It was shaping up to be a top Australia Day, and was driving around getting everything ready for a big day down at the river. An ill fated trip to the local service station really ruined my day though.

I was stopped out the front waiting for oncoming traffic to pass and ive looked in the mirror and saw the swift coming down the road and all i could see of the driver was the top of her head as she was busy fiddling with the stereo or phone or some shit, so she got the surprise of her life to find her swift parked into the back of my car.

I'm really kicking myself that i didnt make it to Putty Road Cruise now

The damage looks worse the further i look, after lifting up the boot carpet, the floor of the boot looks like the fkn Alps and it has a big crumple in the rear quarter. The panel beater that it is at at the moment waiting to be looked at by an assesor has told me that they will probably call it a write off. I have also been informed that if they do write it off i will recieve a market valua payout and i will get to keep the car as well. orrrr if it gets fixed im always gona know that its had some pretty extensive damage so it will always bug me.

does anyone know what the market value is for a 98 model, manual, turbo, in vgc is? or where i could find out?

i spoke to my insurer to find out wat market value would be and they said they have no idea lol

personally am hoping it will be repaired because i love my car and id hate for there to be one less skyline in the world

thanks heaps, i thought t would only be about 15k

Get your insurance company to name a value before you suggest the red-book value.

Red-book.com says that my gtr is worth ~$40K, but my insurance company's set market value in the event of a rideoff is well above this.

cheers

If your insurance will pay you market value and also let you keep the car, honestly, I would be hoping for a write-off.

I know there's sentimental value and all that but strategically, you could be better off.

Sorry to hear about it mate, that looks like a pretty serious biff. Hope you don't have any pain in your neck or anything (physical pain anyway)?

I'd also be hoping for a write-off. It'll never be the same. :/

All the best with it mate, let us know how it goes. I assume the girl has insurance? There are few things worse than that split second where you can see the inevitable disaster but there's nothing you can do to stop it...

Oh and

after lifting up the boot carpet, the floor of the boot looks like the fkn Alps

Lol

thanks heaps for the replies guys, i will try contacting the nrma to get an exact figure out of them and whether they will let me keep the car or not..but yall are definately right, i wouldnt wana keep it now unless they do the best damn job of fixing it ive ever seen, but i doubt it  just really don t wana get ripped off when i didnt do anything wrong ay, luckily neither me or my little sister were hurt but it scared the hell out of her coz she didnt see it coming.

i had a look on carpoint etc last night and manual turbo gtt in similar condition to mine are still selling for 18500 to 19500 which is the same as what i paid, dont know if this means anything when it comes to an insurance pay out though...

^^^ no exaggeration ;)

Crumple zone did its job then. Glad you and passenger came out alright.

yeah we were fine thanks, and the car did do exactly what it was supposed to so cant complain too much : )

quote came back today at $14, 960 which only includes a partial paint job so the car would be two different colours ( 3 if u include the black bonnet) i told the panel beater itd look like shit without a full respray and he didnt deny it lol...he also checked up the market value through one of his resources and it came back as 16,800- 18,200.

Assesment is due to be done early next week so we'll see how it goes.. thanks for the comments guys

Yeah I hear ya. That's they're job aye. Insurance companies are a bunch of Cunny Funts.

They charge you an arm and a leg for insurance and when it comes for them to pay up, its harder than getting blood from a stone!

so is there some way of appealing how much they decide to pay me out without it going to court or anything? like am i able to just say i dont think its a fair amount? im expecting to hear back from them tuesday/ wednesday ish after the report i done...latest ive heard is that they can call the car a write off, only pay me what it would cost to fix it and then give me the car.. that sounds like apretty shit deal to me..thanks for the help guys

  • 2 weeks later...

jeez that little swift done some damage there the side of it is hanging out that is definately a write off and to tell you honestly i had a r34 with the exact same of accident the boot was stuffed underneath was pushed in except the side was not whacked out my insurer said to me when they had a look at it that u could have it as a write off or keep it and fix it which i did coz it wasnt too bad but they told me if they wrote it off that they would give me that extra $4,000 on top of it of the price that i paid which was the market value. The r34 that i bought was a gt-v which is non turbo i bought it for $20,000 that time and when i quoted it they would pay me out for $24,000 so really they should be paying you out a fair amount of money it really depends how nrma is because im with justcars. And think about it if they give you your skyline back which is a great idea you could just start parting it out and make some cash or when u buy another 1 you can just add on the items to the new 1. My point of view just take the offer i know u like the skyline that u have and u don't want to get rid of it but in the future u will notice the car has been in an accident as it gets older and the price value will go down if u ever sell it thats my help for now.

