Could be an air temp sensor problem.

Is your mate running a pod? If he is - air temp sensor may have been disconnected.

Another problem could be a faulty tPS (Throttle Position Sensor)

He still has the MAF behind the pod filter, where is the air temp sensor located?

I'm not sure if this will have anything to do with it, but when we changed the plugs a few days ago, there was a bit of liquid around the edges of where the plugs would sit, looked like watery oil? Possibly a stuffed head?

Fiddling with the injectors and the fuel rail sounds out of my league so if it ends up pointing to that we'll take it to the experts.

Car doesn't idle hunt, it did when he blew an intercooler pipe though. We've fixed that problem.

As far as I know, turning the car off and then starting it again we still require use of the accelerator. I will also look at the throttle position sensor when I next get a look at the car.

Thanks for the help so far.

It's located in a GTR.

You'll have a bit of trouble finding one in a 33 GTSt.

I tried the suggestion you gave me (turning key to on and letting it sit for 5 secs) - didn't change anything car still does same thing.

I will have a look at the AAC and TPS this weekend.

Same thing happened to me the other day, I thought there was something wrong with my car coz it only started when I used the accelerator. Turns out it was only the battery going flat. Could it be something simple like that? Sorry noob stupid answer I know :)

I replaced the battery and it fixed the problem for a few days then it went back to normal. My guess is the alternator is about to die;

sorry about the late replies.

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
