Just wondering if any one has been in this position, my phone died last week, didnt know what the problem was, was sitting in the holder in the truck with my fm transmitter charging the phone (have been using it every day for over a month), when i got back in the phone was off and i could not turn it back on again, took it into the apple store on sunday and they gave me a replacement, today (tuesday) i plugged my fm transmitter in and it died instantly, was able to get the apple logo up again but it was flickering and then went off, for the next ten minutes the phone got hotter and hotter (wasnt plugged in) and then held its heat for another 20 minutes before cooling down.

What im interested to know is if anyone else has been in this position and what will apple say when i take it back a second time, would prefer that they didnt send it off to get fixed as it is jail broken and has over 100 apps on there, was wondering if it is worth paying to get it fixed or will they not care and just replace it again, also if i tell them that it was caused by a non apple product will that void the warranty?

Well generally Apple store won't repair it - they should simply give you a new one while the busted one will get fixed and refurbished...if your FM tranmistter has the silly "Made for iPod" and/or "Made for iPhone" on the box it should be sweet..

A friend of mine took his first iphone back because the volume rocker fell off (Apple had a batch of 3G's that the volume rockers weren't glued properly)..His second 3G he had for a week and took it back because the slience switch was very fragile (you can simply touch it and it will go into slient/vibrate mode)....and he got a new one and his was jailbroken.

I mean it doesn't harm to reset it back to normal (when possible) but if it's not turning on...how can they (Apple Store) know it was jailbroken

The jail break is only a problem if they decide that they want to investigate further and send it off to be repaired to see if it was something i caused instead of just replacing it.

Its hard to say if they will send it off or throw it out. If they send it off and find out something non Apple related or that fact that you jail break your iphone then there is no chance that warranty wont be void. Its a bit risky, but if they replaced your first one, who is to say they didnt check that one too? What you could do is play the question, say "it seems like when i plug my iphone charger in this happens, what if i try something like a...." you get my point =p

just flash it with official firmware before giving it to them. The phone's screen doesn't need to be on to get into DFU mode. Put it in DFU, connect it to itunes, download an old firmware (don't update to the latest) and then flash it on.

I've had two iPhones. First one had a crack in the case. Sent away for repair 6 weeks later i got a repaired one. It died in after 24 hours. Back to the store and sent away to be repaired. Got this one and it seems to be playing up. I was told from my insurance ( which is the one that i got with optus ) that once this one is sent away ( three strike rule ) i get a new 3GS replacement.

Hopefully it dies really soon :bunny:

I can only get to the stores on weekends, unlike last time they have no openings on weekends so i rang apple last night went through all there bullshit and played dumb, they never mentioned that the phone was only replaced a couple of days ago and after i did every thing they asked they said it is definately a hardware problem and i could go to a store for replacement or send it in, the 2 options i had for sending it in was either just send it in and they would send out a new one when they get it or another option i have heard of, you pay $39 and they will send you one and you send yours in when you get the new one, the only catch is that when you pay the $39 you also pay another $800 which they will refund when they receive your phone, i wasnt going to risk them finding the jail break and keeping the $800 so i took the first option, now its just wait and see and hope they are unable to start the phone so they just throw it in a pile with the rest and send a new one, either that or the phone is screwed that any memory has been destroyed, either way just a matter of time now, they said it takes 2-5days for them to receive it and another 2-5 days for me to receive a replacement and they will email me when the old one is received and the new one sent, so if it gets to the end of next week and i have not heard anything then i will start getting worried

It wont come up in itunes, nothing works at all, completely dead.

Im hoping that they dont try to repair it.

This is the last paragraph of the email they sent me after going through all the shit on the phone:

You will need to send your IPHONE 3GS to Apple before we can send you a replacement.

If you requested service via the Apple website, please use the Apple shipping label that was provided when your service request was confirmed. Otherwise, please go to this webpage, enter ######## in the Repair ID box, and print the shipping label that is generated.

Please take the shipping label and your IPHONE 3GS to Australia Post. Do not include any other items, such as headphones or a power adapter, as they will not be returned to you. The Australia Post agent will provide the appropriate packaging and send the product to Apple.

WARNING: Apple has discovered that some of the unauthorized unlocking programs available on the Internet may cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software. As part of the service process, Apple will update the software on your iPhone to the latest version. IF YOU HAVE MODIFIED YOUR IPHONE'S SOFTWARE, YOUR IPHONE MAY BECOME PERMANENTLY INOPERABLE WHEN APPLE UPDATES THE SOFTWARE. Making unauthorized modifications to the software on your iPhone violates the iPhone software license agreement, and the inability to use your iPhone due to unauthorized software modifications is not covered under your iPhone's warranty.

I don't think Apple sign off for the all software anymore.

I have an old 3g 8gig, jailbreak n unlock. Its been a year now without any issues accept for once in a while it dies for 2-3 minutes, almost like it need it a rest lol but that because i used Blackra1n and this software is not as stable as the official Iclarify one.

I also have a 3gs 32gig jailbreak with the new spirit, works like a charm but i'm selling it now so i can buy an Ipad.

I don't know why you're going through such hassle,

My Boss has a 32gig 3gs, jailbreak as well. One day he dropped it on carpet floor, no external damage whatsoever YET the phone die lol. We took it back to Chadstone and got new replacement straight the way. They'd probably use it for spare, they won't waste time investigate.

Yeah actually now that you mention it, the girl who served me sat there telling me how if anything happens to it just come back for a replacement. Chadstone is either just handing them out or i really don't know what is going on... maybe she just into me.. ;)

As a conclusion i sent the phone to apple on wednesday the 26th, according to there web site they received it and diagnosed the problem on the 1st and sent out a replacement on the 2nd which i received today (the 4th), when i spoke to them on the phone they said it would be 4-10 days (2-5days each way) and it took 7 (working) days with no charge for postage, in hind sight i probably should have taken it into an apple store but all is good now and i have broken it and restored everything.

If any one bricks theres and is worried about apple being able to get it started let me know, i have a device that will kill it instantly and make sure they will never get it started again :)

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Comparison of the 2: Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.
