hey,

i just bought an R32 GTST type-M with Hicas.

The vehicle drives and handles quite well untill you hit approx 80km/h then it developes a really bad shaking through the steering wheel. Sometimes it is fine untill i hit a bump and then it starts. Also when you are braking you can feel it through the pedal.

I have been underneath the car and had a look to see if any of the bushes have any obvious wear out of them, but all appears fine. I know the shocks were shagged so i have changed them and put coilovers in and it still happens.

I have rotated rims front to back. Still happens.

Im thinking the tie rod ends may be knackered? But any input would be greatly appreciated.

cheers Ben

Get the suspension checked out, could be tie rods, or your wheel alignment could be totally fuba, amongst other things. I had wheels shake on my front at around 100kms/hr. Turns out both from wheels were out 30gs each. Balanced problem solved.

Have you got hub locator rings or do the wheels fit the hob correctly?

Have you taken your wheels to a tyre place to check that they are all balanced correctly?

How is your tyre ware, all even

It could be your tie rod ends, ball joints or wheel bearings?

I would suggest taking it to a tyre/suspension place to get it checked it out

mate if you can feel it through braking

your discs may be warped

i had the same problem, and i replaced my rotors and pads and the problem was gone

if you cant afford to replace rotors n pads then, ask a shop to machine the rotors, its much cheaper

let us know how it goes

i had a very similar problem on my 34, checked all the same things - turned out to be that one of my front brakes were sticking (seized) on and often wouldnt start to shake until it got up to speed, jack the front up and see if its difficult to turn the wheel by hand

i got a wheel alignment done today, and the shake is still there ay 80km/h now but i can accelarate through it and now it doesnt do it under brakes.

I think im going to change the tie rod ends anyway as they are quite old, so ill see what happens when i do this. I checked the steering arms and these are all straight and the wheels all turn freely.

Also i just chucked in a Hicas lock bar which instantly made it better even without the alignment. So next im going to get the wheels balanced.

Get the wheels balanced. Also get them to check for any deformity in the rim (slight buckle) that a wheel alignment may not pick up too well.

Doesn't sound like tie rods, as you'll get it shaking under heavy braking.

:woot:

    • I can get more photos of it here soon and I plan to make a thread detailing the process. I received the car this way and it sorely needs refinishing. That is probably the most appealing photo of it. Up close it is fading, cracked, and needs to be re-glued. Depending on their condition I'm on the fence between refinishing or making a new set.  Another angle hiding the pimples and razor pumps
    • According to this thread the RS4V with build plate RC40 comes with the R200 diff @ 4.083 ratio as well (mine has said RC40 denotation). We may need to check if the axle stubs are the same pattern as well. The auto subframes have longer axles. However I think yours being a later Series 2 as well, we should have the same bolt pattern for the diff stubs. Unless your upgraded rear also has upgraded axles. Either way, I would not be opposed to pulling the covers to check so I can inspect that  fancy rear core  Also I don't have HICAS. I don't believe that should change things but I hope the people here with heaps more experience than me can correct me if I'm wrong   Let me know if you want to attempt to make this work and I can get some pictures of mine from under the car.
    • It's not that straightforward. For example I have had this code because my ignitor/power transistor wires were unplugged. It knows something is wrong but has no idea what it means. If you want to actually diagnose this I recommend following the service manual flowchart for code 21. Ohm out the harness, coilpacks, inspect the ECU, etc. And again, it's entirely possible for there to be no problem at all but if you're running a different coilpack it'll trigger the code because it doesn't like what it sees.
    • If it (the code) wasn't still current, it should have gone away by itself by now. No, nothing it 10/10. But it is quite likely. Everything else to do with the ignition could still be responsible (which is wires and connectors). The car is an old piece of shit now, so all the wires and connectors are also old pieces of shit.
