Hey guys

ive got an r33 rb25det, 3076R

ive just thrown on my plasmaman and am looking at upgrading to a 6 boost manifold.

i'm upgrading my rear housing on my 3076 to .84

and have the option of going external or internal gate

the best option seems to be external gate with the 6 boost, with a decent wastegate.

i'd prefer to keep internal gate. if i can get a similar result. without many hassles

does anyone know anybody that has done this already? am i wasting my time?

looking to hit high 200's with this setup.

You seem to have answered your own question. From a technical perspective, a manifold that allows more efficient flow and cylinder scavenging is the thing to have.

Also an external gate properly set up will offer better venting and boost control.

There was a comment from Al who wants to go to virtually the type of turbo system you ask about, from an IW, collector style manifold on the basis of boost control and efficiency. That would/could open up the option of using split pulse too.

But there are many people easily achieving 400 rwhp +/- 15 using OEM manifold and IW turbine. A very tidy result at significantly less outlay. And it works superbly on a street car. If you were keen and capable, it is possible to smooth some internal sharp edges/restrictions in the OEM manifold too. Unknown exactly how much advantage this gives, but every little bit would help.

If you were chasing higher hp and using a GT35 turbo, then I'd have no hesitation in going 6boost + EW.

For me it's a question of performance target and budget.

I think provided you supported the turbocharger/dump pipe/exhaust system with factory style bracing a cleaned up std exhaust manifold would work fine . You have one already and it will look more factory obviously because it is , if you can use some of the std heat shielding more of the above .

Exotic manifolds are nice but the exercise can be involved and expensive for a road car , plenty of people here have simply bolted those turbos with a spacer on the std manifold and got more than adequate squirt from the retuned engine .

Real good bang for buck and if for any reason you had to return the car to std its a lot less work to do so .

The main factor that i am interested in going to a 6 boost style manifold is that i love the look of the turbo sitting up high.

plus its only $500 for the manifold, aswell as my own time in fitment and fabrication.

i know i can get the same result from the standard exhaust manifold and keep internal gate,

i honestly didn't think that i am forced to go "external gate" just to use a 6 boost.

You probably wont be for long when he finds out you are telling people you got it that cheap.

I also recall they can be made with no gate extension.

who ever said that i would be getting one new off 6 boost.?

buying one that was bought for a project but never used.

    • Yes to both! Yes to standard ECU and tune, but exhaust is aftermarket. Unsure on brand. Actually have it sitting in at my desk haha! I have to set it up on my laptop but this is a great next step, will do. So I generally try to shift before 4.5K RPM most times. I largely don't do a lot of high-rev driving, but I will take it up to red 1-2x a week max, as I know the occasional "Italian tune-up" is good for these cars.  Oh wow, is this way better than what I'm getting. Does this mean there's a good chance I have an issue?   Thanks for all the info so far guys.
    • Old Son, did you re-use the Holden ABS in the new shell or try a different module?
    • Yeah, nah. I had the actuator rod off it today. The arm will not move at all. Neither out, nor in. Yeah, you'd think so, but I've been thinking about that. Even when the actuator rod fell all the way off at the beginning of this saga, it would build more boost and faster in lower gears than it would in higher gears, and you'd think that that was the opposite of what should happen. But I strongly suspect that there is a thing with the gearing getting the revs to rise faster, that there must be some transient effect with the gas flow rate rising quickly, that you don't get with the more steady state case of the higher gears. Keep in mind - the gate is not shut in either of my weirdnesses. So things are not "normal". We normally think about a turbo spooling up (below the wastegate target) with the gate shut. I have all sorts of mental models running now where the gate is a little bit open, and having it stuck open allowing gas out while it should be going through the turbine has all sorts of weird effects (in these mental models). I'm thinking in the higher gears, the ex mani pressure builds to the point where enough gases spill out the wastegate to just prevent the pressure rising much more at all, or just creeping up, all the whole the revs are increasing and getting closer to the point where a gear shift becomes necessary.
    • Is it possibly wastegate actuator itself is sticking, or even the rod to flapper? Otherwise I reckon things are getting a bit rusty/worn   Also odd it won't boost in 3rd to 5th, but will in 1st, I'd expect the other way around with it slightly open as there's more time on your way to redline for it to spin up
    • Does anyone know ow what these two plugs are for and if they should be unplugged? Just put the dash back together and can't remember if these were plugged in before or unplugged! (Blue and white plugs) 🤦🏽‍♂️