yeah o know what u mean bout noticing its been repaired it will never be the same...nrma keeps mucking me around and not giving a decsion on the fate of the car, but after speaking with my panel beater, a repair job ( though not ideal) might not be too bad, because he says the damage isnt too bad and more than half the repair bill is in parts.

i duno just have top take it as it comes i spose, coz even if nrma makes a decision on it i still have to wait for the other driver to pay their excess or NOTHING happens...bit of a broken system sometimes where someone who's not at fault still gets a shitty deal.... thanks for the reply mate

WALL O TEXT hahahaha

yeh man what can u do they get there way but u know whats so funny when i wanted to insure my skyline with nrma they would'nt do it cause it was a import i don't know how u got yours insured lol that seems weird

i wanted to insure my skyline with nrma they would'nt do it cause it was a import i don't know how u got yours insured lol that seems weird

im not insured with nrma, im with just car but the claim is going through the other drivers insurance... i tried insuring my skyline with nrma as well, they said they would do it, but for well over $4000

ye i have checked with almost every insurer out there. NRMA and Just car are the only people who will insure my 350gt skyline. NRMA was around 3.5k and just car is at 2k at the moment but the car is insured for 35k.

NAB does do one off insurance to good customers, they quoted 16k........

Id be interested to see what other companies insure imports besides Just Car.

Edited by jawrgy

yeah ive heard of insurance companies coming up with some crazy quotes for imports, sad fact of life unfortuntely...apparently oz delivered cars can be insured for alot cheaper, i think il be looking into that next time i buy a car.

new news today about my car, it is to be repaired. The panel beaters were told to review there quote and it came back a lot cheaper than expected...not sure if its a good thing coz there may be lots less damage than appeared to me, or maybe its a bad thing and they are planning on cutting some corners..i will be talking to my panel beater at length 2mrw to make sure i dont get completely :spank:

    • Ha, well, it's been.... a bit of a journey. Things have taken much longer than I'd hoped. I'll probably put up a thread at some stage. Hopefully soon. The car's not done any kms since my update in June though, put it that way.
    • Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
    • Those comp test results are not hideous. Whether they are accurate or not (ie, when that comp tester says 140 psi, is the real pressure120, 140 or 160?) is unknown to us. The state of the battery used to crank it over is unknown, etc etc. Many people around here would say that the absolute values and the spread are perfectly fine to just add boost and keep going. I personally would be happier with a narrower spread than that, but even the diff between 125 and 145 is not terrible. That one cylinder at 125 though, has probably copped some damage relative to the others. You should inspect the valves seeing as you've got it open. Do you know how to measure installed ring gaps? That, and an inspection of the rings themselves, is how you will determine whether they need to be replaced. If you're not good to do these things, take the block and the pistons and rings to a shop that is, and ask them for the go/no-go on them. Do the bores need a hone at all? If so, you might well be justified in getting some different pistons in order to get away from the ring supply problem. Whether you're happy to spend a lot more money right now, on more gear, rather than less money, but an amount that looks stupid given that you will only get a handful of rings in exchange for that money, is for you to decide.
    • also possibly backed up to my filler and shat down it! 🤣
    • Ok so i would love some advice here please, i purchased an R33 a few months back and its had a few mods done to the engine, its an RB25det running a Master ECU, 1200cc injectors, bigger turbo, oil cooler, oil filter relocation kit, Spool H-beam rods, acl/ross pistons. When i removed the motor from the vehicle (as its getting a respray) i thought i would compression test it and these are the following results. Cylinder 1-145psi, Cylinder 2-143psi, Cylinder 3-125psi, Cylinder 4-145psi, Cylinder 5-140psi, Cylinder 6-135psi this test was done with the motor on the ground and powering up the starter motor. I dropped the sump and found broken oil squirters on cylinder 3,5 and 6. I was told my rings are probably worn so i stripped the motor completely to get a new set of rings for it. The trouble is no one has these rings anywhere and they have to be custom made by Ross over in the states and will cost about $600+$200 delivery. My question is how can i tell if my rings are at fault and if they are still ok and is this price ok for a set of rings?
