Hey guys,

Highly likely I will be buying a freshly imported car very soon. Car has just landed in Oz and will soon be in the compliance shop. Buying through an import broker in VIC. He mentioned that the car won't have any rego but it will be complied. He can organise a permit so I can drive the unrego'd car from VIC to SA.

My question is when I am ready to get the car rego'd in SA, does it have to go through Regency (pits) or just an ID check? I know that if the car was rego'd in a different state eg. VIC/NSW in someone's name, it only has to go through the ID section and not pits. I personally went through this process myself approx 4 months ago.

I've tried to do a search but couldn't find any specific answers. There are plenty of info on swapping rego from different state but nothing on a car that has never been rego'd before.

How does it work when a car is complied in SA? Does the car go through Regency pits to get rego'd? Or is the pits purely for defects?

It's essentially an unregistered vehicle I would think, Transport SA website comes to hand here:

... doesn't say anything about pits - maybe ring 'em up and double-check though?

It probably meets the criteria for a tier-2 vehicle inspection though ...

I will give them a buzz tomorrow, thought I would post something online in case someone has gone through this exact process.

I went on the sa.gov website tonight but couldn't find a clear answer. It kind of reads that if the car has no rego, you just simply do the following thigs-

Step 1: Download and complete an application for registration and third party insurance Step 2: Return the completed application to a Service SA customer service centre.

But not sure if it is really going to be this easy... I bloody hope it is :ninja:

Thanks for the reply Damo. Is it possible for compiance workshop to let some things slip??? I found out the car has coilovers but he (import broker) said that they would stay on and would not be taken off. I was under the impression that the coilys had to be removed for complaince.

I am assuming any dodgy activity would mean removal from RAWS?? or penalties at least??

Not usually - RAWS workshops are EXTREMELY careful and anal about a car being roadworthy and completely 100% stock at compliance, otherwise they lose their accreditation (and subsequent livelyhood). But things have been known to slip through. My understanding was that brake pads were to be changed and brand new tyres fitted, but neither of these things happened with my R34 nor V35.

Transport SA will take it gospel that your car is 100% stock and roadworthy, so unless you have obvious illegal mods it will just be an identity check, unless they find something obviously amiss. that was the case when I brought in my R34 a few years back anyhow.

just to clarify

tyres need to be changed for the sole reason they do not have the ADR values imprinted on the sides

if you get pinged for brake pads, I would ask the cockhead in question for a micrometer

as nobody, bar a qualified mechanic, is going to know if it needs replacing or not

I was told by the compliance workshop that the R34 had to have BRAND NEW tyres fitted - couldn't even have 2nd hand Aus tyres for compliance. Various things happened (including the workshop owner committing suicide WHILE they had the car) and they ended up passing it without new tyres.

I was also told that the compliance workshop HAD to install brand new brake pads as part of the compliance process - but maybe it is a myth.

having a car complied has nothing to do with getting a car inspected. doesnt matter where the complience was done.

complience is getting the car up to aus road safety standards with parts that dont come in the car standard in japan etc

when your ready to get the car rego'd, you take it to regency park vis and they go over the whole car like they would it was defected so your best bet is to make it stock, clean and ready to inspection.

edit: i passed with tyres from japan and didnt change the brake pads as both were good but best bet is to check both items and make sure they are up to standards like wear etc also check bushes

Agreed, being complied doesnt mean it's been through Vic roads and been given an import plate/paper etc. It just means it's ready to go through SA pits, if it's a vehicle thats been imported under the 15yo rule or 18 yo rule (what ever it is know) be careful as Vic ans SA have a few different regulations, the main one being Vic doesnt need side intrution bars where as SA does along with the engineers report.

*Sigh* I'm supposed to be on holidays...

If it has come in under SEVS, then it will need to be stock standard when it goes for the ID check, and will need to have brand new tyres. If not be prepared to get sent over the pits and raped by TransportSA.

If it's a pre-89 import, it will be going over the pits.

PS If your import broker knew sh*t from clay, he should've already advised you of all this.

I'm in the same boat, just picked up my v35.

Spoke to a dude at DETI and they advised that its ID check only. (Obviously they will be also looking for defect items but its not their primary concern).

If everything is stock or within compliance there should be no reason for them not to pass u.

Will let yas know if i have any troubles after the ID check.

    • One thing I can tell you is, do it properly the first time. If you encounter unexpected problems just let the car sit for a week or two if you have to get some other parts or figure stuff out.  I'd have said go and use as many OEM parts as possible but since you want to change the turbo later on a custom kit is probably the better choice. Since I have no experience with RB25 just compare parts diagrams and images before buying a line kit and it should be easy to see if it has everything you need. Amayama has very good parts diagrams and part number lists, that is what I used a bunch to figure out what I might need. And don't forget to plan ahead and possibly renew other stuff that's easy to get to while you're in there doing the turbo lines. Happy wrenching
    • Update 4:   Hi all, good news. Engine is running and all the gaskets and seals seem to be working as intended. No leaks so far, even the JB Weld seems to hold. I flushed out the old coolant a few times and put in fresh coolant, not Nissan stuff, I decided to try the Ravenol Protect FL22, they claim it works for a wide variety of JDM cars and the opinions on it by some people were pretty good. And it has the nice poison green color! And man am I glad I bought a coolant system tester earlier this year, vacuum filling works wonders on this engine. I can definitely recommend this to anyone still doing it the old school way. All you need is compressed air supply. Will have to do a small test drive as soon as I can, I removed the gauge cluster again as the tacho needle was still bouncing around a bit but it was much better than before already.  I also found some cracks on all 4 tires inner and outer sidewalls. Apparently these tires should 't be parked on for extended periods or be kept under 0 degrees during storage, which I did not know. Clearly the previous owner didn't look into those details either, he probably bought them just cause they are cool semi-slicks. I'm just wondering how tf I am supposed to reach 30-80 degree tire temperatures on the public road consistenly, these tires were never going to work for my use case. I'll probably order Continental SportContact7 ones as these are the best allround summer tire available right now and I don't think I'll need anything crazier for now. Do let me know if you have experience with various tires and which ones you recommend.
    • You have no idea how many goddamn boxes I received these past three months haha Most have been put to use by now though, luckily
    • Not going to pretend I didn't do a bit of junky work this time around, but mostly due to the fact that some things I am not willing to spend days fixing right now, like wiring. I try to do most things properly the first time around.
    • Regardless of neglect or incompetence, fixing either is tedious and annoying. Most of the neglect on my car is definitely rust. I hope I can at least pass inspections later on and they won't fail the car due to slightly corroded hardlines. I was generous with rust converter and wax and it looks ok, most lines in the rear are hard to see properly anyways.  Definitely will test them though to make sure they don't rupture under pressure, in that case the car isn't going anywhere this year.
