lol.. funny you should say that as when I was 16.5yrs old i was driving around mum and dads L300 4WD Mitsi express van. It was a yellow lunch box looking one.

After 2wd burnouts we planned to tie to a tree and drop burn outs but never got around to it as a balance shaft ceased up when the oldies were driving it :P Lucky me. :)

bad news Joel/Matt - as you would probably know I blew my clutch last week before/at the drags .... I thought I had an Exedy/Extreme Single Plate Organic clutch, but when they pulled it out it turns out it was a 6 puck cushion button (sounds similar to what you are getting/have got) .... and I blew it in under 20,000km with most of those kms only being 160rwkw. Yes I do drive the car for work so it gets a lot of shit all day with thousands of stops and go's (and 2 trips out to the drags - around 20 runs all up but no slipping until last week), but nevertheless it still went within 20,000km. I now am the proud owner of an Exedy Twin Plate clutch from Morpowa and it's bitey, but excellent - I can even get 4th gear chirps now :D .... just a word of warning to the wise anyhow.

I can't wait to see all these new beasts prowling the street!

What was it that blew on the clutch? The pressure plate?

Mine has 9 puks on one side then 9 on the other side.

So I guess that would be a 9 puk clutch?

What did the twin set you back? $2400?

I did look at the twin but couldn't afford it as the motor has nudged over $4000 with all the other little parts etc I've had to buy. Especially still being at Uni.. Lol..

my cefiro goes in on monday to have the sr 20 fitted with the t518z 10 cm I will be very curious to see how it performs in comarison to you rb 25/30 mine wont make full boost til 4k rpm I prefer it that way for day to day driving.

my aim is some where down in the 12's with the setup time will tell.

are you going to run a rb 25 box joel or jsut the 20 one ?

I;m also consdering the clutch issue i ahve been offered a twin plate and I'm wodering wheter to take it I would prefer a more gentil take up.

here is the dyno graph of the turbo not 300 rwkw of course but on a built motor I belive 280 is doable @ high boost.

Thanks for the info Andy. I'm pretty kind on clutches so I 'may' get away with a few more k's than you did mate. 20k for me is 2-3yrs driving too :rolleyes: Do you know what the pressure plate was rated at on your old 6 puck? My 9 puck is clamped by an 1100kg p/plate.

I think it was only about 690kg from memory Matt - I wanted very light and streetable, and it was the same as the oem clutch. I guess it kinda makes it clamp softer, so it let go easier - but in the end they all go sooner or later.

Fyi I am getting quite used to the twin plate already - only stalled it twice on the cruise today, but sometimes my foot just happens to slip off too quick and you well know the result of that! :D

I'm going to use the RB20t box until it goes. I'm interested to see how it holds the power with a set of 225's on the rear. From what I've seen from others the rb20t box's only seem to go when slapping a set of sticky tyres behind them and making over 200rwkw. Unless of the box was on its way out anyhow which mine is. (loud input shaft bearing noise + whining through the gears)

Might even give the RB20t box a rebuild my self and see how it holds up. Providing I don't strip gears & only do a bearing.

Joel - clutch will be fine

Both myself and Freebaggin have had the same clutch for over 12 months with no probs. I have the cushioned ceramic multi button clutch with the heavy pressure plate (1090kg from memory)

Mine has done 30,000+km at 200rwkw, seen off 4 sets of tyres (one set was a set of RE55S semislicks), 15 1/4 mile passes, a Mallala track day, 30+ dyno runs and driven to and from work - 45km per day in traffic, and its still feels really good. RB20 gearbox is starting to get a little crunchy now though!

Freebaggins has endured similar punishment, but he has had his a little longet than me

I guess its like anything though, people have good runs and bad runs with certain products, just down to the individual and there driving style

Mine as well as Freebaggins is being used in conjunction with a lightweight cromoly flywheel, not sure if this helps or not, but if anything the cromoly would be harder on the clutch material than the original cast iron flywheel

Not sure. Andrew checked out the head with regards to oil feed (block feed restrictor) and oil return from the head, and he seems to think the head I have won't have a problem.

Could it be that the hi-po RB26's spin over at a much higher RPM causing the problem?!?! Higher crank rpm should equal higher oil flow?!?! or doesn't it work like that?

So what exactly is this problem you are talking about?

The motor dumps all the oil in the head causing oil surge and bugger all oil in the sump?

A standard RB26 pumps too much oil up around the camshafts at high rpm, which doesn't leave enough oil down in the sump and can lead to oil starvation during high cornering loads at high rpm, even with sump baffle plates. (i.e. track situations) An oil gallery restrictor restricts how much oil is pumped around the head and leaves more in the sump.

The RB30 had 2 oil gallery restrictors that were 1.4mm dia internal. The RB20DET of Darrens was approx 2.5mm dia internal. Due to our heads being Non-VCT we had the restrictors drilled out to 2.5mm. From memory the VCT head's block has oil restrictors of 2.8mm dia internal. I can't remember if both restrictors were 1.4mm dia on the RB30 block or if andrew drilled out both to 2.5mm. I'll have to ask.

I'm using a RB25DET pump Darren is using a RB20DET pump.

Has anyone tried restrictors on an HiPo RB25DET ?? I understand that not neccessary due to the differences in soild vs hydrolic lifters ??? Not sure on this though.

I find that interesting..

I believe the problem occurs during constant high revs, where the quantity of oil pumped to the head can’t escape back to the sump quickly enough to keep the sump at a level sufficient for high cornering loads. I believe the GTR has one oil feed blocked all together and the second feed is restricted (not sure what the restricted size is). I hear that drilling the oil return out to a larger diameter and/or creating an extra return to the sump can help solve this as well. I wish we had a definitive answer for this.

Also, can I PM one of you guys about City Dismantlers. I am considering rebuilding my GTR engine there and would like to ask some question and compare notes.

Picked the motor up today. :)

Was packaged nicely on a pallet in bubble wrap.

Still have a few bits to finish off.

Clean up the manifold ports a little more bolt everything on, get my self a damn bolt for the cam gears that must have been sucked up by the hoover.

Mod the cam belt covers etc.

    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
