Hey guys,

My mate has just bought an R32 off a member on here, and we went and picked it up today after it had passed the pits. Drove it from Morley to Chidlow fine, no dramas, everything was sweet. But then as we were heading back down the hill, we went over a very slight bump in the road, enough to jolt the car a bit but nothing major... and the whole car cut out. Headlights, engine, everything. Came to a stop and tried to start the car again, nothing, completely dead, doesn't even turn over or click.

First thought was instantly "battery lead has become disconnected". So popped the bonnet, but the leads are all fine, securely fastened. Got my mate to try to start the car, and the negative terminal connection sparked quite badly but nothing else happened.

The fuse box doesn't have a lid, so we don't know which fuses are which. Was pitch black so we didn't just wanna start pulling out fuses randomly. The funny thing is, after awhile we could turn the headlights on again, and the interior lights came on. But then i tried turning the headlights off and on again, and everything shorted out and turned off again. From then on, everything was dead except the interior light, which came back on about 5 minutes later.

Eventually we just jump started the car and that worked fine, drove it back to my mates girlfriends house and left it there, but as soon as we turned it off it was dead again, wouldn't start. We are going to go down to Battery World tomorrow morning to get the battery tested, so we will see what that shows up. But what could be causing this? Alternator? Coil packs? Bad earth? Fuse?

Thanks a lot for any help, would really highly appreciate it!

Cheers,

Martin

possibly bad earthing thats all i can think of. guess you will find out tomorro during the day, make sure the terminal are tightly on and no corrosion etc etc

Yeh we will check all the fuses, earth connections, all that. If it is something obvious then we will find it, not a problem. But if it is something we can't see like coil packs or something else then we might not find it if we don't know we are looking for it.

Terence you say this happened to you? Which fuses was it that was cracked do you know, was it anything to do with ignition or was it just any old fuse causing problems for everything else?

Cheers for your help guys

In my zed it was the BCM fuse which is a big 40amp fuse. I dont think skylines have that fuse but i may be wrong. It was a hairline crack that i didnt see after so many inspections. Best to run a torch over the fuses to make sure.

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
