Im heading out to my tuner to have another chat with him..i left there last time with thoughts in my head "im going haltech"....i cannot get over the fact that nistune is so friggin cheap......

Im happy to pay whatever for a good solid tune...but the price difference in units + tune is alot to say the least...

I will be running about 300rwkw...

remember with the nistune and the powerFC that you will also need a Z32 AFM if you do not already have one, factor that into the cost vs the other options.

If your tuner is most confident with the haltech units you are probably best going with that.

Depends on what you want to do with engine. If you want a high reving engine for dragracing use (above 6400rpm) and need more rpm points (where ignition timing, amount of fuel injected changes) above 6400rpm, Haltech or PowerFC would be a better choice. If road / racetrack engine and not going to rev above 6400rpm, stock ECU will do the job. Also some aftermarket ECU's like Motec ECU for example is suited to competition use and can change troublesome sensors (CAS, etc) which can't be done with stock ECU, PowerFC ECU (have to run stock sensors, etc). Except for AFM that can be changed to Z32 AFM, etc. Also aftermarket ECU's have onboard boost control, launch control, etc. Just too many features to list.

Usually more rpm points = rpm points closer together and result's in a smoother reving engine due to engine doesn't struggle to rev between rpm points, but takes longer to tune which cost's you $$$.

Stock ECU with 6400rpm / 16 rpm points = rpm point every 400rpm.

PowerFC with 6400rpm / 20 rpm points = rpm point every 320rpm.

Haltech ECU with 6400rpm / 32 rpm points = rpm point every 200rpm

Motec ECU with 6400rpm / 40 rpm points = rpm point every 160rpm.

Can see why Motec ECU is popular on dragracing, racecar, etc engines.

If engine is RB25DET, Haltech, Link or Vi-PEC ECU. Motec ECU if you have the $$$$.

i think i need something in between haltech and power fc! haha, i don't want to run an afm.....i don't even know why...i just want to get rid of it, that, i don't even know why....4inch intake!

Im probably going to just have another chat....power fc is old school technology i would like to try get something newer, my tuner loves the haltech, i haven't read much about link.....thats next on the googles!

powerfc

plug in, drive to tuner and your done

lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of tuners (you can pick best price, best support etc)

simple to use hand controller

lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of documentation (see my sig, powerfc faq and online hand controller emulator)

probably the cheapest from the bunch

be sure to note some points when picking an ECU

the brand of ECU means ZERO when you say you want XYZ rwkw

any ECU option can and will make power, even a remap can make 400rwkw

so ignore "rwkw" as a deciding factor, ie the MOTEC wont make 400rwkw and the powerfc will only make 385rwkw

djetro means map sensor based ECU which guesses engine load from pressure

ljetro means air flow meter (like your stock ecu) which measures air coming into the engine

ljetro is fine in your case and will work, there is no need to change to map sensor to over complexify it or add more cost

# of rev and load points is a pretty minor fact, most of the ECU options have reasonable load points and axis mapping

ie you shouldnt go for XYZ ECU as the load point are 350rpm vs 325rpm - this is a negligable difference for a street car

Mmmmm....I may be wrong but I think you mean you need a Z32 ECU, not AFM, to run a Nistune.

yes if you want to aim for 300rwkw you will need to sell the stock AFM and buy a Z32

but if you want to use a djetro ecu then you need to sell the stock AFM and buy a map sensor

you could sell the stock AFM for $50

and buy a Z32 for around $200

or

and buy a map sensor for around $200

so its much the same really

All these ECUs will do the Job just fine, Nistune is hard to go past with is control and price, Haltech is really something special but over kill, PFC is very good tho I find Djetro versions a pile of crap.

If your Racing Id go Haltech if its a wild streeeter Nistune, PFC are just are much more basic than Nistune but cost 4+ times the price.

ViPEC!

If you have a 33 then I would NOT look past the v44 plug in board. For $1800 it comes with a built in 3bar (absolute) MAP sensor, intake air temp sensor (to correct for changes in air density with temperature) and drops straight in to the factory case. It has a MILLION functions and there is no need to upgrade your MAF.

So when you get a PFC second hand for $1500 and buy a $200 Z32 MAF you are only saving $100 compared to getting the ViPEC brand new. However, they don't come with a hand controller, so if that is your thing then so be it.

It does however come with a USB cord and software so you can link up the the ECU, where as a PFC will need FC pro or datalogit (Extra money) to plug your ECU into your laptop (also uses a serial port instead of usb).

For what the V44 offers and the amount of support I have had so far from Ray, and Guilt Toy I know that I will not be looking anywhere else.

Also, anyone that can tune a link can tune a vipec, so if you are looking for tuners, search for link tuners.

As for the Haltech.....no

i wouldnt pay $1500 for a R33 Powerfc

more like $1100

yes they are no longer made by apexi, but they can be had cheaper than that, ive seen them go for $1050 with hand controller

find some local tuners and get some pricing and find out what they tune

its not good if your local tuners dont know anything about nistune and you have one

same with powerfc, its not good havign a powerfc if all tuners near you dont know how to use it

so be wise check before buying and see what they reocmmend and what price to tune as well

interesting as i reckon the d-jetro its one of the best ecu's around especially on 2JZ, RB AND SR, no dramas with high hp, easy to tune and returns excellent ecomony when tuned right.

Why are Wolfs so bad?

I have had PFC's, Motec, Revo and find that Wolf is as good if not better than any of the others.

Would not liking wolf come down to your lack of knowledge of the product or is is actually based on experience because everyone I know that has a wolf has never looked back.

Having used various ecu's I can personally say coming from a consumer that I would pick wolf again, infact I would go as far as to say considering $$$$ wolf would be my first choice.

Everyone needs to remember that an ecu (the ones mentioned above) is only as good as the person tuning it.

I have Wolf V500 on My Racecar and theres nothing wrong with them, Bit to complicated for many tuners.

Support is not good now so I don't sell them anymore but still a good unit.

Djetros are to hard to pass emission tests and thats now a major factor in WA, Power etc is no problem, reliable emission output is not good.

Ive had 2 and my series 6 was used for the deveopment of thier version 4 (via mildren rotory in adelaide), i have quite a few few reasons for not liking them and continual isues with firmware in my v4 and massive timing drift was only the begining of my hate for them..

My main hate is the large percentage of people who come in with wolf ecu's have bounced from shop to shop trying to get a decent result without getting something they consider up to scratch.

As i said previous i dont waste my time with them, i send them to a wolf dealer and if they are not happy with the results and come back we swap it out for something else.

its only my opinion so either way it makes no difference.

I am also in this situation and i think i am leaning towards the haltech for my 33, had a good talk with both haltech and vipec guys at superlap today and was impressed by the haltech but dno yet have to tlk to some tuners hahaha

    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.  
    • For race cars, this is one part where I find having the roll cage bar having gone through a hole in the floor better than the build it up on a ledge inside... The Merc I help on, the main hoop ends are marked on the car, and the jack is marked... Jack goes under a few inches and lifts one whole side of the car up... Removes that fight for long slim jacks for race car duties!   My biggest issue for the daily drivers I work on, is my jacks don't go high enough. The jacks start out on a few blocks, jack it up, then start a second jack under it on more blocks, and then I can get an axle stand under it. My axle stands are presently in use, and are nearly fully extended. The car is sitting with barely more than a cm of clearance to get the wheel off the studs! Sarah's Kluger is the same, as it has an ungodly amount of droop available in the suspension and a distinct lack of good jacking points!
