always seemed around 55-60 to me..

You have to take into consideration that when the needle reads "E" the tank isn't actually empty. that will explain why when you fill up you only put in 55 to 60. if the tank was completely empty when it read "E" so many more people would have been stranded at the side of the road.

i don't know the exact values for the R33, but in my old 180sx, in the user manual it actually told you that on "F" there was 57L in the tank, half was 27L and the "E" mark meant that 7L was left.

(don't know what the obsession with 7 was, but meh).

i always thought that the 180sx had a 55L tank. the 57 probably meant that was the total if the filler neck was full as well.

and r33 tank is 65L. fuel light will generally come on with about 8 to 10L to go. that way you still have enough fuel to get to a servo before it runs out.

Do you guys know if the fuel light is connected to the fuel gauge so that it comes on depending on the needle or is the light hooked to a separate sensor that determines when the petrol is at a certain level? because my fuel gauge is wrong at the moment since when I mucked around with the cluster set it in the wrong postion

It was probably something like that... i was just reading out of the service manual, and it says at full is 57.6L but i guess the don't specify how full is 'full'. either way.

i would imagine that the warning light and the gauge run off the same sensor (cheaper to do) but i don't think the light would be based on the gauge. they would both 'look' at the sensor signal but would have a separate way of dealing with it.

the low fuel lamp and the gauge have nothing to do with each other. my low fuel warning light sometimes comes on with the needle just above empty. I can consistently drive the car until the needle is below empty and then put 55L of fuel in it.

As an experiment I ran the car dry once, the low fuel light was still coming on and going off even when the car started to stutter because the tank was bone dry. i put 61L of fuel into it on that occasion, it almost stalled pulling into the servo. Under normal running by ignoring the light and watching the gauge I consistently put between 55L and 58L into the car.

The most I have ever put in my car is 63L after pushing the trip odometer to 601.2kms and I could feel it was about to run out of fuel, so I'd say 65L sounds about right. If I refuel when the needle is on empty it will put in around 50L of fuel, and if I wait for the fuel light to start flashing consistantly it'll take around 55-56L

    • Sorry to hear your HFM BM57 was faulty,  did you contact HFM I would hope they would be at least grateful for the information if there was some sort of manufacturing fault, you would hope they would be sympathetic even if your item was 2 years old if it had never been fitted. May I ask where it leaked from ?
    • Cats are called Bella, and Donna...  Like that poisonous plant And I remember your 2 monsters, I remember making a little bit of wee when you let them out... LOL I have already installed cat doors into the laundry where their kitty litter is, and the sun room, apart from the cat doors there's not going to be any permanent mounted stuff on the interior walls (interior doors are cheap and easy to replace) I will get a outdoor cat cage thingie once I finish the landscaping out back... https://catnip.com.au/ The only off limit areas are the main bedroom and the gym room....but, currently the cats are curled up in bed, in the main bedroom with the Mrs.....LOL, the off limits for the kittens to the main bedroom lasted about 5 minutes with Jackie I currently only have 1 free standing huge cat tree multiple level scratching post thingie in the lounge room, but, I will be getting another one soon now that I'm happy with the furniture layout in the back room and have a perfect spot for it
    • All of this is making it seem clear that running the Coppermix twin was definitely the way to go, especially in hindsight with how insane tariffs have gotten and the strength of the USD vs yen at the time.
    • That sounds like no chance of even importing one for road registering then Now I see why Duncan wants to check LHD rules for Targa...   I wonder how "bolt in" the AWD would be if you got one imported from the US and swapped it to an AUD one
    • Not to mention they drive like a bucket of bolts! yuck!
